The live shows are sold out, but you can listen to Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! from San Francisco, Saturdays at 11am on July 10 and 26 and August 6, on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM.
On Q July 2014 KQED Public Radio
When he was told that tickets for this month’s three Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! shows at San Francisco’s Nourse Theater sold out in six hours, host Peter Sagal wasn’t particularly surprised. “As you can imagine, the Bay Area is a pretty good place for us. It’s fertile ground for public radio listeners.” He also noted that this is the first time that the show has done a residency in another city. “Usually the longest we spend in a city is two nights,” he said, adding, “I love San Francisco. It’s hard for me to think of a place I’d rather spend three weeks in the summer.”
How It Works: Host Peter Sagal leads panelists (including comedians, authors and journalists) and listeners through a series of games designed to quiz them on the week’s news and showcase their wits.
Read the full interview online and find out what might surprise you about seeing the show live. kqed.org/onq-exclusives
Location: The radio show is taped in front of a live studio audience at Chase Auditorium in Chicago, as well as other venues around the United States — like in San Francisco in July.
KQED.org
What It Is: The Peabody Award–winning, weekly hour-long news quiz offers a fastpaced, irreverent look at the week’s news. Its audience has grown steadily since its premiere in January 1998, with a weekly audience of 3.8 million listeners on more than 660 NPR stations nationwide.
When do you start working on a show? With very rare exceptions we tape on Thursdays for air on Saturdays. Monday mornings we’ll talk about the previous week’s show: what we did right, what went wrong, lessons learned. As the week goes on and the week’s news starts to take shape, everything sort of speeds up and gets more intense. We’re often writing the script up to the very moment we walk onstage.
Do you have a favorite segment on the show? I love the “Not My Job” interview, partly because it’s a chance for me to talk to someone I really admire or whose work I’m interested in, but also because, more often than not, the guests enjoy it too. They’re often people who do a lot of interviews, but rarely ones so goofy. I also love the top of the show, with “Who’s Bill This Time?” which used to be “Who’s Carl This Time?” It’s where we get a chance to take a whack at the big story of the week.
Get magazine online: kqed.org/OnQ
How involved are you with scriptwriting for the show? I am very involved with the writing. Thankfully, I don’t do it all, because I work with people who are much funnier than I am. By letting them contribute, I sound a lot funnier. One of the great glories and tragedies of my job is that we’ll spend all week on
a joke — writing and rewriting, arguing about which word is funnier. Then I’ll try it in front of the audience, and it’s immediately topped by something the panelists say off the top of their head. We can work on material all week, but if a panelist says something off the cuff that people go nuts over, our joke might not even air. But it’s a small price to pay to broadcast a radio show that’s actually funny.

Walk on the Wild Side Don’t miss two compelling new series from PBS.
Drought Watch KQED’s water coverage keeps flowing. My Wild Affair tells extraordinary stories of the bonds between humans and their animal companions, including Aisha, an orphaned baby elephant; Chantek, an orangutan raised as a human child; Rubert, a black rhinoceros raised in suburbia; and Andre, a harbor seal that entered the human world but remained wild at heart.
Sex in the Wild is presented by anatomist Joy Reidenberg (pictured) and veterinarian Mark Evans. The four-part program examines the reproductive behaviors and biology of four species — kangaroos, elephants, whales and orangutans — and takes an in-depth look at how these animals find and woo the opposite sex. It also explores how they mate, give birth and raise their young in extreme environments. My Wild Affair and Sex in the Wild begin airing Wednesday, July 16, on KQED 9, at 8pm and 10pm, respectively.

Historic. Unprecedented. Epic. These are some of the terms used to describe California’s drought — and we’re only in year three. 2013 is in the books as California’s driest calendar year on record, and there’s no telling when things will turn around. Consequently, KQED has ramped up its drought coverage, harnessing the full spectrum of radio, television and Web resources. In addition to daily developments as the story unfolds, you’re hearing regular, in-depth reporting on KQED’s weekly science feature (Monday mornings) and as part of The California Report. From Molly Samuel’s look at preparations for a brutal fire season, to Sasha Khokha’s profile of a struggling farm town, to Lauren Sommer’s attention-getting story on plans to make the California Aqueduct run backward, KQED’s coverage has been wide-ranging and groundbreaking. We’re also collaborating with public media partners around the state, such as Valley Public Radio in Fresno, KPCC (Los Angeles) and KPBS (San Diego), to bring a statewide perspective to our coverage. Frankly, it can be hard to keep up with it all. Fortunately, KQED’s Drought Watch brings our major coverage together in one place. You’re helping too. At KQED’s State of Drought Tumblr page, you can share your own observations, water-saving tips, photos — even drought-inspired poetry. When we asked for your drought haiku, you responded. Here’s a favorite of mine. No rain today still. Lovely day to walk the dog. I feel so guilty. — Craig Miller, KQED Science Editor kqed.org/droughtwatch stateofdrought.tumblr.com KQED’s coverage of climate change is funded in part by the The Follis Family Fund and the Mary Van Voorhees Fund.

Is there a recent story that was particularly memorable? Probably some of the most satisfying reporting I’ve done has been a series of reports about food. The idea is not just to revel in our local foodie culture, which is fabulous, but to use the segments to visit different ethnic communities. Living in California it’s easy to forget that we are
What’s one of your guilty pleasures? I definitely binge-watch a lot of television. House of Cards was fabulous. Also Orange Is the New Black. I’m on to The Good Wife now. I don’t subscribe to cable TV, so I often watch a lot of television 18 months behind everyone else. Sometimes I’ll be at home watching on my laptop, and I’ll look outside at the beautiful day and think, “What am I doing?” [laughs]

After seven years as a host and reporter for the weekday morning broadcast of The California Report on KQED Public Radio, a job for which she gets up 3:15am, Rachael Myrow is taking a new position this fall as reporter for KQED’s Silicon Valley News Desk in San Jose, covering a wide range of topics in the South Bay region, including government, the economy, diverse communities, technology and culture. Before Rachael leaves San Francisco, gleefully opts for a later bedtime and,
I assume the biggest challenge is getting up at 3:15am. What’s something that you really enjoy about your job? I love the audience. They are earnest and care about the direction of the state and their community, and they’re intelligent enough to follow along. They don’t need to be spoon-fed the basics.
surrounded by this amazing diversity, and we tend to visit these communities only through restaurants. But what if we had the opportunity to get a little closer and talk to people growing heirloom produce in their gardens, cooking feasts in their home kitchens or serving food in their churches and temples?

In East African nations, the Swahili word matatu refers to privately owned minibuses or easily accessible share taxis. Often decorated with popular icons and sounds, matatu offer not only a means of travel, but also access to another world. Cinema Club is impassioned by the belief that everyone has a spectacular story regardless of age, geographical bounds, sexual preference, race and socio-economic status. We invite you to come aboard the Matatu Film Festival, July 16–31 in Oakland, exploring some of the world’s most spectacular stories, along with craft cocktail and artisanal food pairings. Enjoy the ride.
