PODCAST SERIES
The ‘MindShift’ Podcast Series Returns Tackling the New Learning Landscape After two extraordinary school years, what does the future of education look like? What do students need most to support their learning and a return to classrooms? What did teachers learn during the pandemic that they’ll want to carry forward to better their classrooms — and what will they want to scrap? In the sixth season of the MindShift podcast, co-hosts Ki Sung and Nimah Gobir use solutions-driven storytelling to tackle relevant education issues. They include inaccurate grading practices hiding in plain sight, the harm of toxic positivity, fostering mental health and how data science could help students who have been marginalized by math instruction — all during a still uncertain return to classrooms for many students and teachers. This new season also includes three 10-minute mini-episodes of MindShift featuring a notable educator or researcher and addressing news events in the education world as they happen. The first features a conversation with Dr. Sonja Cherry Paul who wrote the New York Times bestseller Stamped (For Kids): Racism, Antiracism, and You, which is an adaption of Ibram X.
Kendi and Jason Reynolds’ best-selling book, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, aimed at young teen readers. You can find new episodes of MindShift podcasts every other Tuesday through September 28 wherever you get your podcasts, or at kqed.org/mindshiftpodcast.
PODCASTS
What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Nicole Barton, KQED’s Audience Development Manager. Here are her picks.
STARTER EPISODE
“In Good Faith”
I’ve been anticipating the launch of On Our Watch for a while — and it exceeds my expectations. KQED and NPR put together one of the most intense investigative podcasts I’ve ever heard; this episode kicks off the series. Not only is the story and investigative journalism really compelling, the episode is sound-rich, full of sound bites from police interviews and investigations.
STARTER EPISODE
“The 7 Hardest Conversations I’ve Ever Had on This Show”
STARTER EPISODE
“Socialism: 101”
Socialism is a hot topic on my social feed these days, but I haven’t been able to sink into its history until this episode of Planet Money from NPR. I was particularly interested in hearing its history in the U.S. and how some socialist policies exist today in police departments, public schools and Medicare. It’s a great antidote to tl;dr (too long; didn’t read), explaining what you need to know.
KQ E D.O RG • AU G U S T 2 0 2 1
On WNYC’s Death Sex & Money podcast, Anna Sale shares the seven hardest conversations she’s had on the podcast, which already focuses on conversations about tough issues. It’s really well-made and curated with some of the best — and most intense — bits. And it offers up some great advice from Sale about how to be a good interviewer and host.

Lucy Worsley is one of my favorite public television hosts. As much as I believe I have the best job in the world, hers also seems like a dream. As the chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces, author and esteemed television host, she dives into some of history’s best stories and gets decked out in some truly amazing costumes as she brings history to life. We premiered the first three episodes of Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths and Secrets last year, learning the true stories of Elizabeth I, Queen Anne and Marie Antoinette. All three are available now for KQED Passport members to catch up as we wait for the next three episodes to come to KQED 9. They begin on August 29 with Henry VIII’s Reformation. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

‘Wicked in Concert’: The Music Minus the Musical Featuring Stellar Singers Wicked in Concert, which airs August 29 on KQED 9 at 9pm, plucks the music from the musical and pairs it with fresh orchestral arrangements and celebrity vocalists, including Rita Moreno and others across musical genres. Hosted by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who both starred in the original Broadway cast, the music is staged in intimate concert settings in Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; and New York City. Hearing the hauntingly beautiful songs, you may find yourself melting, though not in the same way the Wicked Witch did. —Ellyn Hament
In The Wizard of Oz, the bubbly Good Witch Glinda and the emerald-green Wicked Witch of the West were enemies, but what if it wasn’t always that way? Wicked, the book by Gregory Maguire that became a hit Broadway play, imagines a backstory, which focuses on the witches unlikely friendship, personal empowerment and what it means to be different. Wicked has been seen in more than 15 countries by more than 55 million people. And lots of its songs have made it into our collective American songbook, including “Defying Gravity,” “For Good” and “Popular.”
Sunday, August 15, at 9pm on KQED 9 In the season finale, Cassie and Sunny take on a cold case that has alarming connections to the police force. Is the police force trustworthy? See what they discover and find out where this latest adventure takes these two. Photo courtesy of ©Mainstreet Pictures LTD.

The Killing Fields
Saturday, August 28, at 8pm on KQED 9 Pol Pot’s bloody campaign in Cambodia was brutal; millions of “undesirable” civilians were murdered. This riveting real-life story is based on the lives of New York Times journalist Sydney Shanberg and Dith Pran, his Cambodian colleague and translator. When it’s too dangerous to stay, one escapes, but the other doesn’t. It’s a powerful story of two journalists and the bond between them. Photo courtesy of American Public Television.
