Guinness World Records awarded Downton Abbey with the accolade of the “Highest critical review ratings for a TV show.” This means Downton Abbey is the most critically well-received television program in the world, snatching the title from Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, and Modern Family, which all shared the previous record in 2009. Downton Abbey was watched by 13 million viewers when it aired on Masterpiece on PBS in 2011. It averaged an impressive Metacritic score of 92 out of 100, compared with 86 out of 100 achieved by the three previous recordsetting shows.

Downton Abbey Is Back! If you’ve been suffering from Downton Abbey withdrawal, the wait is almost over. The wildly popular Masterpiece Classic miniseries (winner of multiple Emmys, including Best Miniseries) returns this month with new episodes.
Missed Season 1? Want to watch it one more time? We’re airing all the episodes back to back on Sunday, January 1, beginning at 3:30pm.

The second season of Downton Abbey resumes the story of aristocrats and servants at at an English country estate in the middle of World War I. The returning cast includes Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, and Siobhan Finneran, plus there’s a drawing room full of new actors, all portraying the loves, feuds, and sacrifices of a glittering culture thrown into crisis. The second season promises to be as satisfying as the first, with thwarted and rekindled romances, forgotten and fresh scandals, and enough new plot twists to weave a tapestry with Lord Grantham’s family crest. “Masterpiece viewers took Downton Abbey to heart, and they won’t be disappointed with season two,” says Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton. “The cast we love is back, and screenwriter Julian Fellowes is in top form. No one can equal him at breathing life into a world that vanished almost a century ago.” In August 2011, as filming of Downton Abbey’s second season was wrapping up, Dan Stevens, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery spent several days visiting the West Coast. During their whirlwind trip to San Francisco, they spoke with On Q’s editor about their experiences filming the series. Find out what they did to prepare for their roles, which is their favorite room in the Downton house, and which question they’re most tired of being asked. You’ve heard that an apple a day can keep the doctor away. But what if there aren’t enough apples to go around? What more can be done to make sure our communities are healthy? kqed.org/stateofhealth kqed.org/ourxperience
KQED is exploring questions surrounding public health in its new blog “State of Health.” Editor Lisa Aliferis writes about the health of communities and the policies that affect it, from what happens in the halls of the state legislature to what’s happening in your refrigerator. Lisa is also the editor of KQED’s community health blog, “ouRXperience,” featuring posts by Californians from around the state. A veteran health reporter, Lisa talked about the two projects and what they offer. Tell me a little bit about yourself and your background in health reporting. I’ve been reporting about health for 20 years. I started as a health producer at KPIX Channel 5, shortly before President Clinton launched his health-care reform initiative. As part of our coverage efforts, I traveled to Canada to report on their single payer system and produced a town hall meeting about health-care reform. After that, I was hooked. In addition to CBS5, I also worked in the health unit at Dateline NBC.
What was the most popular “Bay Area Bites” post in 2011?

What kind of information will readers find on “State of Health”? The blog focuses on public health and health policy in California. Too often, health news focuses on what individuals can do to improve their health while overlooking the wide discrepancies in people’s immediate communities. For example, most people have started to grasp the concept of a “food desert.” If the only food you can buy is at the corner liquor store, it’s going to be very hard for you to eat a healthy diet. How can public health efforts and policy start to turn the tide of the many health problems plaguing us today? “State of Health” will also closely follow health-care reform.
How does the launch of “State of Health” affect “ouRXperience,” KQED’s community health blog? In short, the two complement each other. The community bloggers at “ouRXperience” bring us stories from smaller communities across California. We’re grateful to these dedicated community leaders telling stories from their area so readers across California can have a richer sense of what’s happening in health statewide. How can people contribute to “ouRXperience”? We currently have community correspondents in eight places and are actively recruiting in several more, especially Richmond and Merced. Anyone interested in contributing to the blog should visit kqed.org/ourxperience.

Radio The radio keeps me company during meals and as I go about various household tasks; it’s a very personal relationship. I’ve washed many a dish listening to news of Latino communities on Latino USA or following fairly sophisticated, yet quite entertaining, lines of inquiry with To the Best of Our Knowledge. I also love Perspectives and StoryCorps. Both programs let me hear varying points of view from my “neighbors” of all ages,
backgrounds, and walks of life. All these programs really broaden my perspective. Podcasts I listen to lots of podcasts, especially This American Life, Forum, Fresh Air, and NPR’s Live Concerts and Tiny Desk Concerts. The concerts offer a treasure of contemporary popular music of nearly all genres, from Tom Waits to the Klezmatics, Doc Watson to Gogol Bordello, and Bettye LaVette to Neko Case. KQED.org I go to the KQED website for all kinds of things, but especially for breaking news. Most recently, I used “News Fix” as a resource to help prepare for the last local election.

This national initiative focuses primarily on high school students, but KQED is working to reach students sooner, focusing our efforts on Oakland kids and teachers in grades 7–9. Upcoming community outreach includes a March 2012 town hall for teachers and other education professionals at Oakland’s Laney Community College and an ongoing partnership between KQED and the Bay Area Video Coalition to provide interactive learning experiences and media production training for at-risk youth, focusing on peer-to-peer storytelling. In addition to producing several news pieces for The California Report and our “MindShift” blog, KQED also launched a Web page where these stories (and many more) are being archived. Ask high school students if they plan to graduate and the vast majority— 92 percent—say yes. But in cities across the United States, reality is very different. Oakland, for example, has the lowest graduation rate of the ten largest cities in California—only 30.4 percent. Students have the will to graduate, but don’t always have the support or resources. What can be done? KQED is one of 20 public media stations participating in a new Corporation for Public Broadcasting–funded initiative, American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, aimed at helping communities find solutions to the dropout crisis. The program builds on public media’s long-standing commitment to education by facilitating conversations and strengthening partnerships between public radio and television stations and local schools, businesses, and community organizations to help students stay on the path to a high school diploma.

Join KQED and community partners, including Africa Network and Black Alliance for Just Immigration, for a film screening and discussion of More Than Just a Month. The film’s 29-year-old director, Shukree Hassan Tilghman (pictured), is on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month. Documenting his tongue-in-cheek journey, More Than a Month investigates what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in a “postracial” America. Speakers at the event will include filmmaker Tilghman; Al Williams, president of the San Francisco African American Historical & Cultural Society; Thomas Simpson, artistic director of AfroSolo Theatre Company; and Gerald Lenoir, executive director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
