(clockwise, from top l.) Iguazu Falls; Copacabana Beach; Michael Palin with Dinho Ouro Preto, lead singer of Capital Inicial, in Brasília; three ladies in Bahian dresses, in Salvador.
Travel from the lost world of Amazonia to the buzzing metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, meeting the people and visiting the places that shape this South American nation. On the final leg of his journey (“The Deep South”), Palin starts in the picture-perfect town of Parati, where he meets with Prince João de Bragança, heir to the defunct throne of Brazil. In Embraer and Sao Paolo, Palin meets some of Brazil’s successful politicians, heads of business and TV soap stars, whose opinions on Brazil’s future vary widely. After experiencing the beauty and serenity of the vast wetlands of the Pantanal, Palin ends his journey at the magnificent Iguazu Falls, where he concludes that Brazil has much to offer the world as it takes its place as a potential new superpower.

Traveling southward to the upper reaches of the Xingu River, Palin is welcomed to the Wauja tribe, one of the most colorful of all the Brazilian indigenous peoples. In “The Road to Rio,” Palin visits the source of Brazil’s great mineral wealth — the state of Minas Gerais and its giant mines. Then he’s off to Rio de Janeiro, host of the next Olympics and World Cup. Rio has always been a party town, but it’s also blighted by drugs and gang violence. Palin learns how the authorities are hoping to bring the favelas back into the city.

Michael Palin’s Brazilian odyssey begins in the northeast, where modern Brazil was born. In the program’s first episode, “Out of Africa,” he starts in the city of Sao Luis before traveling down the coast to Recife and Salvador, dropping in on the vaqueros — the cowboys — who work on vast cattle ranches. In Salvador, he learns to drum with the famous Olodum School and has a lesson in cooking Bahian-style, before finding out what lies behind the beguiling moves of capoeira dancers. Next in “Into Amazonia,” Palin travels on several rivers through the very heart of Amazonia and meets the Yanomami tribe. He visits the

California Election Watch 2014 Expanded coverage from KQED
Meet Local Digital Innovators PBS LearningMedia rewards tech-savvy teachers.
This year marks the first time California voters will use the state’s top two primary election voting system to elect the governor and other statewide officials. The June primary will narrow the field in numerous contests and clarify issues heading into the contentious fall election season.
KQED Education is proud to announce that three of the 100 educators selected for the 2014 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators program are from the Bay Area. The national program rewards tech-savvy K–12 educators who are serving as leaders in education technology and incorporating digital media in their classrooms to promote student engagement and achievement. These innovators will receive yearlong hands-on and virtual professional development opportunities. Chris Chiang has been a teacher for 10 years and is currently a social studies teacher at the Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton. In 2006, Chris helped found a New York City school that was part of the Urban Assembly network. He was named Monta Vista High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2010. He also is a Google Certified Teacher and a Microsoft Innovative Educator and is trained in gifted education through the University of California at San Diego and project-based learning through High Tech High.
On Tuesday, June 3, tune in to KQED Public Radio starting at 8pm for hourly 5-minute election-night newscasts by Mina Kim. The following morning, Joshua Johnson anchors KQED News’ hourly election updates from 6 to 9am, while at 5:50, 6:50 and 8:50am, The California Report and host Rachael Myrow will report significant election wins and losses from around the state. Throughout the day, KQED News will provide hourly election returns on the radio and online. On Wednesday, June 4, Forum with Michael Krasny presents an hour (beginning at 9am) of discussion and analysis of major races, and at 4:30pm, Scott Shafer and The California Report wrap up the primaries with interviews, discussion and analysis. Primary election coverage concludes Friday evening, June 6, with Thuy Vu and KQED Newsroom on KQED 9. Amy Ridlehuber Kingsley has been teaching middle and high school French for 15 years and is currently a teacher at Hillvie Middle School in Menlo Park. Amy loves integrating technology into her classroom and enjoys leading professional development for other teachers. She spent 11 years as a department chair and takes great pleasure in working with other teachers to improve their teaching. Amy says the best part of her job is witnessing the “aha moments,” when language learning clicks and her students are able to communicate confidently in French. Kaki McLachlan is a teacher at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax. She teaches seventh grade life science and two elective technology classes — one on digital media, the other a quarter-long enrichment class for sixth-grade students focusing on basic computer applications and digital citizenship. Kaki thrives on getting students excited about learning. She believes the key to engaging students is to find ways to connect academic lessons to their passions outside the classroom. kqed.org/education Support for PBS LearningMedia is provided by the Mary Van Voorhees Fund.

Anthony Friedkin’s Gay Essay A visual chronology of historic change
KQED Public Television
One of the new short films featured at this year’s San Francisco Green Film Festival is the heartwarming tale “Sea Otters vs. Climate Change,” produced by KQED’s QUEST partner station KCTS 9 in Seattle. The film will be screening in a shorts program at 4pm on Sunday, June 1, at the Little Roxie Theater. When people talk about sea otters, the words “cute,” “cuddly” and “curious” often come to mind. But now you can add another descriptor to that list —

In 1969, the same year New York’s Stonewall riots lit the spark that touched off the gay liberation movement, a young California artist named Anthony Friedkin began making photographs of gay life in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In June, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Stonewall and the 44th anniversary of San Francisco Pride celebrations, the de Young museum is exhibiting Friedkin’s The Gay Essay — a series of more than 75 vintage prints taken from 1969 to 1973. KQED Arts will interview Friedkin about his long career and discuss the times and the movement his images so eloquently document. Look for the segment online and on air during the month of June.

climate-change fighters. Along the West Coast, these aquatic acrobats have become a surprising vanguard in the fight to strike at the root cause of climate change trends. Researchers are investigating the connections among hungry otters, spiky urchins and the ability of underwater kelp forests to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The film also illustrates how wildlife conservation can provide broad ecological benefits.

The six-part documentary Broadway: The American Musical chronicles the Broadway musical throughout the 20th century and explores the evolution of this uniquely American art form. The series draws on a wealth of archival news footage, lost and found television moments, original cast recordings, still photos, feature films, diaries, journals, intimate first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many of the principals involved in creating the American musical.
