Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise on American Masters airs Tuesday, February 21, at 8pm on KQED 9.
KQED Arts has created a website featuring stories about Dr. Angelou’s history in the Bay Area, including her time at Washington High School in San Francisco and her experience being the first African American woman to drive a street trolley, as well as personal essays from Bay Area artists, community leaders and youth about the impact of Dr. Angelou’s wisdom, poetry and storytelling. The site will also feature ten archival episodes of Blacks, Blues, Black! a television series made by Dr. Angelou for KQED in 1968 that examines the influence of African American culture on modern American society.

Distinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928– May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. The first feature documentary about her life, Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, premieres on KQED 9 during Black History Month. The film traces Dr. Angelou’s incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life through never-before-seen footage, rare archival photographs and videos, and her own words. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South and her early

Storytelling is central to KQED’s mission. And in an era of innovation and dynamic change, we’re constantly looking for new ways to deliver those stories to our audience. Enter Q’ed Up, a weekly podcast that will explore the heart of the Bay Area and beyond. The first feature, coming Wednesday, February 8, is the ten-part series “American Suburb.” Although there’s no shortage of attention paid to the myriad ways gentrification is altering big cities, there’s very little reporting about the communities where many of the newly displaced end up — our suburbs. “American Suburb” reveals the flipside of gentrification by sharing the personal stories of residents — new and old — that make up one quintessential 4
Bay Area suburb: Antioch. KQED reporters Devin Katayama and Sandhya Dirks take listeners into the ordinary spaces of suburban life and find extraordinary stories about race, poverty and the desire to belong. Following “American Suburb,” Q’ed Up will tell the story of what happened to a paroled convicted murderer who could have been released far sooner had he admitted guilt. And the third story will take us into the lives of college students who find themselves homeless while attending some of the most well-regarded schools in the country. Subscribe to Q’ed Up on iTunes, Google Play, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts. Or visit us at kqed.org/qedup.

The robotic look-alikes — including a spy hippo, spy orangutan, spy meerkat, spy cobra and spy sloth — infiltrate the natural world to film surprising behavior, such as a spy baby crocodile getting a ride inside the mouth of a real crocodile as she gathers her babies up for safety. Spy in the Wild, a Nature Miniseries airs Wednesdays, February 1 through March 1, at 8pm on KQED 9.
Spy in the Wild Statistics The series was shot in 31 locations in 21 countries and took three years to film — nearly 800 filming days. There are 36 main species of animals featured, but more than 50 species make an appearance throughout the series. For every hour-long program,1,250 hours of video were actually shot. More than 20 scientists and wildlife experts were consulted or involved in the production.

In the most innovative series Nature has ever presented, the five-part Spy in the Wild uses more than 30 animatronic “spycams” disguised as animals to secretly record behavior in the wild. These spy cameras reveal animals as having emotions and behavior similar to humans — specifically, a capacity to love, grieve, deceive, cooperate and invent.

KQED Member Sweepstakes 2017 Enter to win $20,000 in cash or a spectacular vacation.
National Project Encourages Youth Civic Participation In the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election, more than 12,000 young people from 47 states made their voices heard through Letters to the Next President 2.0 (L2NP 2.0) — a project hosted by KQED and the National Writing Project. L2NP 2.0 asked students to speak out on the issue that mattered most to them. Issues included immigration reform, gun control, abortion, police violence, education costs and the environment. In addition to letters, students used video, audio, infographics, image collages and even songs to express their views. L2NP 2.0 was highlighted as a top election resource for teachers in The New York Times, and students’ multimedia
6
letters were shared weekly on KQED Public Radio’s The California Report up through the inauguration in January. All of the letters will be shared with the new president and his administration during his first 100 days in office. Teachers have access to the project’s online archive, and they’re using the letters, videos and so on in their classrooms as models to help improve student writing and research skills. And KQED and other L2NP 2.0 partners are putting together additional ways for teachers to use the archive. The online letter archive is open for viewing — check out the treasure trove of youth voices! letters2president.org

Oklahoma City: American Experience airs Tuesday, February 7, at 9pm on KQED 9.
On Q February 2017
A new American Experience film follows the rise of the extremist militia movement, from Ruby Ridge to Waco, that led to the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in American history — the 1995 bombing by Timothy McVeigh that killed 168 people in Oklahoma City.
13
After a 12-year prison sentence for armed robbery, Jimmy Rose (Emmy winner Ray Winstone) returns home to mixed emotions from his family. His daughter and grandson welcome him with open arms, but his wife (Amanda Redman, New Tricks) and son (Tom Cullen, Downton Abbey) are cold and indifferent, having learned to live life without him. The Trials of Jimmy Rose airs Friday, February 10 beginning at 7pm on KQED Plus.

In Jane Austen’s gentle parody of gothic fiction, Felicity Jones plays romance addict Catherine Morland. At a medieval country house that fuels her lurid fantasies, she forms a friendship with Henry Tilney (J J Field), but their budding romance is mysteriously cut short. Northanger Abbey airs Tuesday, February 14, at 7pm on KQED Plus, and Saturday, February 25, at 9:30pm on KQED 9.
