RADIO

Forum Repeats get a bad reputation. But, if you ask this writer, they really shouldn’t. As the days of the year tick down, many programs replay some of their favorite, most-memorable shows. It’s a chance to catch things you missed and reflect on the year that was. Last year, in the final week of December, Forum re-aired conversations with poet Javier Zamora; science writer Ed Yong; Bay Area author Ingrid Rojas Contreras; and a great panel on the year’s best movies. What will they choose this year? You’ll have to listen to find out — even this writer doesn’t know. So whether you work straight through or take half the month off, tune in that last week of December to catch up on some of 2023’s best conversations. Forum plays live on KQED weekdays at 9 and 10am, with a repeat at 8 and 9pm. Listen on KQED 88.5 FM or on the KQED App. —Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant

PODCASTS

Did you know you can listen to KQED whenever and wherever you want?

How do I listen? Most people listen on their phones or in their cars. There are podcast apps that come already installed on every phone. On iPhone, it’s simply called “Podcasts,” and on Android, it’s “Google Podcasts.” A lot of people choose to listen on other apps like Spotify too! Here’s how to get started: 1. Open your podcast app of choice. 2. Search for your favorite KQED podcast or radio show or simply type in KQED. 3. Choose an episode that strikes your interest, and enjoy!

KQ E D.O RG • D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 3

What are podcasts? Podcasts are like taking the radio with you anywhere you go and listening to your favorite shows whenever you want. They’ve been around since the early 2000s but have really become more prominent in the last couple of years — and KQED has some of the best! Whether you’re curious about the Bay Area's hidden stories (Bay Curious), interested in the future of learning (MindShift), like to stay connected to California's diverse issues (The California Report) or want to explore something else, KQED has got you covered.

In the TV programming department, we start working on our schedules two to three months ahead of time, which means we started thinking about holiday programming even earlier than some of the displays started appearing in stores. Luckily, I love the holidays, and I am thrilled that Passport offers so much in addition to what can be found on broadcast. I find myself returning over and over again to enjoy the music on In Performance at the White House: Spirit of the Season and Happy Holidays with Bing and Frank; to find recipe inspiration from holiday-themed episodes of America’s Test Kitchen and Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas; to learn the holiday history on Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas and Cultural Expressions: Kwanzaa; and to discover decorating ideas on programs like J. Schwanke’s Life in Bloom: Holidays for Blooms. There are also full films on Passport, including Scrooge (1935) and A Christmas Wish (1950). Wishing everyone Happy Holidays! —Meredith Speight, Director, TV Programming

One Mystery Queen Investigates Another which airs every Friday at 8pm on KQED Plus), Christie is a literary record-holder. According to the Guinness World Records, Agatha Christie is the world’s best-selling author of all time, having sold more than two billion copies.

My favorite blonde historian is back for more sleuthing! With a vast portfolio that includes popular KQED TV shows like Lucy Worsley Investigates; Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths and Secrets; and Blitz Spirit with Lucy Worsley, there is no person more qualified (in my opinion) to investigate the ultimate mystery queen, the late Dame Agatha Christie, than our famed British author/curator/television presenter herself. Christie, a writer during the Golden Age of detective fiction, is often referred to as the “Queen of Crime.” Having written an overwhelming amount of work comprising more than 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections (including every plot to the crimesolving adventures of Agatha Christie’s Poirot,

When considering the sheer amount of work Christie put into this world, one could only wonder how her mind came up with so much material. That is why Lucy Worsley has set out to explore the enigma of Agatha Christie over the span of three episodes.
