Thanks to nearly 5,000 individual donors, KQED successfully completed Campaign 21, which modernizes KQED’s infrastructure and expands our newsroom, coverage and services to better serve Bay Area audiences.
during emergencies. The station’s entire technical infrastructure has been upgraded to increase our digital and broadcast capabilities and to support a seven-day-a-week broadcast with breaking news and online content published around the clock.
Launched in 2013, Campaign 21 funded the redesign of our San Francisco headquarters. This vastly reimagined home provides new spaces and engagement opportunities for community participation. A new community-oriented wing of the building includes the PRX Podcast Garage, Community Meeting Room, Producers Space and Audience Lab. The Commons, the building’s 232-seat public event space, is the setting for KQED Live, a dynamic event series showcasing thoughtful dialogue and storytelling, performances, screenings, food experiences and live radio and podcast shows year-round.
In addition, Campaign 21 grew our talented team of reporters, ensuring that we tell the stories that matter most from every angle, and deliver them to you — how, when and where you get your information whether it’s on the radio, television, phone, tablet, computer or smart speaker. The additional staff enables us to create new programs — from web series such as If Cities Could Dance to podcasts such as The Bay; and new services from specialized reporting desks such as our housing desk to educational platforms including KQED Learn and KQED Teach.
Additional features include new digital production spaces, edit suites, post-production spaces and enhanced capacity for broadcast continuity
The entire KQED team thanks all of the generous Campaign 21 contributors who have made this transformation possible.

Don’t Miss This Now is the perfect chance to catch up on the critically acclaimed crime drama series Broadchurch. Follow detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller as they weave through an intensely personal case: the murder of a young boy in a tight-knit seaside town. They quickly realize there’s more to this tragedy than meets the eye, and its reverberations threaten to tear the community apart. This chillingly addictive series features captivating performances by a who’s who of beloved British actors, including Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, and not one but two Doctor Whos: David Tennant and Jodi Whittaker. Once you start watching, you won’t be able to stop. Lucky for you, seasons 1–3 of Broadchurch are streaming beginning November 27 for KQED Passport members. —Emma Casley, KQED TV Programming Associate

Call the Midwife Holiday Special: Mother Mildred. Photo courtesy of BBC / Nealstreet Productions / Sally Mais.
New Call the Midwife Holiday Special Brings Back Mother Mildred, Warms the Season On Christmas 2018, my cousin was nine months pregnant and was not having a particularly good time. Many issues and bizarre symptoms occurred and our family was extremely concerned about her. Fortunately, she gave birth two days later to a healthy baby girl. Although it’s been nearly four years since she was born, I can’t forget how my cousin’s first pregnancy experience was filled with terrifying complications. Perhaps if she had the support of a midwife, our family would not have been as anxiety-ridden as we were. But it’s moments like being on the brink of bringing new life into this world, on a special
day like Christmas, that reminds me of the magic and wonder of what it means to simply exist. In Call the Midwife Holiday Special, travel back even further to Christmas 1966 where the Nonnatus House staff are faced with their busiest Christmas day to date. The Maternity Home is filled with expectant moms and challenging cases, but luckily Mother Mildred is on hand to support the team. This special episode airs on Saturday, December 25, at 9pm on KQED 9. — Sophie Kim, KQED Marketing Communications Intern
Sunday, December 19, at 6:30pm on KQED 9 You know her as one of the judges on The Great British Bake Off. Now join the esteemed Mary Berry as she explores a stately mansion, Harewood House in Yorkshire, and cooks treats inspired by the festive foods of the past. Photo courtesy of GBH.

DID YOU KNOW? MIDWIVES • Nurse midwifery programs didn’t exist in California prior to 1975. Susan Leibel and Rosemary Mann worked with the California legislature to create midwifery licensure in the state. • In 1975, obstetricians and certified nurse midwives collaborated to establish the midwifery service at San Francisco General Hospital, which was the first hospital-based midwifery practice in San Francisco.
C OMING IN JANUARY
Around the World in 80 Days on Masterpiece Can Phileas Fogg circumnavigate the world in 80 days? The classic Jules Verne action adventure gets a minseries makeover in this new Masterpiece adaptation starring David Tennant (Good Omens, Broadchurch and Doctor Who).
Me and Orson Welles
Saturday, December 11, at 8pm on KQED 9 A teenage aspiring actor (Zac Efron) is thrown into the middle of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater Company, which is preparing to open what became an historic staging of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Also starring Claire Danes and directed by Richard Linklater, it was named one of the top ten films of 2009 by The National Board of Review. Photo courtesy of American Public Television.

What Makes San Jose the Bay Area’s Greatest Immigrant Food City? To outsiders, San Jose is better known as a tech hub than a food destination, but people who have spent time in the city’s vibrant immigrant and refugee communities know better. KQED’s Food Editor Luke Tsai believes that if San Jose has any distinguishing characteristic, it’s that it is, far and away, the Bay Area’s greatest immigrant food city: the city of Vietnamese malls and Mexican flea market taco stands — and home of the Bay Area’s most delicious Somali food, its most exceptional pho and its most decadent torta. Through a series of online features, essays and guides, Tsai and a team of contributors take you on a journey through San Jose’s immigrant foods and communities, exploring, for example, how Vietnamese Americans made San Jose America’s tofu capital, and how the Bay Area’s most famous Ethiopian restaurant started with a love story. Visit La Pulga, the San Jose flea market “that no urban village can ever replace,” which is now facing an uncertain future, and discover some of the foods found there. And finally learn how San Jose’s Japantown stayed the same for seventy years with change now coming. See what makes San Jose the Bay Area’s best immigrant food city in this eight-story series of articles available at kqed.org/sanjosefood. Illustration by Thien Pham.
