NEWS + NOTES

KQED’s Education Team Elevates and Amplifies Diverse Youth Voices The 2020–2021 school year presented enormous challenges for everyone in and supporting schools. At KQED, we were honored to do our part — particularly by elevating the voices of diverse youth to a national audience. As a public media station, we seek to raise up traditionally underrepresented voices and lend our expertise to teach youth how to effectively share their perspectives. In doing so, we hope to expand KQED’s general audience’s understanding across generations and communities and provide the opportunity for young people to share their voices in civic spaces through public media. One of the biggest highlights of the 2020 to 2021 school year was our inaugural Election 2020 Youth Media Challenge, which was followed by several additional Challenge topics and a public, online showcase of student media projects nationwide. And Above the Noise, Education’s signature YouTube series for students, gained 2 million total views — almost half from Gen Z. To learn more about our Education team’s work and impact, download the KQED Education Annual Report: 2021-2022 at kqed.org/education/annual-report.

Truly CA is KQED’s Emmy Award-winning, short-documentary showcase featuring filmmakers worldwide who tell stories specific to the Golden State. In January, the series features two short films centered on the impact of recent disasters on California teens. In Last Days at Paradise High, which airs on January 14 at 8pm on KQED 9, you’ll meet two high school seniors and their teacher. The kids grapple with the classic teenage drama of fading youth — and because the fire destroyed Paradise, the added angst of searching for home after it’s gone. Another short film, The Titan Rises, which airs on January 21 at 8pm on KQED 9, focuses on the Skyline High School football team in Oakland as it prepares for a delayed season due to the pandemic. Follow along as the head coach and the team navigate playing football, the life and death struggle on Oakland’s streets and the toll it takes on inner-city athletes. To stream these short documentaries and others from Truly CA, please visit youtube.com/kqedarts.

RADIO

What’s Up for KQED Public Radio in 2022? I’m Ernesto Aguilar and I’m honored to serve as KQED’s newest Director of Radio Programming. I came to KQED on the strength of its outstanding audio, which is made possible by your generosity. We provide the reporting you trust and bring you the news, politics and arts and culture coverage you value — from Forum to Political Breakdown to our evocative newscasts. As part of our commitment to keeping KQED relevant, we also deliver podcasts, stream KQED Live events, air educational endeavors with local students as well initiatives such as KQED En Español and other series and shows. In the new year, we have even more in store for you. Expect more of our signature journalism. We'll keep an eye on midterm elections, housing issues and pivotal Supreme Court rulings. We’ll bolster the local news you rely on to keep you informed. We’ll deliver news specials that will provide deeper insight into the stories you care about. And we'll help give context to what's happening in the Bay Area. The California Newsroom, a statewide news hub led by KQED, will focus on what matters most to Californians. Finally, in 2022, KQED will do more to welcome and serve diverse next-generation listeners, aiming to make them feel more at home.

As we build on this remarkable legacy for an even brighter tomorrow, feel free to reach out at kqed.org/radiofeedback. I look forward to learning from you.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Caroline Smith, KQED’s engagement producer for MindShift and Forum, what she recommends. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“Neglect of Duty”

On Our Watch is the definition of accountability journalism — the podcast uncovers once-sealed California police records and tells their stories using the voices of people impacted. Each episode is harrowing, but I've especially thought about "Neglect of Duty" every week since it aired, and the human error that caused life-altering harm.

STARTER EPISODE

Andrea Lee's reading of "Barn Burning" on the New Yorker Fiction Podcast was my introduction to Murakami. I often make fun of the way Murakami writes women (to paraphrase, "in the mirror she admired her breasts"), but the man knows how to tell a story that gets under your skin and Lee's reading amplifies the ending's gravitas.

STARTER EPISODE

“Bewitched with Dana Schwartz”

While I only listen to Blank Check episodes on movies I've seen, each episode’s two-hour-plus run time pays such loving attention to the featured film while also poking fun. This episode shows how you can both love making fun of the ridiculous 2005 film Bewitched and love it.

Don’t Miss This All Creatures Great and Small, Season 2

I’ve been waiting with absolute breathless anticipation for the new season of All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece. The first season was magnificent: a cozy and comforting balm for the soul during the turmoil of last year. It was KQED’s most-watched television program of 2021 and many viewers, including my family and I, couldn’t wait for the next episode and took full advantage of streaming opportunities to binge. The new season will also be available to stream on KQED Passport with all episodes available on the night of the premiere (January 9). I can’t wait to start our season two marathon and return to the English countryside and the lives of James Herriot, his surrogate family and (most importantly, according to my kids) the animals — both great and small. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming Photo courtesy of MASTERPIECE.

Moving San Francisco In case you missed it when it was broadcast in late 2021, you can stream the story of San Francisco transit with KQED Passport. From cable cars that conquered imposing hills to current ridesharing companies and autonomous vehicles, the documentary takes a look at San Francisco’s transit — past and future.

DID YOU KNOW? • In the late 1800s, educated veterinarians were needed to care for urban working horses in San Francisco. In response, the San Francisco College of Veterinary Surgeons and Dentists was founded in 1899 by Dr. E. J. Creely.

• James Herriot’s real name was James Alfred Wight. He used a pen name because the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons frowned on members who advertised.
