It’s a Podcast. It’s a Book. It’s Bay Curious!
Who was America’s first and only emperor? Why are there ships buried under San Francisco streets? With explorations into unique local legends, interesting landmarks and uncovered histories, KQED’s award-winning Bay Curious podcast is a fun, quirky guide to the secret stories of the Bay Area. Now it’s also a book. Bay Curious: Exploring the Hidden Stories of the San Francisco Bay Area includes popular episodes from the podcast and brand-new, never-before-heard stories plus fun illustrations and irresistible trivia sidebars. On KQED caught up with Bay Curious podcast host and author Olivia Allen-Price to get the inside scoop. —Ellyn Hament, Managing Editor
How did the Bay Curious podcast begin?
In 2017, I was an engagement producer in KQED’s newsroom and was looking for ways to bring the audience into our journalistic process. A program called Curious City at WBEZ, Chicago’s public media station, caught my attention. It invites listeners to ask questions that journalists answer. It was a simple and effective idea that was generating some fascinating stories. Curious City creator Jennifer Brandel encouraged us to try the idea in the Bay Area, and I was sold. We started Bay Curious as an occasional radio series. After several successful years, we launched it as a weekly podcast, and Bay Curious went from being my side project to a full-time job.
Which story or stories have you found the most fascinating?
There’s something amazing I learn in every story so it’s hard to choose, but a few of my favorites are featured in the book. I loved learning how rocky road, my favorite ice cream flavor, has roots in the Bay Area, and how Frank Lloyd Wright once designed a fantastical bridge that would have connected San Francisco to Oakland a few miles south of the Bay Bridge. Oh, and how humans share a lot of personality traits with the black crows that are common in the region. See, it’s hard for me to choose!
Any mysteries that still stump Bay Curious that you’d love to solve?
The first Bay Curious story we aired was about a wrecked car next to a popular hiking trail on Mount Tamalpais. We learned a lot about the car as we tried to get to the bottom of how it ended up on a trail so far from the road, but we never got the full story. I still think about it. If you know the answer, please contact me!
You can find the book at your favorite bookstore beginning May 2. Also on May 2, join us for a KQED Live launch party featuring storytelling, performances, food, interviews and more with Olivia and the team behind the book. Learn more about the book at kqed.org/baycuriousbook, and register for the event at kqed.org/live

A Prayer for Salmon
Completed in 1945, Shasta Dam, the country’s eighth largest dam, has served as a critical piece of California infrastructure for nearly eight decades. Its construction created Shasta Lake, the state’s largest reservoir. But Shasta Dam has been a source of pain and displacement for the Winnemem Wintu people.
A Prayer for Salmon tells the story of the Winnemem Wintu’s clash with the famous infrastructure site while weaving in narratives of climate change, Indigenous people’s rights and spirituality. The show comes to KQED through American Public Media but was produced in San Francisco by our friends at KALW.
A Prayer for Salmon plays on KQED on Wednesday, May 10, at 10pm with an overnight repeat Thursday at 1am. Listen on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM or on the KQED App. —Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant

STARTER EPISODE
“From the Soil: Protecting Sacred Land in the South Bay”
The Amah Mutsun Tribe is quick to tell you that it holds a spiritual connection to the land, specifically a parcel in the South Bay that developers are now trying to mine. This episode of KQED’s Rightnowish does a great job of highlighting the tribe’s plight while addressing the politics of preservation.
STARTER EPISODE
“Synthetic Remittance”
Although this is an unusually short episode for Darknet Diaries, it still packs all of the same thrilling punches: a compelling narration by the host Jack Rhysider; a fascinating story you’d probably never know unless you were obsessed with web culture; and a satisfying payoff that makes you eager to learn more.
STARTER EPISODE
“Silent Love. Candice Price x Keke Palmer”
This episode of Written Off is the definition of an emotionally gripping conversation. Candice, a formerly incarcerated youth, talks candidly about fighting the darkness tied to her past to reach the light of her creativity. The added bonus of hearing actress Keke Palmer read one of Candice’s original pieces (and Candice’s reaction) is incredible. [Content warning: self-harm and suicidal thoughts.]

