At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month is by curating topical documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see LGBTQ+ Pride Month shows highlighted in this shade of blue You can find these programs on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED App.

“There’s a hidden side to everything,” or so say the authors of the 2005 book Freakonomics. A runaway nonfiction hit of the aughts, the book explored everything from what school teachers and sumo wrestlers have in common to how much parents actually matter for our development. In the subsequent radio program of the same title, co-author Stephen Dubner takes the "hidden side" premise and expands on it by considering “the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature.” Why do people who use social media say they wish it didn’t exist? How did a nation of immigrants become so divided over immigration? Are we living through the most revolutionary period in history? The questions — and often the answers — arrive each week, hidden in plain sight on your radio dial.
Freakonomics Radio plays on KQED on Saturdays at 3pm with an overnight repeat on Sundays at 2am. Listen on KQED 88.5 FM or on the KQED App. Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant
KQED’s MindShift podcast explores the future of learning and how we raise our kids. In the episode “Dear Math, You Are Terrible and Wonderful,” we meet a teacher who encourages students to name their feelings and share their past experiences — the highs and the lows — by writing letters to math. This activity launches a yearlong process of building a classroom culture where all students feel confident to share their ideas and problem-solving strategies. The episode features excerpts from “Dear Math” letters, insights from math education experts and reflections from two alumni about how the class shaped their mathematical identities.

D.I. Ray, Season 2
I was obsessed with Bend It Like Beckham as a teenager, which means I’ve been a huge fan of Paraminder Nagra for most of my life. So, when I saw that she was starring as the title role in this thrilling crime drama, I was especially excited. The show follows D.I. Ray (Nagra) as she navigates a predominantly white police force, tackling issues of racism and cultural identity while taking on high-stakes cases. In Season 2, we pick up two months after the tumultuous conclusion of Season 1, with D.I. Ray now thrust into a new investigation and a suspected gang turf war. Members with Passport can catch up on Season 1 now and binge all of Season 2 starting June 16, the night of its broadcast premiere.

Grantchester, Season 9

While the cast untangles mysteries within their seemingly picturesque village, they form a family of their own. Passport members can binge the whole season the night of the broadcast premiere on June 16

As scientists search for more sustainable food practices, our society has become increasingly familiar with “green” solutions, such as composting and mindfully reducing our carbon footprint. But are you acquainted with “blue” food technology?
In Hope in the Water, a new, groundbreaking docuseries from storytelling visionary David E. Kelley and four-time James Beard Award winner Chef Andrew Zimmern, researchers travel the globe to discover the breakthrough potential of water-derived animals, plants and algae (blue food technology) that could not only feed us, but help save our threatened seas and fresh waterways. The series highlights the stories of amazing innovators, aquafarmers and fishers who are working toward a sustainable future for the planet.
Headlined by celebrity activists Shailene Woodley, Martha Stewart, José Andrés and Baratunde Thurston, the documentary focuses on personal missions for environmental

change. It follows each activist to a different underworld that has been jeopardized by climate change, irresponsible fishing and exploitation, and habitat destruction. A stand-out of the series is the way it illustrates how today’s activism will shape tomorrow’s food culture. We learn that aquafarms, such as those for harvesting scallops, are becoming more appealing to fishermen who are struggling to access ocean food sources through traditional means. Aquafarms are becoming the future.
If aquafarms are indeed the future, then we must be embarking on a new world where farm-to-table cuisine begins in the ocean. It’s wild and wonderful to think about a vast resource filled with potential just beneath the surface. While this documentary was first titled Eating Up the Oceans, producers settled on Hope in the Water because…that’s exactly what it is. Be sure to catch the first episode on Wednesday, June 19, at 9pm on KQED 9 Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor
The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor Thursdays, June 13, 20 and 27, at 8pm on KQED 9 Full of unexpected bombshells, this documentary uncovers the “real” story of one of the greatest remaining dynasties in Europe. During Queen Elizabeth II’s seven-decade reign, she skillfully guided the royal family through high-profile crises such as attempted assassinations, kidnappings and deaths. In this docuseries, take a look at what it was really like inside the House of Windsor.
Eight Men Out Saturday, June 15, at 8pm on KQED 9
With an all-star cast, including John Cusack, Christopher Lloyd and D.B. Sweeney, Eight Men Out recounts the story of the 1919 World Series, when America’s pastime turned into a national scandal. Based on the book by Eliot Asinof, the film chronicles what happened when eight White Sox players accepted bribes to throw the series.
