Call the Midwife Holiday Special
Sunday, December 29, at 9pm on KQED 9.
This is the story of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s 501st attempt to save a stranded orphan otter. From her discovery as a newborn pup crying on the beach through her rehabilitation in secret roof tanks atop the aquarium, follow Otter 501 as she learns how to survive in the wild. Her story reveals a previously unseen world of otter behavior and also illuminates some of the most difficult ecological questions of our time: Do we have a responsibility to save species that hover on the edge? Are our actions the cause of the illnesses sweeping through the sea otter population? And since we can’t return the world to its pristine pre-human form, are preservation efforts like this doomed to fail? Wednesday, December 4, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife follows nurse Jenny Lee and the midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House convent as they provide the poorest women with the best possible care. In this year’s holiday special, Chummy, PC Noakes and baby Freddy are back in the East End. Sister Bernadette, known as Shelagh since leaving the convent, is preparing for her wedding to Dr. Turner, and Jenny is facing huge challenges personally and professionally. When an unexploded World War II bomb is found under a warehouse close to Nonnatus House, the nuns and dozens of local families become homeless.

KQED’s Eyes, Ears and Voice at the Capitol
Holiday book and movie reviews, a yearend theater roundup, recipes and more. It’s all part of KQED’s annual online holiday guide. Check back throughout the month for updates.
As KQED Public Radio’s Sacramento bureau chief, Scott Detrow covers state politics and policy and reports on a wide variety of governance issues. The awardwinning reporter came West last winter from Pennsylvania, where he’d covered politics and government at the state capital for NPR’s StateImpact project and at WITF and WHYY. He took a few minutes to talk to On Q about his job and adventures in his new home state.

What drew you to KQED? I’d always heard about KQED, not only as the most-listened-to NPR affiliate in the country, but also as one of the best public radio stations out there. When there was a chance to cover state government in the biggest state in the country for a station like KQED, it was a really exciting opportunity. What has surprised you about California and covering the capital? I was prepared for this being a bigger state — everything is bigger. But what’s surprised me is the pace at which things move in Sacramento. Nothing will happen for a couple of months and then suddenly they’ll vote on something like 500 bills in the
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? I just bought skis last week. I’m excited to have an entire winter of skiing here. Also, this year I managed to get to every California Major League baseball stadium except for San Diego. But I’d seen a game there before, so now I’ve collected them all. Listen for Scott on The California Report weekday mornings at 8:50 and Friday afternoons at 4:30 on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM.
Priced Out: The Bay Area’s High Cost of Living KQED’s new series Priced Out brings the Bay Area housing crisis into focus. We’ll take you into changing neighborhoods and cities to see who is getting evicted and why, as well as to explore possible solutions.

course of one day. That’s taken awhile to get my head around. It’s also been a surprise to see just how interested the rest of the country is in what happens here. There have been several times this year where a bill passed or a new policy was announced, and suddenly it was news all over the country — not just here in California. I obviously knew California was an influential state before I got here, but it’s been interesting to see just how much of the daily news that happens in Sacramento has broader implications and interest.

An evaluation of the high school program in San Jose’s PLUS Academies revealed that the average GPA of participating students increased from 2.35 to 2.75, with 86 percent of students answering positively when asked if they could rise to the challenge when presented with rigorous new assignments. “Now that we’re ten years into Roadtrip Nation, we’re definitely in a reflective place,” says co-founder Mike Marriner. “It’s hard to believe we’ve been on this journey for so long, and yet it feels like we’ve only just begun. Especially with our expansion into education and having mobilized more than 100,000 students to build their own roadtrips over the past three years, we feel like the potential to launch a truly national movement that empowers people to define their own roads in life is within our reach.”

After 36 years broadcasting from Washington, DC, this fall All Things Considered on the weekend began a new chapter at NPR West (in Culver City, CA). With new host Arun Rath and a new theme (arranged by NPR Music’s Robin Hilton), the show now offers a distinctly West Coast perspective on issues facing the nation. Rath has had a distinguished career in public media as reporter, producer and editor. He returns to NPR — where he got his start 18 years ago as an intern at Talk of the Nation — following posts as senior reporter for the PBS series Frontline and The World on WGBH Boston.
