VIRTUAL + IN-PERSON EVENTS Well Beings: Youth Resilience and Your Mental Health Post Pandemic

Tuesday, July 27, at 4:30pm After a year of managing life as a young person during a pandemic, how checked out are teens? Myles Bess (left) from KQED’s Above the Noise YouTube series for teens will host a panel of Bay Area youth and their advocates to address the need for mental health resources and solutions to get through the next year. For many teens — especially foster youth and others with limited support systems — the stress of readjusting to a range of social experiences, uncertainty about school and activities, mourning lost milestones and challenges accessing needed mental healthcare will require immense resilience. Through a range of lived experience and a data dive into statistics about the mental health toll of the recent extended isolation among young people and effective responses, the panel will highlight tools for helping teens to become their best advocates and to seek the support they need. Register at kqed.org/events.

NEWS + NOTES

Meet Alexis Madrigal, KQED’s New Forum Co-Host On June 21, acclaimed journalist and Oakland resident Alexis Madrigal will join Mina Kim as a co-host of Forum, KQED’s long-running public affairs radio program. Madrigal will fill Forum’s 9am slot vacated by Michael Krasny, who retired in February.

What attracted you to KQED and to this position? I really love member-supported radio and KQED has been a fixture in my life since I first moved to the Bay Area 17 years ago. This position is really special. It’s about helping the whole Bay Area hear itself. We’re building a community, keeping people informed and tackling difficult subjects together. I can’t think of any more important work to be doing right now. Is there a topic you’re itching to explore on Forum? There are so many! But I’ll focus on two here. Democracy — both the meaning of the political system and its mechanics — is going to be a regular feature on the show. Our multiracial democracy is shockingly young and has proven to be more tenuous than I could have ever imagined 10 years ago. And the other topic is “the internet.” I put it in quotes because I want us to break down that idea of some hegemonic technology into its parts. I want to talk with the people who build the services we use, explore the cultures that animate networked society and understand the ideologies of the firms that fund its expansion. And, of course, the intersection of democracy and the internet is an extremely interesting space. (continues on page 23)

Since 2017, Madrigal has served as a staff writer for The Atlantic, where he’s covered everything from the increasing intrusion of social media on civic life to the rise of mobile phones and its impact on crime rates. For the past year, he focused almost exclusively on The Atlantic’s pandemic coverage, which led him to co-found The Covid Tracking Project, a 400-person, volunteer-driven initiative to compile and publish data about the outbreak. The Project has been cited in work by dozens of major newsrooms and used by both the Trump and Biden administrations. He’s also reported for Fusion, Wired and Fresh Air, producing thousands of stories about everything from solar energy to children’s television. He’ll continue to serve as a contributing writer for The Atlantic. We checked in with him as he prepares to step up to the Forum mic on June 21. — Ellyn Hament and Peter Cavagnaro

RADIO

Listen in as Kelly Corrigan Wonders Kelly Corrigan has been called “the poet laureate of the ordinary” by the Huffington Post and the “voice of a generation” by Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine. She sums up her worldview simply: “People are struggling, make yourself useful.” And she does — on her television show, which you may have seen recently on PBS; in her books; and on Welcome to Kelly Corrigan Wonders. The radio show is for those of us who like to laugh while we think and find it useful to look closely at ourselves and our weird ways in the hope that knowing and feeling more will help us do more and be better. A former newspaper columnist and four-time bestselling author, Corrigan wonders about lots of stuff: Is knowing more always good? Can we trust our gut? How does change actually happen? She notes that she only books nice people who have a sense of humor and know things worth knowing. Each episode ends with Kelly’s shortlist of takeaways, appropriate for refrigerator doors, bulletin boards and notes to your children. Catch Kelly on Wednesday evenings at 8pm on KQED Public Radio. Rock ’n’ Roll Photograpy Is Here to Slay ICON: Music Through the Lens Hanging over my desk is a photograph from a New York City concert in the eighties. The faces of Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen are sharp, caught in mid-song. I can almost hear them singing. A powerful, iconic image can do that to me. What makes an image of musicians iconic? ICON: Music Through the Lens, a new sixpart series premiering Friday, July 16, at 9pm on KQED 9, tackles that question, taking you on a journey through the history and cultural impact of music photography. The series features interviews with the world’s most renowed

music photographers, musicians, gallery owners, journalists and social commentators. It also offers up striking rock-'n'-roll stories, photos, and a great soundtrack. Along the way, the series focuses in on studio portraits, record sleeves, magazine covers and live-on-stage shots. It also considers the future of rock photography, who’s in control of an image and how images will be seen. Subsequent episodes air on Friday nights. As the Rolling Stones sang, “I know, it’s only rock ’n’ roll," but it's a side you don’t often see, and "I like it, like it, yes, I do" — and I bet you’ll like it, too. —Ellyn Hament

Saturday, July 3, at 8pm on KQED 9 After his son is killed in a shooting at a fastfood restaurant and his marriage falls apart, an emotionally distant travel guide writer (William Hurt) must move forward. He stays with his siblings at their family home and meets a new woman, but there are complications. Expect charismatic dogs and a dose of quirkiness in this 1988 Academy Award-nominated film.

DID YOU KNOW? ROCK PHOTOGRAPHY • Baron Wolman shot photos for the first issue of Rolling Stone magazine in 1967 — for free. He covered a conference about the importance of rock music at Mills College, which, at the time, was focused on academic music study. • Bruce Talamon was usually the only Black, West Coast photographer consistently photographing R&B, soul and funk musicians in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

NEWS + NOTES (Alexis Madrigal, continued from page 3)

Meet Forum‘s Alexis Madrigal (continued from page 3) You co-led the Cover Tracking Project (CTP), a collaborative volunteer-run effort to track the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. What’s the most surprising fact you learned from it? I don’t know if it was a surprise, but it was a relief to find that hundreds of people could organize digitally to do something really amazing. We built a real community and that community had tremendous capacities. We could do things at the CTP that no newsroom or academic institution or government agency could. And yet we were just a bunch of people — a thrown-together group of 30 or so leaders and then 500 dedicated volunteers. But the breadth of our experience, the talent of our people and our culture of gratitude inspired the most remarkable contributions among folks as different as middle-aged math PhDs and high schoolers in Maryland. Do you have one or two quotes you find particularly compelling that guide you in your work or life? I haven’t lived my life by quotes so much. What tends to speak about and guide me are historical artifacts and the will of all living things to survive. When I look at a building or a brochure made by human hands 70 years ago, there’s something about it that reminds me that what we do in this life matters now and will matter long into the future. We’re building a society here, not just going through the motions of our days. And when I see a succulent rooting itself or a fern extending a new frond, I think about how change happens. Biology is slow, but it’s never stagnant. Things are happening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, two of my favorite activities are visiting archival collections and gardening. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you or your new role at KQED? I want to serve our community. That’s the only good reason to host a show like this. Michael Krasny certainly did so, and Mina is already doing it. I’m just honored to have the opportunity to do something I love for the place I love living. Finally, what was your go-to comfort food during the pandemic? I basically just scrambled eggs into anything that was in the fridge and then stuck the result into a tortilla with Tapatio [hot sauce] over the top. It’s a humble meal, but it’s always delicious and it uses up leftovers.
