News

Discover something new this summer with the remarkable collection of short science videos from Deep Look, KQED’s YouTube series exploring big scientific mysteries by revealing the little marvels at the very edge of our visible world. Past videos have explored the pygmy seahorse’s amazing act of camouflage and the hummingbird’s slow-motion aerial acrobatics in a wind tunnel. The 20 videos in Deep Look’s new collection take us from the forest floor to the depths of the ocean. You’ll uncover the hidden realm of leafcutter ants, some of the world’s oldest farmers; discover “resurrection plants,” which spring back to life with the rain after laying dormant for decades without a drop of water; and see what scientists find when they put 500-year-old coral samples into a particle accelerator. To illuminate rarely seen wonders, all of Deep Look’s videos are shot in ultra-HD using macro cinematography and microscope video and include animations. Deep Look is produced by KQED’s award-winning science team and is presented in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios. “The videos can show things at a scale impossible to the naked eye, which provides an entirely new perspective on the world,” says PBS Digital Studios Director of Programming Matt Vree. “That unique perspective is what we think makes it so compelling.” kqed.org/deeplook Attend a special screening of Deep Look videos and meet its KQED producers at the Exploratorium’s Saturday Cinema: Science on Screen, Saturday, July 18, at 2pm. Funding for Deep Look is provided in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Deep Look is a project of KQED Science, which is supported by HopeLab; The David B. Gold Foundation; S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation; The Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation; The Vadasz Family Foundation; 4 Smart Family Foundation and the members of KQED.

Expanding East Bay News Coverage KQED News strives to cover the entire Bay Area, and its coverage of the East Bay has improved dramatically with the addition of two award-winning reporters, Devin Katayama and Sandhya Dirks, whose focus is on equity issues in Oakland. “Quality reporting of East Bay issues is lacking,” notes Devin, “and KQED has a great opportunity to tell the story of a changing region. My goal, in part, is not only to write stories that have an impact, but also to build a presence in Oakland that engages a wider audience with KQED. “By focusing on equity issues, we commit to reporting stories on people and places that are either underserved, underrepresented or given disproportionate attention, but are critically important to a neighborhood, city or region. “Since one of my interests is education, I’d like to connect the dots between investment in early childhood education and quality-of-life indicators later in life — where that’s happening and not happening in Oakland. Another important topic is displacement. As housing prices continue to rise and changing demographics are altering what the city looks like, who is moving where and why?” You can follow Devin and Sandhya’s work on KQED 88.5 FM and read their stories online. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. With summertime upon us, there’s no better time to discover a new favorite place to enjoy America’s favorite frozen treat. Bay Area Bites’ guide to ten favorite ice cream parlors in the South Bay features a wide range of establishments serving much more than plain old vanilla and chocolate. There’s a Palo Alto neighborhood shop that’s been making flavors like Salty Caramel, Caramel Praline and the Silicon Valley–inspired Computer Chip — chocolate ice cream with orange essence — for years. Not to be missed in San Jose, a karaoke ice cream truck serves popular flavors like the creamy, cinnamon-spiced Eastside Horchata and the sweet and nutty Macapuno. You’ll find the mouthwatering Guides page under Bay Area Bites’ Restaurants tab.

From themes of political suppression to mankind’s misuse of the land, a new Spark special from KQED highlights work that is both spellbinding and thought-provoking. Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei delves into themes of freedom of speech and imprisonment in a large-scale art installation on the notorious former prison island of Alcatraz. David Maisel’s stunning aerial photographs reveal landscapes irrevocably altered by mankind, from the eerie salt flats of Owens Lake to the open pit mines of the American West. The Market Street Prototyping Festival explores an innovative urban planning approach designed to bring new life and public art to a neglected urban corridor in San Francisco.

The Bomb airs Tuesday, July 28, at 8pm on KQED 9.

On Q July 2015

The Bomb tells a powerful story of the most destructive invention in human history, outlining how America developed the nuclear bomb, how it changed the world and how it continues to loom large in our lives. Through state-of-the-art transfer techniques that have turned recently declassified images into vivid, jaw-dropping footage, viewers witness the raw power and strangely compelling beauty of above-ground nuclear tests.
