Culinary indulgence is in full bloom this spring as Check, Please! Bay Area makes a splash with a new season and KQED’s new digital food series, Beyond the Menu, debuts to tell the history of our favorite dishes.
First, catch up with host and wine connoisseur Leslie Sbrocco for Season 19 of Check, Please! as it ventures into the new, delicious territory of the Monterey Bay Area. Food enthusiasts share their recommendations for the best meals from Carmel Valley to Capitola, and they do not disappoint. Highlights include hidden gems such as Seaside’s The Butter House, where Filipino and Pacific Island flavors fuse with traditional American breakfasts, and beloved venues like Shadowbrook, where the signature Pacific Rim salmon and prime rib continues to delight diners. At Cafe Fina, on Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf, meals such as pistachio pasta with prawns and steamed black mussels make for a sumptuous sampling. To round out the excitement for Season 19, the day before this issue went to press, we learned that Check, Please! won the Viewer’s Choice Award for Best City or Regional Program in the 15th Annual Taste Awards! Be sure to tune in for a season like no other on Thursday, April 18, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.
With your palate awakened, switch your focus to Beyond the Menu where host Cecilia Phillips interviews food experts to uncover surprising facts about the cultural history of ingredients and techniques used in today’s most popular dishes. This celebration of multicultural cuisine kicks off on KQED’s Food YouTube channel on March 20. Visit youtube.com/@KQEDFood to start watching.

All Things Considered
Think of it as spring cleaning for the mind: With every episode, Hidden Brain offers a fresh take on why we make the decisions we make. From its You 2.0 series to a recent in-depth exploration of how partisanship works, the show “explores the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior.” Host Shankar Vedantam eschews easy answers and you-can-do-it platitudes in favor of facts, science and nuance. Expert guests weigh in on human memory, attention spans, feelings — and how to make the most of our inevitable mistakes. One episode considers this thought-provoking question: “What would Socrates do?” It’s a show for cleaning the house or the car and maybe even the mind.
Hidden Brain plays on KQED Sundays at 4am and 7pm. Listen on KQED 88.5 FM or on the KQED App. Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant
When one of your appliances or electronics breaks, do you buy a new one or try to fix it yourself? Many people find the challenge of fix-it-yourself projects so daunting, they opt to replace the broken item. But our disposable culture doesn’t have to be the norm. In the episode “A Growing ‘Right to Repair’ Culture in California” on KQED’s podcast The Bay, Azul Dahlstrom-Eckman explores the new “Right to Repair” law, which intends to make it easier for everyday people to fix their own stuff. By requiring increased transparency and information from manufacturers, the law is designed to give consumers what they need to handle repairs themselves.
During the episode, Dahlstrom-Eckman takes us to a fix-it clinic in Redwood City where volunteers are teaching do-ityourself skills to others in the community. Don’t miss this fascinating look at an expanding solution for sustainability.
The Bay is available on the KQED App or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don’t miss KQED’s other popular shows, including Bay Curious, Forum, The California Report, The California Report Magazine, MindShift, Rightnowish, Sold Out, Perspectives and Political Breakdown.

Animal Babies: First Year on Earth
I loved watching this enchanting nature show that follows a few of the world’s rarest animal babies and the challenges they face their first year in the wild. My favorite episode was “New Frontiers,” the third in the series. I found it a gratifying way to get lost in nature and see these adorable yet struggling little ones learn how to survive. This episode follows Nyakabara, a baby mountain gorilla learning to climb and forage for food in the island forest of Uganda. We also meet Fayla, a rare white arctic fox cub, as he learns to use his instincts to find food before the frigid winter. The entire series is available now for Passport members.
Emily Horne, KQED Finance AssociateMr. Bates vs The Post Office on MASTERPIECE
Based on the real-life British Post Office scandal, this series tells the story of hundreds of people who were wrongly accused of theft due to a faulty IT system. Binge all four episodes starting on April 7, the night of its broadcast premiere, with Passport.
Lucy Lawless stars in this modern-day Australian detective drama as retired cop Alexa Crowe. Whether Alexa wants to or not, she can’t seem to stop solving crime. Passport members can get a head start on this series on April 1, before its broadcast premiere on April 4.

With Earth Day approaching, April is the perfect time to celebrate the natural world. And this year, nature is offering something truly special: a total solar eclipse. In anticipation of this extraordinary cosmic event, NOVA is going inside the phenomenon, exploring how and why eclipses happen.
Until 2044, this will be the last total eclipse we’ll see, so tune in to learn how to watch it safely — and, for anyone who will be in the path of the eclipse, how to prepare for four minutes of complete darkness. (The last American eclipse in 2017 plunged witnesses into darkness for only half as long.)
This episode is an opportunity to follow scientists as they work to unlock secrets of our Sun — from why its atmosphere is hundreds of times hotter than its surface to what causes solar storms and how we might one day predict them. Having never seen an eclipse myself, I am going to be positioned in my backyard and ready to experience this rare astronomical event with my dog at my side. What could be more appropriate for celebrating nature’s spectacular glory than the companionship of another species? Watch the episode on Wednesday, April 3, at 8pm on KQED 9.
Elyce Berrigan, Managing EditorKQED public media has been informing, inspiring and involving the San Francisco Bay Area for seventy years. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.

Check your May issue for air dates and times America’s national night of remembrance returns live from the U.S. capitol for a special 35th anniversary broadcast. Through personal stories and tributes and featuring world-renowned artists with the National Symphony Orchestra, this moving event takes us to the real heart of Memorial Day.

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE
A Place in the Sun Saturday, April 27, at 8pm on KQED 9
This 1951 American drama inspired by the novel and play An American Tragedy, follows George Eastman (Montgomery Clift), a blue-collar worker new to a job at his wealthy industrialist uncle's factory, and the tragic love triangle he’s in with co-worker Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters) and socialite Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor).

Each spring, Bay Area youth take over KQED’s TV, radio and digital channels and have their say about the issues affecting their lives. Now in its seventh season, Youth Takeover week features vibrant and thoughtful youth voices on shows such as Rightnowish, Forum and Political Breakdown. “We believe young people need to see themselves represented in public media,” says KQED Chief Content Officer Holly Kernan, “and that their perspectives can spark intergenerational conversations that give us all a richer understanding of the
multifaceted communities that make up the Bay Area.” This year’s cohort of participants includes more than 300 students from 14 high school classrooms in seven Bay Area counties. Student Khadeejah Khan says Youth Takeover empowers “youth to use their voice to bring change, tell stories and create empathy across all age groups.” Tune in live Monday, April 22, to Friday, April 26, or visit the showcase at kqed.org/youthtakeover
