Native American Heritage Month On the heels of Ken Burns’ The American Buffalo, which premiered in October, this November is Native American Heritage Month, a celebration of Indigenous cultures and an exploration of the traditions, people, food and art that shape them. Throughout this month, our programming features the next generation of narrative voices, perspectives and experiences. A must-see highlight is America ReFramed: Town Destroyer, debuting on Friday, November 17, at 8pm on KQED 9; it’s a documentary that examines how murals at a Bay Area high school launched a national debate over public art and historic memory. Presenting passionate arguments from both sides, the documentary asks questions about long-celebrated legacies and how our telling of history impacts today’s students. At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate Native American Heritage Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see Native American Heritage shows highlighted in purple. You can find these programs on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED App.
Indigenize the Plate Sunday, November 5, at 7pm on KQED 9 This vibrant documentary showcases how the Quechan community in Peru is utilizing resources to create traditional and culturally sustainable food. Awakening in Taos: The Mabel Dodge Luhan Story Sunday, November 12, at 11pm on KQED 9 Be sure to catch the incredible adventure of a trailblazing feminist 100 years ahead of her time. In the early 1900s, she moved from Greenwich Village, New York, to Taos, New Mexico, where she became a fierce champion for Native American rights.
Native America: Language Is Life Tuesday, November 14, at 9pm on KQED 9 Honoring a renewed effort to revitalize traditional languages, this episode celebrates the power of Native languages and the inspirational people who are saving them. Native Ball: Legacy of a Trailblazer Saturday, November 18, at 7:30pm on KQED 9 Follow the remarkable story of Malia Kipp, the only female Native American high schooler to earn a full-ride Division 1 basketball scholarship in 1992. Skindigenous: Kahnawake Tuesday, November 21, at 11:30pm on KQED 9 In Skindigenous, the art of the tattoo becomes a lens for exploring some of the planet’s oldest cultures, and in this episode, Kanentokon Hemlock, a representative from the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake, invites us to witness the first tattooing in a longhouse in roughly 300 years.

RADIO
The Moth Radio Hour There is an old magazine-writer’s adage that, with the right questions, you can write a feature story on just about anyone. Buried in this nugget of newsroom wisdom is the idea that regular people’s lives are as interesting, complicated and worthy of attention as politicians’ and celebrities’. That concept comes to life with spectacular clarity on The Moth Radio Hour. The show features true, personal stories curated from The Moth’s live storytelling events, which happen everywhere from Burlington, Vermont, to Louisville, Kentucky, to, of course, San Francisco, California. There’s no telling what kind of stories you might hear at a Moth event — a student who discovers the power of her voice; a pair of siblings who work their mother’s nerves; a frustrated love-seeker who finds solace in pasta — but it’s a safe bet that many potential magazine features will be among them. The Moth Radio Hour plays on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM on Saturdays at 8pm, with a repeat on Sundays at 11am. Listen live or on the KQED App. —Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant

STARTER EPISODE
“Microplastics Corrupted Our Planet. Here’s What We Can Do.”
Under any circumstance, tackling the overwhelming issue of microplastics is a tough job. I really like this episode of KQED's Forum because it breaks down the problem and addresses real ways that we can make change.
STARTER EPISODE
I love this intro episode of Articles of Interest that kicks off an entire season devoted to the history of Ivy League fashion. Host Avery Trufelman considers a trend forecaster’s 2018 prediction of what jeans would look like in 2022. Shocked at the “jeans of the future,” which look completely tame by today’s standards, Avery remarks how quickly tastes change and how predictable trends can be. STARTER EPISODE
“Forrest Gump with Jamelle Bouie”
Forrest Gump was a movie I watched about a thousand times on TV as a child without ever giving it a second thought. I never realized how problematic and insane it was until I listened to this two-and-a-half-hour conversation about it on Blank Check.

Doc Martin, Season 10
I’m sad to say goodbye to the lovable characters of Doc Martin in this 10th and final season, but it’s safe to say the series gives them all a loving send-off. Last season ended on a bittersweet note, with Louisa pregnant and Martin giving up his medical license. Now they must adjust to their new life: a new baby, Louisa’s new career as a child counselor and Martin no longer practicing medicine. But does he secretly wish to go back to being a doctor? Passport members get the amazing opportunity to binge the final season early, starting November 1 (and catch up on previous seasons as well!) — the broadcast premiere will be December 12 on KQED Plus. —Emma Casley, KQED TV Programming Associate

Salute to Service: A Veterans Day Celebration

Groundbreakers Celebrates the Women Who Shaped the Sports World For any athlete, the steep climb to the top of the sports world is a feat marked with fierce competition. In Groundbreakers, we hear from eight elite female athletes who share their personal stories of striving for glory. Hosted by tennis icon Billie Jean King, the film features conversations with flag football star Diana Flores; basketball legend Nancy Lieberman; Olympic gold-medal snowboarder Chloe Kim; FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer champion Julie Foudy; Olympic gold-medal gymnast Suni Lee; track and field world-record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee; and four-time tennis Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. Viewers are invited to learn the individual struggles and accomplishments that shaped women’s sports over the past 50 years.
From the fight for Title IX — the 1972 federal civil rights law that protects people from gender discrimination in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance — to personal acts of defiance that challenged conventional norms, the one-onone conversations showcase the generational mentorship and community building that has fueled progress in sports and society. Catch the broadcast premiere of Groundbreakers on Tuesday, November 21, at 8pm on KQED 9, or stream it on the KQED App. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor
