All Creatures Great and Small Returns in a New Adaptation No bull (but maybe a few bulls): All Creatures Great and Small, the beloved show about a country veterinarian, is back in a new Masterpiece adaptation, a seven-part series with a new cast. If you were a fan of the previous incarnation, which ran from 1979 to 2000, or if you’ve never seen the series, it's funny and touching, and the reason why so many people love it is easy to see. Based on the popular book series by James Herriot, published in the 1970s, All Creatures Great and Small opens in 1937, when a young veterinarian named James Herriot, just out of college, follows his dream to become a country vet in gorgeously green Yorkshire, England. He’s reluctantly hired by the quirky Samuel West and soon discovers that his job is as much about treating the animals as it is about treating the farmers, who aren’t easily pleased.
The series stars some familiar folks as well as newcomers. Nicholas Ralph makes his television debut as the vet. Samuel West (from Mr. Selfridge) plays Siegfried Farnon, West’s eccentric boss and the proprietor of Skeldale House. Anna Madeley (from Patrick Melrose) is Mrs. Hall, the housekeeper matriarch of Skeldale House. Siegfried’s younger brother is played by Callum Woodhouse (The Durrells in Corfu), and Rachel Shenton stars as Helen Anderson, an independent woman and farmer’s daughter. And the inimitable Dame Diana Rigg (from the old The Avengers and, later, Game of Thrones), in her final television role before her death, plays Mrs. Pumphrey, who owns an overly pampered Pekingese named Tricki Woo. The British publication The Telegraph calls All Creatures Great and Small “all rolling hills and timeless charm … a breath of fresh air.” With so many anxiety-producing events in the world, we can all use some of that. All Creatures Great and Small premieres on Sunday, January 10, at 9pm on KQED 9 and airs for seven consecutive Sunday nights. —Ellyn Hament
DID YOU KNOW?
• More than 20,000 people live and work in Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are about 30 times more sheep than people there, according to one estimate. • There have been dairies in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales since medieval times. —Sabrina Zehnder

This new adaptation continues the upbeat spirit and uplifting values of Herriot’s characters and his entertaining and funny stories of country life in northern England. And the focus on the importance of community in our lives gives Herriot’s work an enduring power and resonates with current times, reminding us that belonging to a community can make us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.

Shows We Love: Selected Shorts If you tuned in to KQED on Christmas morning, we hope you enjoyed a delicious breakfast while listening to some delightful stories of holiday highs and lows on Selected Shorts’ holiday special. If you’re more of a morning or weekday KQED listener, this may have been your first time hearing this program, but good news — you can catch Selected Shorts every Saturday at 8pm.
to catch the end of a radio program. We love this show for its ability to spark laughter, smiles and even tears. If you’d like to relive the feel of a live show from home on a Saturday evening or even just tune out of the news cycle, please join us for an evening of storytelling with Selected Shorts, Saturdays at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM.
A staple of KQED weekend radio for over three decades, Selected Shorts started in 1985 on the stage at Symphony Space in New York City. Actors read stories from across the literary spectrum — from Anton Chekhov to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie — and bring them to life. The performances, recorded in front of a packed and live audience, become the lively weekly Selected Shorts show. You’ll hear stories read by actors such as Rainn Wilson, Phillipa Soo and LeVar Burton. The show is known for its “driveway moments.” Yup, it’s not just you; it’s a real phenomenon that happens when people pull into the driveway and stay in the car

PODCASTS
What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Sasha Khokha, host of The California Report Magazine, what she recommends. Here are her picks. STARTER EPISODE
“A Butterfly with My Wings Cut Off”
KQED’s The California Report Magazine’s weekly show often features compelling 30-minute only-inCalifornia documentaries. This episode, however, is about someone’s dream of coming to California. Luna Guzman is a transgender asylum seeker from Guatemala and her incredible story, reported over two years in three countries, will inspire you.

“Billy Balls and His Babygirl”
The Ballad of Billy Balls podcast has gotten me through the pandemic: serialized storytelling at its very best with a mix of 1970s punk, mystery and a passionate love affair at the center. It came out in 2019 as part of the Crimetown series, but is still the podcast I recommend to all my friends.

In the Mojave Desert there’s a little town with a bizarre past. This gripping crime thriller podcast, called California City, uncovers the deep history of the deceptive sales pitches that have brought people to the place with that same name for decades. It’s a tale about money, power and deception, starting with a man who went to the Mojave for a free vacation and ended up signing away his life.

We’re all ready to celebrate the promise of a better year in 2021. For drama lovers, the year starts strong this January with several new Masterpiece dramas. On January 10, the night of Masterpiece’s 50th anniversary, KQED Passport members can binge-stream the entire first season of All Creatures Great and Small, the glorious new adaptation of the beloved book series about James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire. The cast is amazing (including the final television role of Dame Diana Rigg), and the show was such a hit when it aired in the United Kingdom this fall that it’s already been renewed for a second season. We’re hoping there will be many more seasons. The series is truly a pleasure to watch, and there’s no better time than now to share in Herriot’s humor, compassion and love of life. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

PBS American Portrait Presents a Picture of Who We Are Today
JANUARY PICKS
What does it really mean to be an American today? About a year ago, PBS asked that question and, as part of its 50th anniversary, launched a national storytelling project, PBS American Portrait, the most ambitious project in the organization’s history. Americans were invited to answer prompts, including: “I was raised to believe … "What keeps me up at night is …" and “My American dream is…” The website collected more than 11,000 stories nationwide, and millions of people visited the site throughout 2020 to explore the crowdsourced stories. —Ellyn Hament From these stories, themes surfaced and became the basis for four PBS American Portrait episodes airing this month, beginning on January 5, all on KQED 9. — I Dream: the state of the American dream Tuesday, January 5, at 9pm — I Work: career aspirations, struggles and successes Tuesday, January 12, at 9pm — I Keep: our traditions Tuesday, January 19, at 9pm — I Rise: building an antiracist America Tuesday, January 26, at 9pm
America’s Test Kitchen from Cooks Illustrated Monday, January 4, at 7pm on KQED 9 This new “At-Home” season takes you into the team’s own kitchens, offering up the regular features and adding some new spice. Saturday, January 9, at 8pm on KQED 9 It doesn’t get much better than this classic 1954 film, which stars Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint and features Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger. Brando plays a boxer who tangles with corrupt union bosses. The story and screenplay were both based on Pulitzer Prize-winning articles that appeared in 1948 in the New York Sun. Budd Schulberg wrote the script, Elia Kazan directed it and Leonard Bernstein composed the score. On the Waterfront won a whopping eight Academy Awards including Best Picture.
