NEWS + NOTES

Be Part of KQED’s Next Chapter KQED is in the final phase of a major transformation. It’s a story that began more than a decade ago as we expanded from radio and television broadcasts to digital platforms. We envisioned a new era of serving you where, when and how you needed KQED in your life. To reach these goals, we launched Campaign 21, a strategic initiative to modernize our headquarters, expand public programs and educational services and invest in the reporters you rely on every day for trusted journalism on television, radio and digital platforms. Today, we’ve secured more than 95% of our financial goal.

But the building isn’t only about our service to the community. It’s a place to engage with the community for the community. We’ve reimagined our home to be open and accessible so that people can connect with our journalists, our stories and each other. When we open the doors, we’ll welcome neighbors to use our space and join in our work. In The Commons — one of the building’s most anticipated new features — we’ll host interactive events including town halls moderated by KQED journalists, screenings of national and local film documentaries plus conversations with the best talent from NPR and PBS. And most exciting, we’ll be able to capture and distribute many of these events on television, radio and online for those who can’t be with us in person. All of these improvements are the tools we use in service of what’s most important: ensuring you have the information you need to actively participate in a vigorous democracy. To learn more about Campaign 21 and how you can be part of the next chapter of our story, contact the team at 415.553.8497, or visit kqed.org/campaign21.

KQED Forum Host Michael Krasny Retires After a long and legendary career of nearly three decades on KQED Public Radio, Michael Krasny is retiring as host of Forum. Krasny joined KQED and Forum in 1993 after working for ABC Radio and local television. He began his career in the 1970s as host of a weekly program on KTIM FM, a Marin county rock station. He has a successful academic and literary career teaching English at San Francisco State University and has also taught at Stanford, USF and UCSF. Krasny is the author of several books, including Off Mike: A Memoir of Talk Radio and Literary Life, and Let There Be Laughter: A Treasury of Great Jewish Humor and What It All Means. And he's won many prestigious awards for his broadcasting, writing and scholarship. Krasny thanks “all of the listeners, guests and exceptional colleagues I’ve had the great fortune to encounter over the years as host of Forum.” He looks forward to spending time with his family, including his first grandchild, and focusing on writing and exploring other opportunities. His last day as host will be February 12. Please join us at 9am that day on KQED 88.5 FM and share your Forum memories with us on air.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Pendarvis Harshaw, host of KQED’s Rightnowish podcast and a columnist for KQED Arts & Culture, what he recommends. Here are his picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“Endless Winter: A Fresh Look at the Donner Party Saga”

KQED’s Bay Curious podcast team takes a great look at American history. It’s not only a chance to learn about the content, but also an opportunity to learn about storytelling mechanisms. The reveals, the suspense and the tone in which the story is told really works to drive the narrative home.

STARTER EPISODE

Louder Than a Riot looks at the intersection of hip-hop and the justice system. "The Day The Mixtape Died: DJ Drama" asks: How could someone who was putting one person’s lyrics over another’s beats face federal charges and have all his assets seized? The other episodes are anger-inducing because of racism or other systemic issues. This one is law enforcement going above and beyond — for no reason.

STARTER EPISODE

“The Zambian Space Program”

This Useless Information story is so wild and absurd it makes you question if they’re doing this to clown the person in the piece. Right before you’re ready to send an angry tweet to the producer and editor, they reveal that it was a ploy by the main character and American media fell for it. It makes you question what other ploys you’ve fallen for.

As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, Maya Angelou inspired generations with lyrical modern Black thought that pushed boundaries. American Masters — Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is a beautiful film that follows Dr. Angelou’s incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life through never-before-seen footage, rare archival photographs and videos and her own words. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South and her early performing career to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana and her many writing successes, explore hidden facets of her life, many during America’s most defining moments. You can catch this film, one of my favorite American Masters episodes, on KQED 9 on Friday, February 19. But, you don’t have to wait; you can watch it over and over again (at least until it expires from the library on February 22) on KQED Passport. Don’t miss the footage from the 1968 series Dr. Angelou wrote and produced for KQED: Blacks, Blues, Black! —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

Henry Louis Gates Jr. Turns His Lens on the Black Church in America If you’re like me, you’re a huge fan of Finding Your Roots, the PBS show hosted by historian Dr. Henry Louis Gates, who digs into celebrities’ genealogical roots and connects people with their families, with historical context, and with the stories of other people featured on the show. This February, Gates, a professor, the author or co-author of 24 books and the creator of 21 documentaries, takes on an entirely new topic. “I’ve spent my career telling stories about Black life, but there’s one I’ve never told. And it might be the most important one of all. It’s the remarkable history of the Black church,” he notes.

Best in Show

In Part 1, Gates explores the roots of African American religion beginning with the transAtlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices to endure the brutality of slavery until emancipation. Part 2 focuses on how the Black church expanded its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need, from the Jim Crow South to the heroic phase of the Civil Rights movement and the Black church’s role in the present. It’s a comprehensive and important story you may not know about. Be sure to tune in, beginning on February 16 and again on February 23, as he explores the power of faith, the importance of community and the sublime music and musicians. DID YOU KNOW? • The Third Baptist Church of San Francisco was founded in 1852 as the First Colored Baptist Church and was the first African American Baptist church west of the Rockies. Slavery was still in existence at the time. • Paul Robeson was one of several people who sang at San Francisco’s Third Baptist Church. Along with spirituals, he also performed classical music and the Jewish Kaddish. • Oakland’s First African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African American Church there, also served as a school for children of color because all other schools were for whites only. —Kirsten Voss

Step Inside Bay Area African Restaurants in Dishes of the Diaspora Premiering this month, KQED presents Dishes of the Diaspora, a new online series featuring African restaurants around the Bay Area. Come into the kitchen of restaurant owners, who share personal experiences, signature dishes and how they're persevering through the unprecedented challenges brought on by the pandemic. These short videos explore the vulnerability of opening a restaurant as an immigrant as well as the risks and rewards of introducing unique flavors into a Western community. In Episode 1, meet Oumar Diouf, chef/owner of restaurant and food truck The Damel in Oakland, whose journey from Senegal to Brazil and then Oakland sparked a mission to share the tastes of his home with the world. To see full episodes, which go live beginning February 3, go to kqed.org/dishesofthediaspora.
