Photo of Chuck D courtesy of BBC Studios.Part adventure, part history lesson and part treasure hunt, Antiques Roadshow is the show where people bring what they hope are treasures to be appraised by experts. One of the most enduring (27 seasons!) and beloved PBS series, the show reveals winners and losers: people who discover that their objects, often heirlooms, are worth way more than they imagined or, sadly, much less.
Produced by PBS member station GBH in Boston, the show traveled to the Bay Area last June to tape episodes at Filoli Historic House and Gardens in Woodside. As the local host, KQED staff and more than 100 volunteers attended the 12-hour taping. Over the course of the day, we welcomed more than 2,500 attendees at check-in; hosted a KQED booth where staff handed out swag; and, in the spirt of the event, created a mini museum featuring pledge and member gifts and trinkets from KQED’s nearly 70-year history.
Antiques Roadshow episodes at Filoli will premiere on January 2, 9, and 16, at 8pm on KQED 9 and will also stream on the PBS Video App. Sink into your sofa and see what your Bay Area neighbors bring to this fun show, hear the stories and history behind the objects and discover what they’re worth.
Hungry for more Check, Please! Bay Area? Host Leslie Sbrocco returns this month to chat with local guests and to introduce you to your next favorite Bay Area dining destination. In each episode of the award-winning series, Bay Area residents recommend their favorite place to eat and the other guests visit to check it out then join Sbrocco to discuss, debate and dish on their dining experiences. At the end of each episode, reporter Cecilia Phillips samples a fun, off-the-beaten-path locale to uncover some delightful foods. From plant-based comfort fare in Oakland to island vibes and tropical specialties in Vallejo, shareable Turkish meze in San Francisco to hog heaven in Petaluma, we’ve scoured the Bay for the best bites so you don’t have to. Catch the new episodes on Thursdays beginning January 12, at 7:30pm on KQED 9 through February 16. See all Check, Please! Bay Area listings, starting on page 13, for the names of the eateries in each episode.

Rebecca Solnit is one of the Bay Area’s most respected writers, but even that introduction may be an understatement; Solnit could also be called one of the region’s most respected historians, activists and thinkers. Her more than 20 books include Men Explain Things to Me, Hope in the Dark, Orwell’s Roses and A Field Guide to Getting Lost. This past summer, Solnit came to KQED Live, our event series, to discuss the launch of her climate project called Not Too Late, which invites newcomers to the climate movement and provides climate facts and encouragement for people “who are already engaged but weary.” We revisit that conversation at another time of weary engagement, the first week of the year. Here’s one more description for Solnit: not to be missed.
Rebecca Solnit at KQED Live airs Wednesday, January 4, at 10pm with a repeat on Thursday, January 5, at 1am. Listen on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM or stream it on the KQED App. —Devin Holt, On-air Digital Programming Assistant
What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked KQED Podcasts Engagement Producer César Saldaña for his recommendations.
An arts and culture podcast about the Bay Area, Rightnowish never ceases to entertain and educate. In this episode, Neo-soul and hip-hop artist Jada Imani gets her inspiration from a range of lived experiences: parking tickets, lessons from her parents and Mac Dre lyrics.
Celebrities voice stories about love of all kinds in Modern Love, a collaboration between the New York Times and WBUR. For a good cry, listen to Sarah Paulson read the profoundly moving story “Open Adoption, Not So Simple Math” about a birth-mother’s experience with adoption and loving her son.
Co-produced by WBUR and Futuro Studios and hosted by Maria Garcia, Anything for Selena focuses on how the late Selena Quintanilla became an icon for Latino youth in the U.S. The episode “Big Butt Politics” analyzes the intersection of body politics, Latino culture, family and Selena’s “big butt.”
Sustaining members and donors at the $60/year level can choose from more than 2,000 exclusive KQED and PBS shows in our on-demand library with KQED Passport. To activate the KQED Passport benefit, please go to kqed.org/passporthelp, where you’ll find everything you need to start streaming. To change your membership amount, please contact Member Services at 415.553.2150 or at kqed.org/memberhelp.
The Passport library keeps growing with more and more streaming videos added each month. In addition to new programs such as All Creatures Great and Small on MASTERPIECE (get ready to binge the new season on January 8 and keep the tissue box handy!), we’re also excited for some old favorites to return for streaming. One of my personal favorites is Inspector Lewis, which is back for KQED Passport members with all eight seasons available now. You can stay in the world of Oxford mysteries for weeks since all eight seasons of Endeavour are available, too. You can find these shows and many, many more by clicking Shows on your main Passport page and sorting for Drama, or by searching for the program title.

How did hip-hop music quickly become an influential artistic genre and cultural movement? Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World, featuring rap icon Chuck D, is a four-part documentary series that recounts hip-hop history and unpacks how the art form became a vessel for political expression and social justice. As the co-founder of the prominent hip-hop group Public Enemy whose groundbreaking 1989 single “Fight the Power” became an anthem that called for unity against oppression, Chuck D’s music dispatches
lessons in Black history and consciousness while striving to dismantle racial constructs.
The docuseries weaves interconnected moments together through archival footage and intimate interviews with hip-hop luminaries including Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, Melle Mel, Fat Joe, Lupe Fiasco, Run DMC and others. Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World premieres on Tuesday, January 31, at 9pm on KQED 9 Sophie Kim, Editorial and Production Assistant
To commemorate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, KQED is launching: That’s My Word: The Influential, Underrecognized History of Bay Area Hip-Hop, a year-long multimedia project to explore the history of the Bay Area’s crucial contributions to the evolution of hip-hop. Though hip-hop has become the most dominant musical genre of this century, the Bay Area’s impact on the culture has largely been ignored — until now. Featuring articles, profiles and interviews with iconic Bay Area rap artists, playlists, an interactive timeline, videos, a podcast series and KQED Live events, check out bayareahiphop.com beginning in February 2023 to follow this project.
• Tupac Shakur lived in Marin City and attended Mt. Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley.
• Years before he became an international sensation with “Can’t Touch This” and “2 Legit
2 Quit,” Oakland rapper MC Hammer earned his nickname as an 11-year-old bat boy for the Oakland A’s.
• One-third of the iconic New York trio A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg spent his final years in Antioch before he passed away in 2016 at the age of 45.
Premieres February 8
This ambitious miniseries travels the globe to reveal the secrets of canids, the most successful carnivore on the planet. From recognizable foxes, wolves, African wild dogs and coyotes, to the lesser-known Japanese raccoon dog, New Guinea singing dog, dholes and dingoes, see the canids who’ve conquered every continent except Antarctica.
Thursday, January 12, at 8pm on KQED 9
This gripping new six-part series follows John River, a brilliant police officer who’s haunted by the murder victims whose secrets he must unlock. While River’s isolation helps him connect with victims and see the truth in ways his colleagues can’t, his long-held defenses are being eroded by love and loss.

Saturday, January 14, at 8pm on KQED 9 Con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) is a longtime resident of a luxurious coastal resort. He enjoys the fruits of his deceptions until Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) shows up. Benson’s own lowbrow tactics impinge on Jamieson’s work, so he resolves to get rid of him in this 1988 comedycrime film.
