NEWS + NOTES
SOLD OUT: Rethinking Housing in America Podcast Series Explores Evictions SOLD OUT: Rethinking Housing in America offers thought-provoking stories about housing in a new season focused on evictions. Every year, at least 3.7 million evictions are filed in the United States. That’s far more than the number of homes that people lost to foreclosure at the height of the Great Recession. During the pandemic, millions more renters suddenly found themselves on the precipice of eviction — prompting unprecedented tenant protections and nearly $50 billion in assistance. While these measures were necessary to prevent widespread displacement, they were only temporary — a Band-Aid on our housing affordability crisis. As pandemic-related protections expire, a growing number of tenants, advocates, and political leaders are questioning the system of evictions and searching for ways to overhaul it — while confronting the long-standing discriminatory policies that have led to persistent racial inequality in housing.
• Episode 2: The Color of Evictions Evictions don’t affect everyone equally. Black renters, and Black women in particular, are more likely to be evicted than white renters. What’s driving these disparities? • Episode 3: The Landlord’s Game The decision to evict someone can affect their ability to find stable housing for years. Explore when and why landlords decide to evict.
• Episode 4: Landlord v. Tenant Tenants are far less likely than property owners to be represented by an attorney in eviction court, which makes it especially difficult for them to understand their rights and navigate the complex system. We visit New York and Fresno to explore the issue. • Episode 5: The Rent Eats First Falling behind on rent is the major reason that people are evicted, but how do you stop it? Help pay their rent. We look at the promise, the problems and the history of Section 8, as well as the push for guaranteed income.
Stay tuned for a bonus episode featuring the SOLD OUT audience later this month. You can find SOLD OUT podcasts at kqed.org/podcasts/soldout, on NPR One podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

• Episode 1: Evicted, a Suburban Story The place with the highest number of evictions in the Bay Area during the pandemic wasn’t Oakland or San Francisco; it was Antioch, a suburb that has been radically transformed by housing crises.

Sam Sanders Steps Down from It’s Been a Minute
RADIO
After twelve years at NPR and 500 episodes of a KQED Saturday morning favorite, It’s Been a Minute’s Sam Sanders is stepping down from the program. Working with a talented team of producers and editors, Sanders built a new kind of show that’s both celebratory, informative, inspiring and probing, bringing diverse topics and guests into a space that sounds and feels just like conversation among friends. “A thing I have always loved about It’s Been A Minute [IBAM] is that it’s kind of hard to define,” Sanders writes in his goodbye. “IBAM, at its core, is a show about the world we live in in which everyone you hear — the guests, the hosts the listeners — gets to be their fullest self. It embraces identity — the identities we all bring to our news consumption. The lived experiences we bring to the entertainment we consume, the art we create and all of the work we do. IBAM has always been, and will remain, a decidedly joyful rejection of the idea that news and current events must be discussed in a way that divorces who we are from what’s going on in the world. “I am so honored to have been able to test this theory twice a week, every week, for almost five years,” he adds. “At one of the greatest journalistic institutions in the world, no less.”
Sam Sanders; photo by Corey Seeholzer/NPR.
Although Sam is moving on, It’s Been A Minute will continue. Several guest hosts will be stepping in, including Elise Hu and others who have previously hosted or been featured as panelists on the show.

“Crowchella in Sunnyvale”
KQED’s The Bay’s style of storytelling got me hooked instantly. The team’s choice of words, music and editing helps paint a picture in the listener’s head. This episode is about clouds of crows, who have taken over downtown Sunnyvale like a scene out of The Birds. It’s a perfect example of the elements that made me a fan from the moment I pressed Play.

Don’t Miss This! I was barely five minutes into the first episode of Luna + Sophie when I knew this was going to be a winner — and it only got better from there. Another excellent Walter’s Choice offering (in German with English subtitles), Luna + Sophie follows these two Potsdam detectives as they navigate through unexpected cases and relatable family and relationship troubles. Sharp and confident from the get go, this is everything I want in a comfort crime show: lovable characters, clever mysteries and plenty of humor. Season 1 will be premiering on KQED on April 3 with no confirmed plans to air season 2. Lucky for you, both seasons will be available to binge on Passport starting March 31. — Emma Casley, KQED TV programming associate Photo courtesy of © 2018 ZDF.

Ken Burns Explores Benjamin Franklin’s Many Contradictions in a New Series During his lifetime (1706-1790), Benjamin Franklin lived through monumental change and was one of the most consequential people of his era and indeed all of U.S. history. He wrote influential essays, coined words and phrases still used today, established enduring institutions in Philadelphia, introduced groundbreaking theories about the natural world, developed lifesaving inventions and contributed to the founding of America. But he was also a participant in some of the horrors of American history — and full of
contradictions. He was a slave owner who went on to become an outspoken opponent of slavery. He denounced the white men who killed Indigenous people indiscriminately, but he also championed the expansion of white settlements onto Indigenous lands. He was loyal to the British Empire then worked hard to help win America’s independence. Explore his contributions and contradictions in Benjamin Franklin, a new two-part, four-hour Ken Burns series. Part 1 airs on April 4 at 8pm and 10pm, part 2 on April 5, also at 8pm and 10pm on KQED 9.
Thursday, April 28, at 8pm on KQED Plus Host Gyles Brandreth travels across Britain, visiting the places that inspired some of Britain’s most famous storytellers: Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, the Brontë Sisters and Thomas Hardy. Brandreth unlocks the secrets behind their novels and uncovers the true-life events that inspired some of the greatest stories ever told. Photo courtesy of American Public Televsion.

• Among his inventions are bifocal glasses; the lighning rod; the Franklin stove (more heat, less fuel); and the glass armonica — Beethoven and Mozart composed for it.
