KQED was a bold idea — dubbed “the orginial Bay Area media startup” by the San Francisco Foundation. And as we look ahead toward another innovative six decades, one thing is certain. KQED is committed to serving the changing needs of the Bay Area. A growing, diverse, engaged audience is our central focus, and drives everything we do. You can count on KQED to continue be a public media organization that’s distinctive, relevant and essential to your daily life — your indispensable source for the highest-quality and most-trusted content.
A History of Innovation That Continues Today When KQED went on the air in 1954, it was one of a handful of stations in a new field referred to as the “educational TV movement.” Conceived initially as a teaching tool, the station quickly broadened its scope to include entertainment and public affairs programming. The young station made a name for itself by airing the famous 1958 Teller-Pauling debate on nuclear fallout as well as controversial inquiries into homosexuality, racial prejudice and communism.

KQED originated the idea of selling memberships, staging an annual auction and developing other fundraising methods that became widespread throughout the public television system. During the 1968 San Francisco newspaper strike, KQED founded Newspaper of the Air, public television’s first daily news program.
KQED made history again in April 2011, rolling out an alternative to the classic pledge drive. The Pledge-Free Stream was the first time any public radio station offered members the option of listening on their computers or smartphones without pledge-break interruptions.
KQED Public Radio became the first station — commercial or noncommercial — to try an all-news format on FM. On August 12, 1987, the station changed format from a classical music station that also aired Morning Edition and All Things Considered to an all news and information station.
In December 2012, KQED entered into a innovative partnership with the Knight Foundation to create Matter Ventures, a startup accelerator and early-stage venture capital fund that supports and invests in media entrepreneurs working to create a more informed, connected and empowered society.

American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered premieres Sunday, December 7, at 9pm on KQED 9.
Bing Crosby won the 1944 Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Going My Way, received the recording industry’s first Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1962, and was honored with a Peabody Award for his contributions to the television industry in 1970. But he might have been most proud to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, an honor he received posthumously in 1978.
His version of “White Christmas” remains the bestselling recording of all time, with The Guinness Book of World Records reporting sales of more than 50 million singles worldwide.
KQED.org
Bing Crosby is the most-recorded performer in history, including more than 2,000 commercial recordings and approximately 4,000 radio programs in addition to an extensive list of film and television appearances.
Bing Crosby (May 3, 1903–October 14, 1977) was, without doubt, the most popular and influential multimedia star of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, through radio, film, television and records, he reigned supreme. The new documentary Bing Crosby Rediscovered explores the life and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a man far more complex than his public persona. Crosby’s estate granted American Masters unprecedented access to the entertainer’s personal and professional archives, including never-before-seen home movies, Dictabelt recordings, photos and more. Narrated by Stanley Tucci, the film features new interviews with all surviving members of Crosby’s immediate family — wife Kathryn, daughter Mary, and sons Harry and Nathaniel. The film reveals Crosby’s struggles with his first wife, Dixie Lee, and their sons Gary, Dennis, Phillip and Lindsay. Mary addresses accusations of abuse first published in Gary’s 1983 memoir, which tarnished their father’s legacy. Gary speaks candidly about both his and his mother’s alcoholism as well as his difficulties with his father in a never-before-seen 1987 interview. Other new interviews include singers Tony Bennett and Michael Feinstein, record producer Ken Barnes, biographer Gary Giddins, and writers Buz Kohan and Larry Grossman, who both share the story behind Crosby’s 1977 Christmas special duet with David Bowie.

KQED’s newest e-book series, Clue into Climate, explores climate change through a blend of high-quality media, interactive graphics and real-world examples. Primarily developed for middle and high school students — but also relevant for lifelong learners — the four-volume series looks at the causes of climate change, its impacts on freshwater and ecosystems, and strategies for curbing it and adjusting to change. Each book in the series features a career spotlight video, highlighting various careers within the field of climate change. Also included are opportunities for students across the country to engage in discussion, and create and share their own media projects on climate change-related topics. Together with the companion volumes and an accompanying iTunes U course, these resources offer rich learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. KQED’s e-books are available for download through the iBooks Store on your iPad and on Macs running OS X Mavericks or later.
Describe a typical workday. I get here at 5am and prep for the first newscast at 6:04. I do eight newscasts a day, between 6:04 and 10:04am. Then I hand off to Stephanie Martin Taylor, our midday anchor. Sometimes I help getting the news of the day covered. I’ll jump in if an extra set of hands is needed. Every day is a little different. I guess you could say that my day is consistently inconsistent. What do you like about your job? The people. They are bright and easy to work with. And we laugh every single day.

What new projects are on the horizon? We just had a brainstorming meeting about how to cover the changing face of this, for lack of a better term, boomtown. It’s one of those stories we can’t really ignore. But we don’t want to just present a string of stories that never link together. We want to be more authoritative than that.
On a ligher note, any guilty pleasures? I’m in San Francisco; there are only pleasures, no guilt! Honestly, there are so many people here from far-flung parts of the world and with such vastly different experiences. There’s room for all different interests and hobbies and obsessions. For a journalist, it makes it easy to cover a lot of topics; you just need to find people who are passionate about one thing or another. If you approach them honestly, they’ll talk to you honestly.
KQED’s food blog, Bay Area Bites is preparing a host of new, mouthwatering recipes to inspire you as you plan for the December holidays. After the holiday rush has ended, check back with BAB for special event menus in the new year, including for Valentine’s Day, Easter, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Challenges? Being as ambitious as we want to be given our resources. It’s a good challenge to have, though. Some news organizations are treading water or waiting for the next round of layoffs. Some are pitted in competition with each other for crumbs, for one-hundredth of a ratings point.
We’re also working on new podcasting projects as well as expanding our core coverage with more reporters and producers and editors. We’re on the cusp of leaping in to a lot of new projects. For that reason, it’s good when people are in touch with us. Telling us what we should and shouldn’t cover. If you want to be heard, now is the time. If you’re someone we can talk to for a specific story or with a certain expertise or life experience, we want to hear from you. We are very serious about growing the way we cover the Bay Area. You don’t have to know somebody who knows somebody; we really are listening. We look at our social media presence very assiduously. If you Tweet us, or post to our Facebook pages or post something on Instagram and tag KQED, we pay attention.

Join Superheroes host and narrator Liev Schreiber to explore the dawn of the comic book genre and trace the evolution of the characters and their ongoing cultural impact worldwide. The series charts the progression from the first comic books born during the Great Depression to the television debut of Superman in the 1950s, to the emergence of superheroes who reflect changing social mores in the 1960s and 1970s, to today’s insatiable enthusiasm for superheroes. Airs Tuesday, December 23, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
