KQED Perks The new Legion of Honor exhibition Pierre Bonnard: Painting Arcadia celebrates Bonnard as one of the defining figures of modernism in the transitional period between impressionism and abstraction. The Black Panthers:
A new revolutionary culture was emerging, and it sought to drastically transform the system. The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would, for a short time, put itself at the vanguard of that change. Directed, produced and written by Stanley Nelson,The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its role in the cultural and political awakening of black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and who left it.

The Cute and the Deadly New videos journey to the edge of our visible world. Baby turtles, ladybugs and scorpions, oh my! New episodes of Deep Look, KQED’s award-winning YouTube science series, has both cute and deadly covered. First up is Deep Look’s episode about baby turtles. You may not know that turtles grow up without parents. This might sound lonely, but for threatened baby turtles raised in a zoo, it’s an advantage. Find out what happens when these ridiculously cute baby turtles get ready to leave their nursery in search of a little wilderness to call home. Next, love is in the air! Each year, ladybugs from the Bay Area fly in by the thousands to winter in our nearby mountain parks, where hibernation takes them underground. Before they depart in spring, these ladybugs take care of some unfinished business, like mating. Uncover just how these beetles home in on the same exact gathering spots every year. On the lethal front, travel to the desert where a highly venomous scorpion and a ferocious predatory mouse are locked in an evolutionary battle of chemical warfare. Plus, discover a deadly mushroom that is spreading in California. Deep Look’s three-minute videos are produced in ultra-high definition by KQED and presented by PBS Digital Studios’ YouTube network. Subscribe to Deep Look’s YouTube channel and see the unseen in new episodes released every two weeks.

A Ballerina’s Tale Film explores the triumphant rise of ballet dancer Misty Copeland. Few dancers make it to the highest levels of classical ballet. Of that already small number only a fraction of them are black women. Misty Copeland has pulled herself up the ladder at American Ballet Theater, from the studio company to the corps de ballet to soloist to the company’s first African American female principal dancer. A Ballerina’s Tale, airing Monday, February 8, at 10pm on KQED 9, is an intimate look at this artist during a crucial period of her life. In 2013, after more than a decade at American Ballet Theatre, Copeland was offered the lead role in Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird, to be performed at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, a major coup for a soloist. The night of her performance, she danced beautifully. But at the celebration afterward, she revealed she had been performing in great pain. Later, Misty found out that she had six fractures in her left shin. Without corrective surgery, the shin might one day break. Many doubted she would dance again.

News
A study published in 2010 in the journal Psychological Science found that people who spend more of their day having deep discussions and less time engaging in small talk seem to be happier. So, does talking about the stories heard on Morning Edition and All Things Considered make KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM listeners happier? We wanted to find out. Next month we’re launching an awareness campaign for KQED News called Start the Conversation, which asks Bay Area citizens to engage in conversations that matter — on KQED.org and social media as well as via print and outdoor ads. Acclaimed street photographer Travis Jensen (pictured below) has been asked to capture images of diverse people from around the Bay Area talking about some of their favorite stories from KQED News. “What we loved about Jensen’s work,” said KQED Creative Director Zaldy Serrano, “is that his images tell a story in a very personal way, with a lot of integrity. It evokes vibe the I get listening to stories on the radio.” Watch video outtakes on our website of Jensen shooting for the Start the Conversation campaign.
Nothing says “I love you” like making someone a special dessert from scratch. Cookies are always appreciated, but if you’d like to up your game a bit, you can’t miss with cookies plus ice cream! Heart-Shaped Chocolate Cookie Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwiches from Bay Area Bites are sure to bring back childhood memories, or at least make you feel like a kid again. And if strawberry is not your thing, by all means use whichever ice cream you adore! Vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, peanut brittle, salted caramel. The world is your ice cream sandwich. Salted Pistachio, Candied Orange and Dark Chocolate Bark is an equally good way to someone’s heart. Dark chocolate gilded with bits of candied orange, tangy orange peel and salty-sweet pistachios, it is both gorgeously colorful and irresistibly delicious. You probably won’t be able to stop eating it. (But you really should, at some point.) Find these recipes (with helpful step-by-step photos) plus a lot more Valentine’s Day ideas on KQED’s food blog, Bay Area Bites. Search under the Holidays and Traditions tab at the top of the page.

KQED Member Sweepstakes 2016 Enter to win $20,000 in cash or the vacation of a lifetime!
KQED’s online video series Art School recently set out on a mission to find out how artists develop their signature, distinctive styles. Recognizing that students and lifelong learners need concrete examples of how a unique artistic style is developed, Art School asked prolific Bay Area artists to tackle the compelling question “What’s your style?” Four artists distilled their style down to a mash-up of two main inspirational elements, which ranged from examples from historical artists like Francisco Goya to materials like buckets of house paint. Each artist
ended the interview with a call to action for students and any creatively curious person to take on challenges that will help budding artists define their own approach to art making. Meet fairy-tale shantytown sculptor Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor, punk rock quilter Ben Venom, thrifty expressionist painter Chad Hasegawa and folksy wordplay artist Evah Fan (pictured). After being inspired by the videos, show us your own personal style by sharing photos of your artwork on Twitter and tag @KQEDArtSchool. kqed.org/artschool

Moose populations across many parts of North America are in steep decline, and scientists believe one of the reasons is that fewer moose calves are surviving their first year. A stunningly intimate Nature documentary, filmed over 13 months in the spectacular wilds of Jasper National Park, goes deep inside the world of moose to experience a mother’s love and a calf’s first year of life. The award-winning documentary The Human Face of Big Data illustrates both the promise and the peril of the growing big data revolution. The film captures how big data pervades every aspect of our existence today in ways we never thought of, creating a sea change that many experts believe will have an impact on our lives a thousand times greater than the impact of the Internet.

Ride of a Lifetime Winter of 1968 is one I’ll never forget. A foot of fresh powdery snow had fallen overnight. School was cancelled. And I clamored to grab my wooden sled and head out. But just as I sat down at the top of our hill and grabbed the rope ready to push off, I heard my mother’s voice, “What are you waiting for? Let’s go!” In the blink of an eye, she jumped on the back of the sled, hugged me tight around the waist and pushed off as hard as she could. Boy, did we sail! We were both half terrified and giggling hysterically when the bumps sent us a tad bit airborne. I was truly surprised that we made it to the bottom of the hill in one piece. That was how Mom lived—carefree and spontaneous. Now in her 80s, I noticed over the holidays that severe arthritis has stolen more of her strength and balance. She’s not stable walking and I’m really worried about her living by herself and taking a fall. No challenge is harder than facing the changes in an aging parent. Roles begin to reverse as family members struggle to take care of an elderly loved one’s daily needs. If living alone has become too difficult and isolating, consider Áegis Living, a trusted and honored senior care provider. Come in for a tour and lunch in our vibrant, warm and comfortable home where dedicated staff help each resident seize the day and enjoy life more fully in assisted living. Don’t hesitate, call a residence nearest you for an appointment or more information!
