RADIO

Goodbye ‘Says You’; Hello ‘Code Switch’ and ‘Life Kit’ Says You, a radio show familiar to many, ended production in September. We’re excited to be airing Code Switch and Life Kit in that same time slot (Sundays from 4pm to 5pm). Airing in the first part of the hour, Code Switch is hosted by journalists of color and features fearless, much-needed, head-on conversations about race exploring how race issues impact every part of society — from politics and pop culture to history, sports and more. Life Kit, airing in the second hour, guides you through spaces and feelings no one prepares you for — from finances to mental health, from workplace microaggressions to imposter syndrome and from relationships to parenting. The show features experts with real-world experience who share their knowledge because we all need a little help being human sometimes.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Marisol Medina-Cadena, producer of KQED’s Rightnowish podcast. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“A Sisterhood of Lowriding”

KQED’s Rightnowish podcast series launched three miniseries this year, including one that highlights culture keepers on wheels. This was my favorite episode to produce from our wheels series because it shines light on women making their mark on the male-dominated lowriding scene, plus it has a great oldies and funk soundtrack.

STARTER EPISODE

Before reggaeton became a global phenomenon, it evolved from Jamaican dancehall to Panamanian reggae sung in Spanish, to an underground scene in Puerto Rico and New York. The LOUD podcast series traces this history in Spanglish and gives credit where it’s due to the Black musicians and DJs who shaped the sound into what it is; this episode takes us to where it all started.

STARTER EPISODE

“Something Extra”

Anyone who has dealt with severe health issues knows how hard it can be to advocate for yourself in the medical system. Hearing, on the Bodies podcast series, how others process the emotional rollercoaster of trying to figure out what’s going on with their bodies makes this painstaking process feel less isolating. This episode explores what it means to face stigmas about sexually transmitted illnesses in order to live a life of pleasure and agency.

Land Girls, an utterly charming BBC period drama, follows the lives, loves, highs and lows of members of the Women's Land Army during World War II. As men fought on the battlefields, women from all walks of life worked the farms that fed the nation, doing their part to keep the home front running. In season one, we meet Joyce, Nancy, Annie and Bea, who each had very different reasons for joining the Land Army to help Britain dig for victory. Season one will be airing on KQED Plus in late November/early December during our fundraising drive, but Passport viewers will be able to see even more, and even sooner — all three seasons of this series will be available to stream on November 27. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

Antiques Roadshow: Best of 25

We Get Around: ‘Moving San Francisco’ Explores Our Transit Past, Present and Future I moved to San Francisco for college in the summer of 2015. Of course, I didn’t move just for college; I came for the city. I was fortunate to attend the University of San Francisco, where every fall and spring semester the administration would give students a Muni sticker to put on our school I.D. cards. This sticker granted unlimited rides around the city on any Muni vehicle: buses, light rail trains, cable cars and historic streetcars. When I look back at my fondest college memories, exploring the city on public transportation is always part of them.

Muni, BART, Gig Car, Zipcar, Uber, Lyft and more; there’s a whole laundry list of options for San Franciscans to choose from for traveling through the city. Moving San Francisco explores that, telling the remarkable stories of how our city moves. From the unlikely survival of the still-functioning cable cars to today’s tech disrupters envisioning new ways for transit, Moving San Francisco illuminates where we’ve been and offers a glimpse of where we’re headed. Moving San Francisco will be broadcast on Monday, November 22, at 9pm on KQED 9. — Sophie Kim, KQED Intern

DID YOU KNOW? SAN FRANCISCO TRANSPORTATION • In 1998, Fannie Mae Barnes became the first female, cable car “gripman” in the cable car system. • Originally, the plan was to connect BART to Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, but San Mateo and Marin withdrew. The plan also included BART trains going over the Golden Gate Bridge. • San Francisco cable cars are part of the official National Historic Landmarks — and a landmark that actually moves.

Fiddler on the Roof

Saturday, November 20, at 8pm on KQED 9 Chanukah comes early this year; what better time to watch the classic Fiddler on the Roof? This award-winning 1971 musical is about Tevye, a Jewish dairyman, and his family living in a traditional village in the Pale of Settlement under anti-Semitic oppression. The story focuses on the marriage of his three daughters and is about oppression, tradition and change in a challenging place and time. The music (think: Tradition!) is moving, and the dancing is superb. Photo courtesy of American Public Television.

The Great Escape Saturday, November 6, at 8pm on KQED 9 Based on a true story of a mass escape by British prisoners of war from a German POW camp, this is a classic 1963 American adventure film. Starring Steve McQueen, it's a fictionalized and very suspenseful version of the real event. Don’t miss the motorcycle chase and jump scene, considered to be one of the best stunts ever performed.
