Deep Look Springs into Its Tenth Season

Deep Look, KQED’s wildlife video series, launched its 10th season this year with more than 2 million YouTube subscribers, continuing to delight viewers by revealing hidden realms in nature. Each episode features close-up photography, whimsical writing and original music. The series explores hagfish slime, earthworm mating, mussel “beards" and frog tongues in 17 new videos this year.

On April 18, Deep Look will release an episode about bird’s nest fungi. These tiny mushrooms look just like eggs nestled inside a nest only the “eggs” are actually spore sacs. Raindrops send the spore sacs flying and spread the fungi around.

Marijuana: It’s Legal, But It’s Complicated

Optimistic advocates for marijuana legalization saw it as a chance to end or diminish an unregulated black market, to approach a more equitable justice system and to bring a steady source of revenue into state coffers. And yet, several years in, the reality of legal cannabis has proved challenging for enthusiasts and detractors. Leafly Senior Editor David Downs visited KQED’s event venue The Commons in 2022 for a conversation about the industry with a slate of cannabis insiders. The discussion centers on solutions to local bans; the answer to high taxes; optimizing legalization for access and equity; and the future of the legal cannabis market. We revisit this conversation on the eve of April 20, also known as 4/20, the unofficial “marijuana holiday.” KQED Live: Fixing Legal Cannabis plays on KQED on Wednesday, April 19, at 10pm with an overnight repeat Thursday at 1am. Listen on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM or on the KQED App.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now?

We asked Scheduling Desk Operations Associate Becca Bright for their recommendations.

STARTER EPISODE

“Why

Highway 280 Has So Few Billboards”

These short, digestible Bay Curious (from KQED) episodes are about those random intrusive thoughts that run through your head when you live in the Bay Area. I suggest starting with this episode because, as someone who grew up on the Peninsula, I’ve always wondered why Highway 280 is considerably more picturesque than the 101.

STARTER EPISODE

“Types of

Whales, Earwax and Underwater Sounds”

The Whalenerd's Podcast combines updates on Bay Area whale sightings, newly published whale research and obscure whale facts. This episode discusses MBARI’s Soundscape Listening Room. It's a livestream of a hydrophone positioned in Monterey’s submarine canyon where you can hear the deep clicks of sperm whales and the songs of courting humpbacks.

STARTER EPISODE

“Fighting

Well: Is Your Conflict Style Making or Breaking Your Relationships?”

We Can Do Hard Things podcast hosts Glennon Doyle and her wife Abby Wambach talk through all sorts of personal and interpersonal topics. This is a great starter episode because they discuss how they deal with new and recurring conflicts in their relationship and provide a perspective that others can learn from.

There have been so many amazing Walter's Choice titles coming to Passport that it’s hard to recommend just one. Here are a few shows premiering this month. Coming April 6, Dignity follows a Chilean prosecutor as he builds his case against a Nazi cult leader. I Know Who You Are is a Spanish-language drama that uncovers the mystery behind a successful lawyer who has total amnesia; it’s available April 20. Finally, we’re getting Season 2 of Astrid, a French procedural that centers on a woman on the autism spectrum who assists in crime investigations. I loved Season 1 and can’t wait to spend more time with Astrid starting April 20. These and many other Walter's Choice titles are available to Passport members. —Emma Casley, TV Programming Associate

Tom Jones, a Classic Rom-Com, Comes to MASTERPIECE in a New Four-Part Series

I was an English lit major in college, not a surprise considering what I do for a living. The best part of my college studies certainly wasn’t writing countless literary-analysis papers; it was reading lots of great literature. Back then, I read Tom Jones, a Foundling (the book’s full title) by Henry Fielding, written and set in eighteenth-century England, but it wasn’t my favorite. The syntax and language were so odd to me that it was as if I were reading a book in a foreign language. Still, I appreciated the humor and the story itself even if college-age me couldn't wade through all of the writing.

Now there’s a new MASTERPIECE adaptation, Tom Jones, a series that’s fabulous and infinitely more accessible than the book was for me. Tom is a cheeky guy who falls in love with an heiress, but their class differences and the people around them make it difficult for them to be together. This production is beautiful to look at as Tom pursues love through scandalous (to some) and hilarious adventures.

The four-part Tom Jones series begins on Sunday, April 30 on KQED 9 at 9pm and ends on Sunday, May 21. You can also catch it on Passport and on the PBS App.

DID YOU KNOW? Little-Known Early Literature

• The Book of Margery Kempe (circa 1436), a medieval manuscript, is the story of a Norfolk, England, woman and is often cited as the first autobiography in English.

• Published in 1666, The Description of a New World, Called the Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish is believed by many to be the first science fiction novel written and published by a woman.

• Miss Marjoribanks by Margaret Oliphant (1866) is cited by Columbia Professor James Adams as a “a very refreshing tonic to saccharine stereotypes of Victorian womanhood.”

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE

The Man in the White Suit

Saturday, April 1, at 8pm on KQED 9

In this 1951 film, altruistic chemist Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness) invents a fabric that’s impervious to the elements and creates a white suit that can’t stain or wrinkle. At first he’s celebrated as a hero, but big business and labor realize it must be suppressed for economic reasons.
