Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Every year we honor and uplift the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) during this heritage month. May commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the completion of the transcontinental railroad, largely built by Chinese immigrants, on May 10, 1869. Throughout the lineup this month, you’ll discover shows that feature the unique flavors of Asian cuisine (such as Season 6 of Lucky Chow premiering Tuesday, May 7, at 7pm on KQED 9) as well as films that chronicle the irrepressible spirit of trailblazers such as Corky Lee (see page 7) who refused to allow a skewed narrative to become history.
At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate AAPI Heritage Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see AAPI Heritage Month shows highlighted in this color. You can find these programs on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED App.

Moments in Time: 70 Years at KQED
KQED public media has been informing, inspiring and involving the San Francisco Bay Area for 70 years. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.
KQED’s first fundraising auction was held on June 28, 1958, during which the station raised $65,000. It was the first such auction among noncommercial stations. Early auction items included plane tickets to Tahiti, a year’s worth of diaper service and an anonymous donation of a 1,000-pound cow.

Science Friday
For many people, Fridays are all about planning for the weekend. For the team behind Science Friday, they are all about, well, science — and the latest news on the subject. Episodes generally begin with a recap of the most recent research, trends or concerns, with a particular focus on the environment, health and technology. From there, host Ira Flatow and company tackle everything from the believability of the desert world in the Dune films to how strong a shark’s sense of smell is (same as a fish, says one scientist featured back in February). It’s a show that offers a solid foundation of important news but never at the cost of losing its curiosity and wonder; it offers a reminder to marvel at the amazing world around us. That’s worth celebrating any day of the week. But perhaps even more so when you’re getting ready for the weekend.
Science Friday plays on KQED Fridays at 11am and Saturdays at 1am. Listen on KQED 88.5 FM or on the KQED App.

The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor
It seems like the British royal family is constantly in the news, and while there has definitely been a recent fever pitch, the family has been making headlines for as long as there have been headlines. This month, you can use your Passport membership to get an early look at a series coming to KQED 9 this summer — The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor. Told in present tense and filled with unexpected bombshells, the five-part series unveils the story of a family who has lived under intense public scrutiny their entire lives. Across the last seven decades, Queen Elizabeth II steered them through countless predicaments. With Elizabeth’s reign now over, The Real Crown looks back and captures the powerful real-life human drama of the greatest remaining dynasty in Europe. Narrated by Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton) and available to stream with KQED Passport starting May 1

Documentary Examines One Photographer’s Pursuit of Equal Representation
For 50 years, Chinese American photographer Corky Lee tirelessly documented the celebrations, struggles and daily lives of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Born and raised in Queens, NY, Lee taught himself photography by borrowing cameras. After seeing a textbook featuring an 1869 photograph that celebrated the completion of the transcontinental railroad by depicting only white laborers — despite the massive construction project having employed thousands of Chinese workers — Lee was inspired to use his camera as a “weapon against injustice.” He went on to produce an astonishing archive of nearly a million compelling photographs, propelling mainstream media to include AAPI culture in the visual record of American history.
On the day his 1975 photograph of Chinese American Peter Yew being beaten by NYPD officers was published in the New York Post, 20,000 people marched in protest of police brutality. In 1982, Vincent Chin, a young

Follow eight talented home cooks from across the nation as they compete for recipe domination, presenting their most memorable dishes every week. As they approach the finale, the top three contestants vie for the title with signature dishes that celebrate the multiculturalism of American food.
Chinese American man living in Detroit, MI, was killed at his own bachelor party by two men who believed the Japanese were stealing auto industry jobs and incorrectly believed Chin was Japanese. After the heinous hate crime transpired, Lee traveled to Detroit and photographed the protests that undeniably put on record what has largely been excluded from American history.
The impact of Lee’s work took on new urgency with the alarming rise in anti-Asian attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regrettably, Lee himself contracted COVID-19 and died on January 27, 2021, at 73 years old. It’s believed that he became infected with the virus while patrolling Chinatown with neighborhood watch groups who were protecting residents from the rise in anti-Asian violence.