One of my favorite things about Passport is the opportunity it brings to explore our history, sometimes by going deep into the public television archives. I was recently looking for something new to watch in the Passport library, searched for San Francisco and was delighted to see Horatio’s Drive pop up. This 2003 Ken Burns/Florentine Films doc tells the remarkable story of the first person to cross the United States by car. Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson began his journey in San Francisco; it’s a treat to see the opening scenes of our city in 1903. (Another bonus: Bay Area local Tom Hanks narrates as Jackson.) It was a great reminder that there are treasures everywhere you look when you explore the vast Passport library of content available to stream, taking you on adventures just like Horatio set out on in 1903. —

Discover the Music of Fanny This AAPI Heritage Month
I was nine years old when I was first introduced to classic rock music. I was sitting in the backseat of my mom’s old car playing around on my new iPod (my older sister imported her iTunes music library into it) when “Behind Blue Eyes” by The Who came on shuffle. That chance encounter with The Who completely changed my relationship with music forever.
In my pursuit to hear more of this genre and discover new bands, I became especially drawn to Janis Joplin because I thought it was awesome that she was a girl like me. Unfortunately, groups that included women of color weren’t part of my rock ‘n’ roll girlband education, so it was a great surprise when I learned about Fanny, the all-girl rock ‘n’ roll band founded by two Filipina American teenage sisters in Sacramento in the
1960s. As a Filipina American woman born and raised in California, I immediately identified with Fanny, especially after seeing their amazing archival footage in the new documentary Fanny: The Right to Rock. Despite being the first allfemale rock band to release an album on a major label (Warner/Reprise, 1970), touring with famed bands and amassing a dedicated fan base of music legends, Fanny’s groundbreaking impact in music was written out of history.
The bandmates have reunited 50 years later with a new record deal. See their storied history in Fanny: The Right to Rock, which airs on Monday, May 22, at 10pm on KQED 9, and for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, give Fanny their flowers. Sophie Kim, Editorial + Production Assistant
DID YOU KNOW? Women Who Rocked
Rosetta Tharpe is often called the godmother of rock ‘n’ roll. She blended folk and gospel with a swing rhythm that some believe was a precursor to rock ‘n’ roll. In 2018, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
• Suzi Quattro, whose sister was a Fanny band member, is considered to be the first female bass guitarist to become a major rocker. She also had a recurring role on the television show Happy Days.
• Many people believe that the Patti Smith Group’s 1974 “Hey Joe” and “Piss Factory” were the first-ever punk singles.
COMING IN JUNE
The Great American Recipe, Season 2
Premieres Monday, June 19, at 9pm on KQED 9
Get a second helping of The Great American Recipe when it returns in Season 2. The series serves up a fun, eight-part home chef cooking competition that blends food and family and highlights the amazing variety of American tastes and traditions.
Meet and Eat at Lee’s Garden
Tuesday, May 9, at 9pm on KQED 9
Filmmaker Lee recalls her family’s Chinese restaurant, Lee’s Garden, one of the first to open outside of Montreal’s Chinatown in the 1950s. Through interviews with former customers and families who owned other eateries, the film explores how these early places played an important role in the social history of Chinese and Jewish communities.
SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE
The Birdcage
Saturday, May 6, at 8pm on KQED 9
In this hilarious remake of the classic French farce La Cage aux Folles, engaged couple Val Goldman (Dan Futterman) and Barbara Keeley (Calista Flockhart) shakily introduce their future in-laws, who couldn’t be more different. Val’s father, Armand (Robin Williams), is a gay Miami drag club owner who pretends to be straight and attempts to hide his relationship with Albert (Nathan Lane), his life partner and the club’s flamboyant star attraction, to please Barbara's straight-laced father (Gene Hackman).

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE
West Side Story
Saturday, May 20, at 8pm on KQED 9
Musicals don’t get much better than this classic from 1961. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in 1950s New York City and features the escalating tension between rival street gangs, a love story and ultimately a devastating “rumble,” or fight. Leonard Bernstein’s music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics — plus stunning choreography and one of Rita Moreno’s finest musical moments — create a unforgettable, signalong-able film. (For fun, you may want to see the 2021 remake after watching this.)
