Hawking New film tells the story of the planet’s most famous living scientist.

Told in Stephen Hawking’s own words and with unique access to his home and public life, Hawking is a personal journey through the superstar scientist’s world. Join him at home, under the care of his nursing team; in Silicon Valley as he wows a packed theater audience and meets a team of technicians who hope to speed up his communication system; and as he throws a party for family and friends. Hawking also carefully recounts Hawking’s life journey, from boyhood under-achiever to Ph.D. genius, and from healthy cox on the Oxford rowing team to diagnosis of motor neuron disease, given just two years to live — yet surviving several close brushes with death. Hawking premieres Wednesday, January 29, at 10pm on KQED 9.

Go Back to School Experience the epic film about UC Berkeley.

— David Denby, The New Yorker

Independent Lens “At Berkeley” premieres Monday, January 13, at 10pm on KQED 9.

KQED Public Television

“ I can’t think of another film portait of higher education that matches this one for comprehensiveness, intellectual depth and hope.”

“I spent 12 weeks at Berkeley [in the fall 2010 semester] and shot 250 hours of material,” explains Wiseman. “No events are staged and there is no artificial lighting. The editing of the film took 14 months spread out over a two-and-a-half-year period . . . A public university is a complex organism made up of many parts — students, faculty, administrators, staff, police, alumni, politicians and the community in which it is located. In the editing I had to try and find a way to suggest these interrelationships and their complexity while simultaneously giving a sense of the entire institution.”

KQED Public Radio

The latest work of legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman, At Berkeley is a revealing four-hour film about the University of California at Berkeley. Eschewing narration and standard interviews, the doc takes viewers from faculty meetings to classrooms, from financial aid seminars to research laboratories to show the myriad aspects of university life.
