Take a Daily KQED

Radio Challenge and Win a Prize

Are you a fan of KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM? If so, how well do you know the news? Show your smarts by taking a daily, fresh challenge beginning in early July. Tune in at 5pm — on air or on KQED’s mobile app — to hear a question featuring conversations from your favorite KQED shows, including Morning Edition, Forum, Here & Now and All Things Considered. Then head to kqed.org/radionewsquiz and submit your answer. Correct responses give you a shot at the monthly grand prize. Listen in then show us what you know.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked KQED Podcasts Editor/Producer Chris Egusa for his recommendations.

STARTER EPISODE

“The End of Alameda County’s Eviction Moratorium”

The Bay, KQED’s local news podcast, tackles the thorny issue of a pandemic-era eviction moratorium ending. In conversation with host Ericka Cruz Guevarra, KQED Housing Reporter Vanessa Rancaño expertly guides us through the perspectives and politics of evictions restarting and what that means for people. Local, real and relevant — a great example of The Bay at its best.

STARTER EPISODE

“The Case”

This Land is a riveting narrative podcast told by Rebecca Nagle, journalist and citizen of the Cherokee Nation. It begins with a murder on Indigenous land in Oklahoma, but opens up to the questions of sovereignty that swirl around the case, as well as the history that brought us here. It follows the case to a 2020 Supreme Court decision that determined the future of five tribes and nearly half the land in Oklahoma.

STARTER EPISODE

“Myles Hochman”

Each week on the six-minute Sights and Sounds, the delightful Jenee Darden talks to local artists and gets their recommendations on what to do, see and hear around the Bay Area. I turn to it whenever I’m looking for something new to check out on the weekend. In this recent episode, aerialist Myles Hochman recommends an acrobatics show, a film festival and an ice cream parlor with uniquely delicious flavors.

Doc Martin, Season 9

If you’re like me and have been yearning to step back into the charming world of Portwenn, you don’t have to wait any longer. Martin Clunes is delightful as ever as Doc Martin, the quirky but loveable doctor for a picturesque Cornish village. This season, Martin has to deal with increased scrutiny from the General Medical Council following complaints about his approach to patients. Meanwhile, his wife Louisa adjusts to her new career in child counseling. For me, Doc Martin is the ultimate comfort watch and I’m thrilled to add Season 9 to my rotation. The newest season will premiere on broadcast on July 11, but Passport members get exclusive early access to all episodes starting July 1. —Emma

Music and Fireworks Light Up A Capitol Fourth

The July 4 holiday means different things to all of us. If observing it is something you do, there are plenty of ways to do it — from barbequing to watching fireworks to simply reflecting on the past or current state of our country. If you prefer a quiet, at-home kind of July 4 celebration listening to music and seeing spectacular fireworks from afar, you’ll want to catch A Capitol Fourth, America’s national Independence Day celebration.

This year marks the 43rd annual edition of A Capitol Fourth, which will be hosted by actor/television director/dancer and Broadway star Alfonso Ribeiro. Joining Ribeiro will be stars from various musical

genres. They include: Babyface; Belinda Carlisle; Boyz II Men; Chicago; Charles Esten; Renée Fleming; Maddie & Tae; the cast from Broadway’s The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise; the Northwell Health Nurse Choir of frontline workers; and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top Pops conductor Jack Everly. In addition to the fireworks, the event will also pay tribute to frontline workers, people in uniform and their families, and others.

You can catch the show on KQED 9 on July 4 at 8pm and 9:32pm, or stream it on Passport for a limited time from July 4 to July 18, 2023.

• John Adams, age 90, and Thomas Jefferson, age 82, both died on July 4, 1826, within five hours of each other on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence

• In an 1852 speech, Black American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer and statesman Frederick Douglass wrote the following about July 4: “What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.”

• The tradition of setting off fireworks on July 4 began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day. Ships' cannons fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies.

This five-part film set in Northern Ireland explores the decades-long conflict known as “The Troubles.” The series tells the story through intimate testimonies from ordinary men, women and children who were drawn — both willingly and unwillingly — into the bitter clashes that rocked the nation, and their struggles to hold onto a fragile peace today.

Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories with David Rubenstein: Stone Mountain

Tuesday, July 25, at 9pm on KQED 9

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE

Pride

Saturday, July 29, at 8pm on KQED 9

In 1970s Philadelphia, Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), who is driven by a love of competitive swimming, fixes up an abandoned pool building with the help of a janitor (Bernie Mac).
