NEWS + NOTES
Students Step up to the Mic in KQED’s Annual Youth Takeover Milpitas High School students came to KQED headquarters to record their Youth Takeover pieces. Photo by Amanda Vigil/KQED.
Bay Area students’ voices filled KQED’s broadcasts in April during our fifth annual Youth Takeover. Launched in 2018, the program encourages, honors and elevates the voices of young people by empowering them to tell us about the issues that impact them, their families and their communities. It also offers KQED listeners an authentic and insightful look into the ways the next generation sees our world, future and the challenges before us.
This unique, year-long program pairs high school students in classrooms from nearly every Bay Area county with KQED journalists, empowering kids to pitch, write and produce stories for KQED’s broadcast, podcast and online programming while their teachers receive curricular support and customized assistance from KQED. This year, the program expanded to include more working sessions with each of the 16 classrooms by inviting participants to create pieces in our recording studios, to participate in an audio workshop in
collaboration with PRX Podcast Garage and to engage with more than 50 KQED staff members at career panels. Though the live broadcasts are over, you can still hear Youth Takeover stories, including Clara talking about her experience with imposter syndrome on The California Report Magazine and John Henry High School students, who worked with Bay Curious on an episode about sneaker culture. Listen in at kqed.org/youthtakeover.
After three long academic years of learning during a pandemic, what should school be like? In the upcoming seventh season of the MindShift podcast series, which begins this month, hosts Ki Sung and Nimah Gobir use solutionsdriven storytelling to tackle relevant issues, including the role of surveillance technology when students take tests; the possibilities of having a positive middleschool experience; and how changing school start times may help the students and avoid teacher burn-out. Launched in 2016, MindShift enables teachers, parents and caregivers to discover solutions for raising our kids in
the modern era. A spinoff of the popular blog and email newsletter, the series offers listeners an inside look at how schools are developing solutions to meet students’ needs. Listeners hear from educators and experts who are creating pathways for students to flourish. You can find new episodes of MindShift every other Tuesday from July 19 to September 27. And, coming in November, MindShift will release monthly mini episodes featuring a notable teacher or researcher addressing education news events as they happen. You can find MindShift wherever you get your podcasts or at kqed.org/podcasts/mindshift.

Don't Miss This! Grantchester is one of those shows that always delivers; I’m clearing my calendar to binge the latest season when it premieres on July 10 at 9pm. The most recent season was a doozy with Reverend Will Davenport finding himself at odds with his own ideals when Leonard was caught up in a scandal, Geordie’s principles shaken, a distraught Mrs. Chapman and a defiant Cathy. The series picks up in the long, hot summer of 1959. With a new decade just around the corner, the question of what the future holds is on everyone's minds. But before the fifties roll into the swinging sixties, there are some crimes to solve and lifechanging decisions to be made that may change life in Grantchester forever. Members can see all of Season 7 on July 10, when all six episodes of the new season become available on KQED Passport. —Meredith Speight, Director, TV Programming

Explore America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston What do the outdoors mean to you? Our relationship with the outdoors is deeper and more important than you may think. This new travel and adventure series is hosted by Baratunde Thurston, New York Times bestselling author of How to Be Black and podcast creator and host of How to Citizen with Baratunde. He takes us on a journey across the United States to explore our country’s diverse regions and how the landscapes shape the way we work, play and interact with our environment. As Baratunde travels, he discovers a range of attitudes towards the outdoors; most importantly, a deeply held belief that being outside is essential to our wellbeing and that access to outdoor spaces is worth fighting for. In the series, you'll meet an ultra-marathoner, who runs in the brutal heat of summer; the mayor of a town of one; and an elder of the
Timbisha Shoshone tribe, who shows us that Death Valley is a place where life blooms. And from kayakers saving a polluted river to Black surfers claiming their place on the waves, Baratunde explores how Angelinos connect with the outdoors in Southern California — and much more. As climate change dictates where outdoor enthusiasts can go, and Americans debate how wild spaces can be made more accessible to all, America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston reveals a deeper understanding of our relationship with the natural world. The series is in six parts and premieres every Tuesday from 9 to 10pm between July 5 and August 9. The first episode of America Outdoors airs on Tuesday, July 5, at 9pm on KQED 9. —Sophie Kim, Editorial + Production Assistant

Henson may have been the first in the party to have arrived there. • After witnessing a massive oil spill that ravaged the San Francisco Bay in 1971, John Francis, nicknamed Planetwalker, swore off all motorized transportation and walked everywhere he went for 22 years. Five years into his on-foot revolt, he took a 17-year-long vow of silence.
