KQED’s response to COVID-19

New and recommended

LETTER FROM KQED’S PRESIDENT I hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. We’re all taking the necessary steps to try and stop the spread of COVID-19, yet there continues to be great uncertainty about when the crisis will end and what our world will look like when it does. In a time of extraordinary uncertainty, we're advised to focus on what we can control. At KQED, that means a focus on serving the community. The need for factual, accurate, explanatory and contextual information emboldens us; it’s our core strength. We feel a responsibility to address the learning gap caused by school closures because educational programming is in our DNA. And we have a deep sense of accountability because your support makes it possible for us to do what we do. You’ve been loyal to us and I believe KQED is again playing a critical role as a trusted source of information and services for the Bay Area. The adaptability, resiliency and creative spirit of our staff is inspiring. They've filed stories from their basements and bedrooms. Our journalists have gone into the community to report on those most affected and vulnerable, and are providing comprehensive, trustworthy facts, and delivering comfort, inspiration and hope.

We’re also expanding our reach to help communities outside our region by working with NPR and partners. We retooled the second hour of Forum, our daily call-in show, to be the first statewide public radio program on the virus and its impacts. And our education unit has led the implementation of an in-home learning plan statewide to address school closures, including television programming on KQED Plus and KQED World aligned to state standards and free online resources (see page 3). And, for now, our events team is connecting people by streaming events and hosting virtual “watch parties” such as the Check, Please! Bay Area season premiere, which featured the San Francisco cast of Hamilton. We’re built for this moment. And we’ll persevere because we function as a community. We exist for the Bay Area and we’re part of this region. Ultimately, our work is about caring for one another. By keeping our focus on community service, we provide trust, calm and hope. Thank you for your support. We simply cannot deliver our programming and services without you. I’m grateful to be In service to you, and I’m proud to be part of KQED. Please take care and stay well. Sincerely,

Michael Isip President and Chief Executive Officer

KQED Supports Students Learning at Home with Free Online Educational Resources and Television Programming

KQED now dedicates its daytime weekday schedule on KQED Plus to California state standards-aligned educational programming provided by PBS SoCal and the Los Angeles Unified School District. The new 6am to 6pm schedule includes specific blocks of time for pre-K through 12th grade levels and covers English language arts, social studies, science and math. Additional educational programming for grades 6–12 also airs weekdays on KQED World from 9am–2pm. “Teachers across California are concerned for their students who will not have easy access to online learning at home," says Robin Mencher, KQED’s executive director of Education. “The new daily TV programming helps bridge the digital divide for these students and provide equitable access to learning for all students.” As part of this unprecedented collaboration with PBS SoCal / KCET and LAUSD, and in coordination with PBS stations across California, KQED has developed corresponding free digital content for at-home learning and support for teachers navigating this new

“These school closures bring unique challenges for teachers, parents and caregivers in how to keep teenagers and kids engaged and learning,” says KQED President and CEO Michael Isip. “As a communitybased public media station and as a hub for digital learning resources, KQED can play a critical role in helping create a learning environment with trusted and quality resources outside of the classroom and at home.”

May 4th Voices Radio Play Airs Wednesday, May 6, at 8pm The shots that rang out at Kent State University during a May 4, 1970, Vietnam War protest, killing four students and wounding nine, reverberate 50 years later. Many historians see the shootings as the moment America turned, finally and forcefully, against the war. This radio play features first-person narratives and reactions to the shootings using the May 4th Oral History Project’s transcripts. Author David Hassler assembled accounts from townspeople, students, protesters, faculty, National Guardsmen and others to provide diverse viewpoints from those affected. Tina Fey and other actors, all with a connection to Kent State, are directed by Joe Gunderman, national voice artist and WKSU’s senior producer, to bring eyewitness accounts to life.

Should We Forgive Student Debt? Intelligence Squared U.S. Airs Wednesday, May 13, at 8pm Facing growing discontent over the rising cost of higher education, many prominent Democrats — and some Republicans — are calling on Washington to cancel the approximately $1.6 trillion Americans currently owe in student loan debt. Supporters see debt forgiveness as a necessary step to safeguarding the nation’s financial future and combating education inequality. Others argue that this blanket policy would balloon the federal deficit, reward irresponsible borrowers and waste taxpayer money. Is it time for a student loan bailout?

PODCASTS

We asked Asal Ehsanipour, KQED podcasts reporter and producer for The California Report Magazine and Bay Curious, which podcasts she recommends. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“A History of Queer California”

The California Report Magazine tells in-depth stories about the people and places that make California unique. This episode, produced for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, takes an intersectional approach to the state’s early queer rights movement and the impact it continues to have today.

STARTER EPISODE

“Man Choubam (I am good)”

STARTER EPISODE

“The Congo We Listen To”

Rough Translation by NPR does a really extraordinary job of covering familiar conversations on a global scale. As a reporter, I love this episode because it’s a chilling cautionary tale of what Western media shouldn’t do when covering international stories.

Listen via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, the NPR One app, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

KQ E D . O R G • M AY 2 0 2 0

Unfictional, KCRW’s radio documentary and storytelling podcast, consistently offers offbeat, surprising stories by independent producers. I love that this episode about a fraught motherdaughter relationship is funny and touching while exploring the complexities of what it means to be a first-generation Iranian American Jew.

Experience Asian Americans, the Epic New Five-Part Documentary

M AY PICKS

What was — and is — the role of Asian Americans, one of the fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States, in shaping American history and identity? This new, five-part documentary series explores the initial wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s, identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the 20th century and the current refugee crises. It illuminates how a group of people — who were long excluded, faced racist policies and were considered outsiders — continue to persevere and remain resilient while pursuing the American Dream of opportunity and a better life.

DID YOU KNOW? • East Bay native Margaret “Maggie” Gee was one of only two Chinese American women in the WASP program during WWll. • According to a 2017 study, Daly City has the largest number of Asian Americans in the continental United States. • During the late 1800s, San Francisco enacted racist zoning laws that restricted where laundries, which were generally Chinese businesses, could operate.
