Don’t Miss This! The Hour

Don’t miss this Emmy award-winning and Golden Globenominated drama and espionage thriller that delves into the high-stakes world of television news. With the Suez Crisis brewing in the background, a small team of British journalists launches an hour-long investigative news show on British television called The Hour. Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Romola Garai (Emma) and Dominic West (The Affair) headline an all-star cast that includes Anna Chancellor (Ordeal by Innocence), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones). It is truly fun television that begs for bingeing so I’m excited that that Passport members get access to the whole series starting May 1 (broadcast viewers will be able to catch The Hour starting May 10 on KQED Plus). — Meredith Speight, Director of TV Programming The Hours; photo courtesy of © Kudos Film & Television Limited.

Go Back to School in Try Harder!, a New Doc About SF’s Lowell High School In a new documentary about San Francisco’s Lowell High School, director and producer Debbie Lum captures how being Asian American is not only the norm at Lowell — it’s celebrated. In Try Harder!, she pulls back the curtain on the college-application process and the intersection of class, race and opportunity by handing the mic to students, whose voices are often drowned out in headline-grabbing reports on the insanity of the college admissions process, and the stereotype of the Asian American academic identity. Lum follows seniors from the moment they apply to college to the moment they hear back, capturing a (school) year in the life of the students as the pressure intensifies to impress admissions officers at prestigious universities

with every aspect of their application, including their SAT scores, GPAs, extracurricular activities and racial identities. The film follows an outgoing, aspiring surgeon and son of Taiwanese and Chinese immigrants, who dances between classes; a young writer who, as a biracial African American person, is in the minority; parents who take different approaches to their children’s career paths and identities outside of academics; and teachers who want the best for their students. Follow this very diverse group as they navigate the external and internal pressures of growing up and figuring out their futures in Try Harder!, which airs on Monday, May 2, at 9pm on KQED 9. — Sophie Kim, Editorial + Production Assistant

Wednesday, May 11, at 9pm and 10pm on KQED 9 There’s evidence that an asteroid slammed into Earth, wiping out the dinosaurs, but no fossils of a dinosaur killed by the impact have been found until now at a remarkable dig site in North Dakota. Join Sir David Attenborough in this twopart episode as he guides us on a search for clues that could give us an unprecedented look into what happened to the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
