Join us for a special screening of two stellar documentaries—Stonewall Uprising and Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria. Three years before Stonewall, transgenders and transvestites fought police harassment at Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Screaming Queens tells the little-known story of this first collective, violent resistance to the social oppression of queer people in this country.

In 1969, homosexual acts were illegal in every state except Illinois, and gays frequently found themselves being hauled off to jail, their names splashed in the next day’s newspaper. The vast majority of medical authorities at the time decreed homosexuality a mental disorder and often prescribed brutal treatments, including lobotomy. Even in Greenwich Village, where thousands of gay people moved to escape the constant oppression of their hometowns, patrons of gay bars were accustomed to frequent police harassment. But on June 28, 1969, the gay community experienced what one Village Voice reporter who was on the scene called its “Rosa Parks moment,” when the police raided the Mafia-run gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. For the first time ever, patrons refused to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a violent three-day uprising that launched the gay rights movement. Told by those who took part, from drag queens and street hustlers to police detectives, journalists, and a former mayor of New York, and featuring a rich trove of archival footage, Stonewall Uprising recalls the fervently hostile climate that gays were forced to live in, when public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals, respected news outlets reported on the “homosexual problem,” and police entrapment was rampant. Says a man who was part of that historic day, “It’s very American to say ‘this is not right.’ It’s very American to say, ‘you promised equality, you promised freedom.’ And, in a sense, the Stonewall riots said, ‘deliver on the promise.’ So, in every gay pride parade every year, Stonewall lives.”
Stonewall Uprising, from the PBS history series American Experience, airs Wednesday, June 8, at 10pm and Monday, June 13, at 8pm.

The Story They Never Knew What if your life-saving medicine contained HIV and hepatitis? And the drug manufacturers, the government, and your own doctors knew—but failed to warn you? Bad Blood: A Cautionary Tale returns to the beginning of the AIDS crisis, presenting the story no one knew. Through the eyes of survivors and family members, the film chronicles how
a “miracle” treatment for hemophilia became an agent of death for 10,000 Americans. Faced with evidence that pharmaceutical companies and government regulators knew the product was contaminated with deadly viruses from the 1960s through the early 1990s, they launched a powerful and inspiring fight to right the system that failed them and to make it safer for all.
The KQED national presentation Bad Blood premieres Saturday, June 25, at 6pm. 3

Community Film Screenings Join the discussion You are invited to join KQED, in partnership with the Native American AIDS Project, the San Francisco Native American Health Center, and ITVS for a screening and discussion of the film Two Spirits—an exploration both of the life and death of a boy who was also a girl and of the essentially spiritual nature of gender. Fred Martinez was nadleehi, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He became one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. “Making the film began when I sat with Fred’s mother at his grave and she poured out her heart to me,” says
filmmaker Lydia Nibley. “The experience transformed me from someone who had very little awareness, to someone who fully embraces gender diversity, because I see how much it adds to all of our lives. And learning that there was a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female, and that there is a place of honor in many Native American cultures for people across a spectrum of sexuality and gender expression, has been a gift.” Tuesday, June 14, 5:45pm San Francisco Main Library 100 Larkin Street Thursday, June 16, 6:30pm Oakland Asian Cultural Center 338 Ninth Street The film is 60 minutes long. A discussion will follow. Info at kqed.org/events.

A Man with Many Hats
What was your path to KQED Radio’s Sacramento bureau? I came to California almost two decades ago for graduate school and never left! I spent seven years in local television news as an anchor and reporter before moving to radio ... eventually landing at KQED in the winter of 2003. It was a heck of a time to take the reins in Sacramento—that same week the petition to recall then-Governor Gray Davis hit the streets and kicked off a historic year. It hasn’t slowed down since. You’ve been blogging since 2004. What got you started? I started the blog “Capital Notes” largely to have an outlet for stories and pieces of information that we just couldn’t get on radio. That’s still pretty much the guiding principle. I also find the blog has both helped promote KQED’s radio coverage in political circles and helped open some doors for me in the Capitol with savvy insiders. Five years ago I added a weekly podcast to the blog, available through iTunes as KQED Capital Notes, which features me and other Capitol journalists offering a casual analysis of the week’s big stories every Friday.

You’re very busy on Twitter as well. Why has that been such a focus of your efforts? Twitter started, much like the blog, as an experiment. On Valentine’s Day weekend 2009, the legislature was locked in marathon sessions on the state budget crisis. I thought, “Well, I’ll give Twitter a shot as a news vehicle.” My tweets were largely behind-the-scenes kind of stuff about budget negotiations, tensions off the assembly and senate floor, and the general mood in Sacramento. From there, my twittering caught fire, and I’ve now expanded it to coverage of live events and to give snapshots of news through the day. Blogging, tweeting, podcasting, reporting for radio—how do you find the time to do it all? It can be tough, especially when there are multiple assignments in a given day. But radio is always the first priority at work. And at home, it’s my kids (as my wife reminds me when I’ve been typing away on the iPhone too long). What might KQED’s audience be surprised to learn about you? Hmmm. That I was a radio station DJ when I was 14? That I grew up in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, site of the Wright Brothers’ historic 1903 flight? That I regularly painted my face blue as an undergrad at Duke University basketball games? Take your pick!

To many radio listeners, KQED News Sacramento Bureau Chief John Myers is best known as the authoritative on-air source for inside information on the people and politics of state government. KQEDnews.org visitors, however, know him better as a blogger and host of the weekly “Capital Notes” podcast, which provides an in-depth look at California government. Still others know John on Twitter as @KQED_ CapNotes, where he tweets live coverage of state government meetings and the latest news from Sacramento. His tweets, blog posts, podcasts, and radio reports make John one of the most accessible—and busiest—KQED News staffers. How does he balance all his responsibilities? We caught up with him to find out.
