New Food Series Kicks Up Comfort Foods

As the holidays hit, what’s better than comfort food — especially when it’s kicked up a notch? Dig into some drool-worthy deliciousness in Smackin’ Kitchen, our new six-episode series of one-minute, how-to recipe videos streaming on KQED Food’s YouTube and social channels.

The series features Oakland writer, photographer and recipe developer Stefani Renée, who inherited her love of cooking and storytelling from her granny Octavia. While her grandmother’s side of the family hails from the South, Stefani Renée grew up in the Bay Area. You can taste this melding of Southern flavors with California flair in Smackin’ Kitchen. Stefani is passionate about amplifying the work and expertise of BIPOC people in the food space and furthers this mission as a founding member of the Black food blogger hub Eat the Culture and as an advisory board member of Food Culture Collective.

As for the dishes she creates, we dare you not to drool over the sweet and spicy tang of vegetable chow chow relish in Smackin’ Kitchen’s gooey, grilled cheese with tomatillo chow chow or the pillowy brioche bread used for the praline French toast bake. Seasonal flavors take center stage with a spiced apple cake and a fall galette, stuffed full of sweet potato, collard greens and hot honey. Other recipes include skillet rice and beans with jalapeño cornbread topping and a spicy chicken salad sandwich prepared with crunchy veggies and Mississippi comeback sauce.

Subscribe to the KQED Food YouTube channel at youtube.com/kqedfood and watch episode shorts from Smackin’ Kitchen. You can also find the written recipes on our website at kqed.org/recipes

Listen in to Our Live Election Night Special

Newsrooms come alive during election season and KQED’s is no exception. It’s all hands on deck for the upcoming midterm elections to bring you the information and analyses you need to make an informed voting choice.

Need a last-minute read on the races, propositions and issues in advance of the midterm elections? We’ve got you covered with KQED’s Voter Guide, available in English and Spanish, at kqed.org/voterguide.

On November 8 (Election Day), NPR's coverage begins at 5pm on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM and on the KQED app. Tune in to KQED's live statewide Election Night Special at 8:20-8:40pm and at 9-11pm.

The special will feature analyses of national and local contests with a particular look at the race for governor, senator and attorney general. It will also look at California’s slew of important — if sometimes confusing — ballot propositions.

The Election Night Special will be hosted by KQED’s Marisa Lagos and Scott Shafer, familiar to listeners as the duo behind Political Breakdown. “The Breakdown,” as we like to call it at KQED, will also be all in on midterm analyses leading up to Election Day.

Carry It On This Native American Heritage Month

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month by honoring the revolutionary life and work of Cree activist, artist, educator, musician and singersongwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The profound contributions she’s made over six decades are chronicled in the new two-hour American Masters documentary Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On.

A vocal critic of racism, misogyny, political corruption, war mongering and profiteering, Sainte-Marie’s powerful activism and formidable truth-telling lyrics bluntly call out genocide and injustices committed by the United States. Sainte-Marie has written hundreds of songs dealing with individual responsibility, and she continually uses her platform to advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women and Indigenous and women’s rights. Early in her career, she addressed Native American land rights in

her song Now That the Buffalo's Gone; she protested the Vietnam War through her song Universal Soldier; foresaw the dangers of addiction; spoke out against opioids with her song Cod’ine; and differentiated herself from other female pop musicians at the time by sharing her then-radical views on romance in her song Until It’s Time for You to Go

The documentary includes never-before-seen archival material, new performance footage and interviews with now 81-year-old Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Taj Mahal and others. Tune in to view Buffy Sainte-Marie’s creative spirit and resilient integrity that remains restless and forward-looking in American Masters – Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On, which premieres on Tuesday, November 22, at 9pm on KQED 9 and the PBS Video App. — Sophie Kim, Editorial and Production Assistant

DID YOU KNOW? Buffy Sainte-Marie

• When approached to play a lead role in a 1968 episode of The Virginian, she demanded that all Indigenous roles be played by Indigenous peoples.

• During her five-year stint on Sesame Street, she was the first woman to breastfeed her child on national television.

• Her music disappeared from U.S. airwaves after she was blacklisted by the Johnson and Nixon administrations.

COMING IN DECEMBER

American Masters: Groucho & Cavett

Check the December issue for dates and times

Discover the lifelong friendship between legendary television personality Dick Cavett and the late comedian Groucho Marx, who was Cavett’s idol and mentor. Now 85 years old, Cavett reflects on their relationship, which is chronicled through various inter views (including one with George Burns) and archival footage of the iconic Marx brother.

Great Performances: Josh Groban’s Great Big Radio City Show

Friday, November 25, at 9pm on KQED 9

Experience world-renowned baritone Josh Groban as he performs songs from various genres alongside numerous special guests, including singers Cyndi Lauper and Denée Benton and New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck. Watch their performance on KQED 9 or through the PBS Video app the night of its broadcast premiere.

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE

The Shop Around the Corner

Saturday, November 5, at 8pm on KQED 9 This 1940 romcom follows Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan), coworkers at a store in Budapest. They constantly argue and disagree on almost everything but have one thing in common: They both have anonymous pen pals.
