KQED Perks KQED Member Days at the Asian Art Museum Free admission July 14 and 15 During the Summer of Love, flowers became a powerful symbol of peace — a concept plucked from Buddhist art. This summer, the Asian Art Museum’s Flower Power exhibition uncovers the hidden meanings of flowers in Asian art through gloriously gilded screens; striking sculptures; and contemporary installations that speak to present-day issues, from climate change to social activism.

Want to be part of history? On Saturday, July 15, join Lotus Live — part human be-in, part artwork, part celebration of Flower Power — and help earn a world title for the Largest Human Flower. Details are online. asianart.org

Meet Nature Cat at Children’s Fairyland Located in a 10-acre park on the shores of Oakland’s Lake Merritt, Children’s Fairyland features gentle rides, theater performances, farm animals and more than 40 storybook sets to inspire imagination. On Saturday, July 8, come meet Nature Cat, from the popular PBS KIDS series. Show your KQED MemberCard to receive $1 off admission. Don’t miss the Bay Area Children’s Theatre performance of The Rainbow Fish Musical at Children’s Fairyland in July. Tickets are available (at an additional cost) at bactheatre.org. fairyland.org

San Francisco Jewish Film Festival — Special Discount The 37th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (SFJFF), presented by the Jewish Film Institute, returns July 20 through August 6 at venues in San Francisco, the East Bay, Palo Alto and San Rafael. SFJFF celebrates excellence in Jewish and independent cinema with three weeks of groundbreaking films, memorable guests and exciting special events. KQED members can use the code KQED37 — through July 20 — to receive a 15 percent discount on tickets to any regularly priced screening. sfjff.org

moose, whales and eagles – gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast, an event never before captured live on television. What happens in the Alaskan wilderness in late July affects animals’ survival and well-being for the remainder of the year. With some of largest areas of wilderness left on Earth, Alaska is the best place in the world to see the huge animals and top predators in all their glory. The three-night live presentation also explores the challenges of preserving America’s last frontier and the relationship between Alaska’s First

Peoples and the animals among whom they co-exist. Hosted by brothers Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt — zoologists, adventurers and Emmy Award–winning TV hosts — Wild Alaska Live visits several locations, including points near Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, where the team looks for black bears and bald eagles; the vast Kenai Fjords National Park, in search of orca and humpback whales; and the wilderness of Katami National Park, where brown bears and elusive wolves live and hunt.

Wild Alaska Live airs Sunday, July 23, Wednesday, July 26, and Sunday, July 30, at 5pm on KQED Plus and at 8pm on KQED 9.

Following the success of 2015’s Big Blue Live, which showcased Monterey Bay’s unique underwater community, PBS returns with a new live, naturalhistory adventure program, Wild Alaska Live. The three-part multiplatform production, created in partnership with BBC, airs July 23, 26 and 30 on KQED Plus and KQED 9. Wild Alaska Live turns the cameras on a must-see natural spectacle that plays out across the vast Alaskan wilderness. We see some of the world’s most remarkable animals – bears, wolves,

Creating Art With Courage, Creativity and Intention Each week, KQED Arts videos offer you a front row seat to Bay Area artists’ inspiring work. Get a behind-the-scenes look at their process, hear personal stories and get to know their communities. The ongoing series Art in the Age of Trump chronicles local artists’ response to our current political climate. Highlights include: Soltron: A New Musical Message of Resistance Soltron’s musical influences come from Cuba, Brazil and Central America, but San Francisco’s Mission district — the musicians’ home —informs their lyrics. Now, their message has gone global. Sudanese Singer Salma Al Aasal Sings Her Way Home Salma Al Aasal left Sudan in the 1990s, at a time when women who chose to sing could be publicly shamed, beaten, whipped or killed. Watch as she reveals her voice during a concert at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California in Oakland. Iranian-Born Composer Bridges Worlds in Extreme Times Iranian-born composer Sahba Aminikia brings together voices of Afghan students, the San Francisco Girls Chorus and Kronos Quartet to sing Persian lullabies. kqed.org/artsvideo

Summer Eats Grilling and BBQ, healthy salads, seasonal desserts When the weather turns warm, the sun is shining and the days get longer, it’s time to fire up the grill and invite friends and family over. From seasonal salads and vegetable sides to salmon, steak, burgers and chicken fajitas — as well as some yummy fresh fruit desserts — the editors and cooks of Bay Area Bites present some all-time favorites recipes, plus fun new additions that they think you’ll love as much as they do. kqed.org/bayareabites

