A Salute to the Barbary Coast
The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third season. The all-star cast, including Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, returns and welcomes guest star Academy Award winner Shirley MacLaine. Before we dive into the new season, let’s recap where things stand. The second season closed with the reluctant heir to Downton, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with the eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). Meanwhile, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay), has eloped to Ireland with the politically minded chauffeur, Branson (Allen Leech), and is expecting a child. Now that we’re all on the same page, here’s a tantalizing glimpse at what’s in store this season: Lovebird servants Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) face new ordeals in their star-crossed marriage. Downton’s impeccable butler, Carson (Jim Carter), breaks in a new footman, who happens to be the nephew of the scheming lady’s maid O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran). Following Matthew and Mary’s engagement, Robert sticks to his duty to maintain Downton more firmly than ever — even as other great houses are crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I. In this changing landscape nothing is assured, and it may be that even the war-weary Crawleys must fight a new battle to safeguard their beloved Downton.
“ We’re thrilled to tell our millions of Downton fans that they can look forward to a fourth season of their favorite show.” —Masterpi e c e ex ecu ti ve produ cer Rebecca Eaton

The characters above stairs at Downton Abbey often seem to get much of the attention — the women certainly get the better costumes. How about hearing from someone who spends most of her time below stairs? Actress Lesley Nicols (Mrs. Patmore) spent several months at the end of 2012 living in Los Angeles with her husband (and their two dogs). She spoke candidly to KQED about how she came to get the role of Downton’s bossy cook, how she prepared for the role, her (lack of) home cooking skills and about being recognized at Starbucks.

Crowding into a cramped East Bay motel room for months on end, tensions escalate. Larry’s drinking gets worse, and his fights with his “sons” and the law threaten to jeopardize the family and fray already shaky nerves. “Sons of a Gun” asks, “Should Larry be taking care of people? And really, who’s taking care of whom?”

How Do You Define Family? Though not related by blood, three schizophrenic men and their alcoholic caregiver have lived together as a family for 20 years. The new Truly CA documentary “Sons of a Gun” follows loving “dad,” eccentric pseudo-patriarch Larry, as he makes sure schizophrenic “sons” Lance, Craig and Ubaldo have three square meals a day and take their medications. Coming together with love and laughter, this unlikely band of outsiders has created a place where they belong. Until they get evicted.

TED Radio Hour TED: Africa: The Next Chapter (Program 10 of 10) Wednesday, January 23, 8pm There are many stereotypes about Africa. That it’s a place of conflict, disease, war and famine. Or that it’s a single place, rather than a continent of 54 distinct countries. We’ll engage with thinkers and doers who are constructing new realities for their respective countries and for the African continent as a whole. The Computer History Museum Presents An Evening with Elon Musk Thursday, January 24, 8pm Join a lively conversation with Elon Musk about what inspired his entrepreneurial journey from South Africa to Silicon Valley; the lessons he learned at PayPal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity; and how he manages to lead two ground-breaking companies simultaneously. Why does he believe that electric cars are a vital component in the move away from oil to a more sustainable energy economy? And what is behind his fascination with creating a multiplanetary future for mankind, including a self-sustaining base on Mars?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Massey Lectures Wednesday, January 16, 8pm It’s been more than 40 years since he was assassinated, but the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. still ring strong and his message still stirs. This program features King’s Massey lectures, which first aired in 1967 on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio program Ideas.
King’s Last March Saturday, January 19, 1pm Although it was one of the most challenging and controversial chapters of his career, the final year of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life has not been the focus of significant public attention. This dramatic and illuminating documentary uses a rich mix of archival tape, oral histories and contemporary interviews to paint a vivid picture of what may have been the most difficult year of King’s life.
Intelligence Squared U.S. Israel Can Live with a Nuclear Iran? Saturday, January 26, 1pm and Wednesday, January 30, 8pm Despite increased international pressure and economic sanctions, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran doubled its number of underground nuclear centrifuges over the summer of 2012, stopping just short of the capacity to produce nuclear fuel. Can Iran be trusted to act rationally, or is Israel correct in viewing it as an existential threat? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized President Barack Obama for his refusal to draw a “red line” that would trigger U.S. military action, hinting at the prospect of a pre-emptive Israeli strike. But what are the costs and benefits of military action? Is a nuclear Iran inevitable, and will it destabilize the region?

Climate One — From the Commonwealth Club Storms of My Grandchildren Thursday, January 3, 8pm In 1989, NASA climatologist Dr. Hansen was the first person to testify before Congress about global warming, and he currently is the world’s pre-eminent climate scientist. Superstorm Sandy is precisely the kind of catastrophe Dr. Hansen has been warning about for decades. His most recent book, Storms of My Grandchildren, has even more resonance in the wake of the Frankenstorm that struck the East Coast.
State of the Re:Union with Al Letson East Jackson, OH — As Black as We Wish to Be Thursday, January 17, 8pm In this episode, Al Letson and guest producer Lu Olkowski visit a tiny town in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio where for a century residents have shared the common bond of identifying as African American despite the fact that they look white. Racial lines have been blurred to invisibility, and people inside the same family can vehemently disagree about whether they are black or white. It can be tense and confusing. As a result, everyone’s choosing: Am I black? Am I mixed race? Or am I white? Adding to the confusion, there’s a movement afoot to recognize their Native American heritage.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Should End-of-Life Care Be Rationed? Wednesday, January 2, at 8pm and Saturday, January 5, at 1pm Just because we can extend life, should we? If health care is a scarce resource, limited by its availability and our ability to pay for it, should government step in to ration care? In other words, how much is an extra month of life worth?
