On Q January 2016
The final season opens in 1925, with a series of crises reflecting the momentous changes that are transforming society. Women’s rights have given Lady Mary and Lady Edith new positions of responsibility: Mary runs the estate, and Edith manages the magazine she inherited from Michael Gregson. Meanwhile, Tom Branson has left for Boston, and newlyweds Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge are trying their luck in Jazz Age New York. Anna Bates faces a murder charge, though many still suspect her husband. As for the rest of the servants, big doubts hang over their jobs. Will great houses and the fortunes that support them soon be gone?

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan, Inspector Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson also turn up at 221b Baker Street. The 90-minute Masterpiece special “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” premieres Friday, January 1, at 9pm on KQED Plus and simultaneously online at pbs.org/masterpiece. This is the first time that Sherlock has premiered in the United States and the United Kingdom on the same day. The program will have an encore broadcast Sunday, January 10, at 10pm on KQED 9.

California’s electorate drives national changes in governance, medical care, immigration, same-sex marriage and more. But most Californians aren’t voting. California ranks 41st in the nation in voter turnout. Whatever the reasons, many voters and candidates don’t feel that California counts. In an attempt to get the state’s voters more engaged, KQED and three other public media organizations across the state — Capital Public Radio in Sacramento, KPCC in Los Angeles and KPBS in San Diego — have come together in a groundbreaking collaboration to cover the 2016 elections in the nation’s most populous state. The partnership, named the California Counts Collaborative, will produce in-depth, unbiased, highly coordinated, multiplatform coverage and resources that voters can use to inform their decisions.
4
“With so many people checking out of the political process, we hope to find out what people really care about, what issues affect their lives and figure out how to infuse our political coverage with the real concerns of Californians,” says Holly Kernan, KQED’s executive editor for News. The California Counts Collaborative will deploy reporters throughout the state to engage and involve Californians in the election. In cities and rural areas, reporters will speak with people who represent California’s demographic diversity as well as its economic divide. Beginning in early February, lively broadcast and digital storytelling approaches, social media and in-person engagement will be used to connect with Californians who may be opting out of traditional politics and political coverage. kqed.org/elections

Bay Area Life KQED Partners with Detour to Create Three New Interactive Audio Tours As part of KQED’s continued pursuit of new ways to tell stories and involve audiences more deeply, we’ve partnered with Detour — a city guide app (for iPhone now; Android version expected in early 2016) that reimagines audio tours — to create location-based documentaries about three of San Francisco’s most iconic neighborhoods. “KQED has a long-standing reputation for documenting the Bay Area history — they’re the ideal partner for these stories,” says Andrew Mason, Detour founder and CEO. KQED’s first tour, available now and narrated by the inimitable Peter Coyote, takes you through the history of the Haight-Ashbury. In the pop culture version of the 1960s, the “summer of love” is all tie-dye, peace and free love. But in reality, things got dark. Very dark. On the Haight-Ashbury tour, Peter Coyote tells both sides of the story. Walks through the Mission and Chinatown are coming in early 2016.
“We look at Detour San Francisco as a documentary of the city,” says Mason. “It just so happens that each episode takes place in a different location. Our hope is that taking this collection of Detours gives people a perspective and connection to the city that even natives may not have.” He adds, “And it’s fun to do with other people. One of the key things we’ve built is a script sychronization so multiple phones can synch up and you can have the experience socially. It’s like watching a movie together. These are not typical walking tours that will make you feel like a tourist. It’s the most fun you can have in your own city! My biased opinion, of course.” Read an interview with Andrew Mason. kqed.org/interviews
A Special Gift for KQED Members As a thank you to our members, the Haight-Ashbury Detour is available for free through March 31, 2016. Take advantage of the offer. detour.com/kqed

In 2005, Stephen Dubner (pictured) and Steve Levitt co-authored Freakonomics, a book about cheating teachers, bizarre baby names and crack-selling mama’s boys. They figured it would sell about 80 copies. Instead, it has sold 5.5 million, in roughly 40 languages. Since then, the duo has published several more books, and there is now a Freakonomics blog, a podcast and an award-winning radio project. Each week on the radio show, hear surprising conversations that explore the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature — from cheating and crime to parenting and sports. Host Stephen Dubner talks with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, social scientists and entrepreneurs — and with his Freakonomics co-author Steve Levitt.

New episodes of Inspector George Gently begin airing Friday, January 8, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
On Q January 2016
Award-winning actor Martin Shaw is back as Commander George Gently — an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London’s Scotland Yard to England’s North Country in the mid-1960s. Gently’s reputation for honesty and relentlessness makes him almost as feared among his colleagues as he is among criminals. But he finds an odd ally in John Bacchus — played by Lee Ingleby — an overeager, opinionated young sergeant who plays fast and loose with police procedures.

Benedict Cumberbatch (pictured) and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London.

A new three-part Nature series reveals the modus operandi of some of nature’s greatest animal con artists as they outwit predators, line up their next meal and get the girl. Deep down its dark burrow, a miniature owl (pictured) will mimic an aggressive rattlesnake to deter would-be predators.

Based on true stories, Mercy Street goes beyond the battlefield and into the lives of a distinctive cast of characters — doctors, nurses, contraband laborers and Southern loyalists — as they deal with the chaotic world of Unionoccupied Alexandria, Virginia, and the Mansion House Hospital in the early years of the Civil War.
Mercy Street premieres Sunday, January 17, at 10pm on KQED 9.

In the fascinating six-part series Alexander’s Lost World, filmmaker David Adams follows the footsteps of the earliest Greek explorers to discover the incredible descendants and cities of Alexander the Great’s Eastern empire. His epic 1,500-mile journey takes him from Greece to war-torn Afghanistan and Central Asia, where he searches for Alexander’s fabled Central Asian capital, follows ancient trade routes, and explores the traces of an extraordinary world that today is almost entirely erased.
Alexander’s Lost World airs Sundays, January 24 and 31, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