The SF Homeless Project, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 80 media organizations from the Bay Area and beyond, has wrapped up its first year of coordinated coverage exploring the causes and effects of soaring housing prices and the increasing numbers of people living in cars and on the streets. Over the past year, KQED has told stories of homeless students who are forgoing rent payments in order to pay tuition; suburban and rural communities

that are grappling with how to respond to a surge in homeless populations; and how the closing of local institutions for the mentally ill has contributed to the growing crisis; as well as many other stories. For the project’s first anniversary, KQED and the San Francisco Chronicle, along with dozens of other regional media outlets, joined forces for another wave of coverage. During the week of June 28, KQED devoted several segments of Forum to exploring the

regional differences of homelessness in the Bay Area; KQED News reporters visited a number of makeshift, but surprisingly technologically innovative river encampments throughout the state; Above the Noise devoted an episode to the growing number of homeless high school students; and the KQED Arts team examined a vital culture of artmaking in local tent cities. KQED’s work, along with that of all other members of the SF Homeless Project, is being archived online. kqed.org/homeless sfhomelessproject.com

Learning

Valuing Youth Voices KQED’s first Youth Advisory Board inspires its members. Last fall, KQED Learning created its first-ever Youth Advisory Board (YAB), welcoming 13 diverse high school students from across the Bay Area to add their voices and opinions to KQED’s work. During their one-year term, YAB members gained valuable leadership and communication skills and experienced the media-making process from behind the scenes. They also built community with other Bay Area teens and helped KQED create more thoughtful programming for students and KQED’s audience as a whole.

YAB members were part of the story creation process and production of Above the Noise, KQED Learning’s new YouTube series for teens. They met with editors and producers of KQED Newsroom, Perspectives and Bay Curious and gave regular feedback to the Learning team on various classroom tools and products. Said YAB member Cooper V., “I gained knowledge of how KQED works, how media works, how my peers work and how I work.” The application process for the 2017–2018 Youth Advisory Board opens August 15. Applications will be available online on that date. kqed.org/learning/youth-advisory-board

Funding for KQED Learning is provided by the Koret Foundation, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Stuart Foundation, the Panta Rhea Foundation, the John and Gwen Smart Foundation and the members of KQED.

The 2017 KQED Sweepstakes is well underway. Have you received your entry? A wonderful array of prizes is available, including $20,000 in cash. You can’t win if you don’t return your sweepstakes entry.

MindShift is a podcast about the future of learning. Hosts Ki Sung and Katrina Schwartz (pictured), who also produce KQED’s popular MindShift blog, explore innovations in education that are shaping how kids learn. This summer, five new podcast episodes will be released featuring educators and students who are developing ways to improve learning for all. You’ll hear from Michael Godsey, a high school English teacher who started teaching with the Serial podcast and discovered how audio can help students become better at reading and writing.

Enter by July 26, 2017, for a chance to win our Early Bird Prize — seven nights in tropical Tahiti, where you’ll experience the warm Polynesian spirit in paradise. It’s our way of saying thanks for supporting KQED.

Former Stanford dean of freshmen Julie Lythcott-Haims shares her insights on the pitfalls of overparenting. And learn how Catlin Tucker piloted an interdisciplinary program at Windsor High School that upended how she teaches and grades. Look for MindShift wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit the MindShift website for episodes and supplemental blog posts. kqed.org/mindshift

The final sweepstakes deadline — August 31 — is just around the corner. Enter today! Visit kqed.org/sweepstakes to view this year’s prizes and complete rules. Donations are not necessary to enter or win. Void where prohibited. Restrictions may apply.

wanted to do what others have already done. “KQED offered me the chance to build the morning newscasts into a unique presence, and we did that. I consider broadcasting a creative profession, and 1A offers a blank canvas with plenty of colors to paint with. Plus, I get to be more of myself on the air than was appropriate to be as a newscaster. It feels good to create a personal connection with people who want help make sense of the world.”

“I believe that the world is watching to see how the U.S. handles this period of turmoil and uncertainty,” said Johnson. “Many Americans feel their biggest enemy isn’t the foreign adversaries around the world — it’s that person you disagree with or don’t understand or just flat-out hate because of the way they voted. Democracy depends on us being able to work through our difficulties and find solutions to the common problems we face. Public radio has helped lead those conversations for generations, and 1A advances that tradition in 2017.” Johnson is the first to admit that he enjoys building something new and has never

Hosted by former KQED newscaster Joshua Johnson and inspired by the First Amendment, 1A champions American’s right to speak freely, offering conversations framed in ways to make you think, share and engage. Topics that 1A has covered since its launch in January run the gamut. They include an hour with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg on coping with the death of her husband, an “Islam 101” for listeners to ask anything they want to know about being Muslim, a special on the Paris Agreement the day President Trump pulled the United States out of the climate accord — and everything in between.
