KQED’s Rightnowish Is Now a Podcast
Every Friday, Pendarvis — Pen, for short — takes us around his home turf in conversation with writers and musicians, skateboarders and historians, basketball players and rollerskaters, and entrepreneurs and educators, among others. We’ll stop by galleries painted on the sides of liquor stores in West Oakland. We’ll dance in warehouses in the Bayview, make smoothies with kids in South Berkeley and listen to classical music in a 1984 Cutlass Supreme in Richmond. “Artists are on the frontlines of history. Rightnowish is all about highlighting the now, taking a look at the past and being informed about what's coming next,” says Pen. At its core, Rightnowish is for people who are experiencing monumental change in their cities and towns because of gentrification, displacement, and changing demographics. So, who is Pen anyway? Pen’s a teacher and journalist who has been covering arts and culture in Oakland for 15 years. He’s been bringing his gift for storytelling to the forefront with projects such as OG Told Me, a coming-of-age memoir; TDK: The Dream Kontinues, a documentary film about the graffiti scene in Oakland; and his weekly column on KQED where he offers a singular perspective on how local communities respond to change with resilience.
People are looking for solutions and Rightnowish reminds us that communities can heal and survive through storytelling, shared histories and the simple act of saying hello to your neighbors. Rightnowish is produced by Ashleyanne Krigbaum and edited by Jessica Placzek. You can hear it on KQED FM 88.5 at 7:34am and 9:34am on Sundays. Subscribe for free today at kqed.org/Rightnowish, NPR One, Apple podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Follow Pen @ogpenn:
DECEMBER 2019
What can you learn about the past, present and future of a place through art? Rightnowish aims to answer this question by talking with creators, artists and culture keepers in the Bay Area right now . . . ish. A radio show on KQED FM 88.5 every Sunday morning, Rightnowish is now a podcast, too.

Best of the Best from the Third Coast Competition
The Great Listen from StoryCorps
Airs Thursdays, December 5 and December 12, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM
Airs Thursday, December 19, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM
Every year, the Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition chooses the most meticulously crafted and boundarypushing audio stories from hundreds of entries. We bring the competition to you in this two-part special, featuring the winning stories and behindthe-scenes interviews with the producers. Selections include a Latino USA producer’s emotional return to El Salvador to apply for a new visa after his Temporary Protected Status is revoked, with no guarantee he can return to the U.S., his home for more than 20 years; a queer perspective on shapeshifting; and a phone conversation that illustrates the power of communication and understanding despite language barriers. Tune in for these beautiful and powerful stories that exemplify the infinite possibilities of audio storytelling.
We’ve all been there — maybe at a family dinner, or over coffee with a friend or maybe even with your cashier at the grocery store: Suddenly, we hear a story about someone’s life we would have never expected. Can you imagine what we’d find out if we only asked? StoryCorps set out to answer that question with an app that guides users through the interview process and archives conversations directly to the Library of Congress, encouraging people to transform the world through meaningful conversation. This special from NPR and StoryCorps brings you poignant stories from the vast archive of user-created StoryCorps interviews, and gives you tips on how you can document your own conversations and preserve them for generations to come.

“The Fight for a True Democracy”

DECEMBER PICKS
Aretha Franklin Remembered (My Music) Premieres During Pledge: Sunday, December 1, at 7:30pm on KQED 9 Back in the day, I was famous for my “Mostly Motown” dance parties. Aretha Franklin’s songs always topped my playlist. Her soulful, powerful singing worked like a magnet, pulling people joyfully onto the dance floor. Aretha got the party started — and still does, more than a year after her death — even if the party is simply dancing in your living room or quietly soaking in a beautiful ballad.

Love Story Airs Saturday, December 21, at 10:10pm on KQED 9 Love means never having to say you’re sorry — at least in this film from 1970, which the American Film Institute calls one of the most romantic (and highest-grossing) films of all time. It stars Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neal as the young lovers.
Harry Potter: A History of Magic
Tuesday, December 10, at 8pm on KQED 9 To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book, the British Library is hosting an exhibition of the reallife magical history behind JK Rowling’s beloved classics. Take a tour of this exhibit guided by Rowling, who will examine the most interesting items on display.
Escape to the Chateau
Thursday, December 26, at 9pm on KQED Plus Catch the series 5 premiere of this show about a couple, their move to a chateau and its renovation and restoration. In this first episode, Dick and Angel expand the chateau project by setting up a luxury campsite on the property.

This new show offers plenty of chances to dance or hear her powerhouse voice as the Queen of Soul takes center stage in Aretha Franklin Remembered (My Music), premiering on December 1 at 7:30pm during pledge. Many performances have never been seen before in the United States and include: “Respect,” “Oh Happy Day,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” “I’ve Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” and “I Say a Little Prayer.” The show also offers up heartfelt rembrances from her friends and colleagues, who included some pretty interesting people: Smokey Robinson, Clive Davis, Mary Wilson and others.—Ellyn Hament

The holiday season is all about celebrating what you’ve got and the family and friends around us (or so multiple Lifetime movies and Love Actually have told us), but it can also be stressful. Raise your hand if you’re with us on this one. When you’re hosting, it can be hard to narrow down what to cook for everyone. When it comes to gift giving, who really needs another pair of fun socks? And what about when you’re reuniting with outspoken family members whose views are different from yours? That’s why we’re curating a small series of emails covering holiday prep; gift-giving; self-care and, most important, food, so you can make the best of the holiday season! To sign up for the emails, go to kqed.org/bayareabites/sign-up. Then cue your favorite wintry jingle (we have a soft spot for Boyz II Men’s “Let It Snow”), sit back and get ready for the recommendations.
