RADIO

Shows We Love: Freakonomics Radio Does your name determine your future? Why are people attracted to bad news? What creates happiness? How do you calculate the value of a life? Did any of these questions pique your interest? If yes, don’t miss Freakonomics Radio. This fascinating show began as a spinoff of the bestselling 2009 book of the same name written by economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen Dubner, who hosts the radio show. The book delved into seemingly random questions that ultimately revealed fascinating insights into human nature and its impacts on society and economics, which the authors argue is actually the “study of incentives.” When the book went on to sell millions of copies, Levitt and Dubner decided to continue the conversation in their weekly radio show, investigating even more questions at the intersection of socioeconomics, psychology, philosophy and culture through research and discussion with experts and others. They may not always have the answers, but the show will get you thinking and will challenge you to question what you think you know. Tune in to Freakonomics Radio on Saturdays at 3pm on KQED FM, with a rebroadcast the next morning at 2am.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked KQED Live Events Producer Sarah Rose Leonard. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“Aceptamos Bitcoin”: la nueva moneda de El Salvador

El Hilo is my favorite Spanish-language podcast for getting an in-depth look at current events. This episode explains how and why Bitcoin is now accepted in El Salvador. You read that right! The reporting in this episode is excellent, offering much-needed political context.

STARTER EPISODE

This KQED series about labor is defined by a strong point of view that is rooted in informed, thorough reporting and is laced with intricate sound design. The dive into labor history helps show where the fault lines in our systems came from. I don’t know how reporter Sam Harnett made our labor crisis entertaining, but I couldn’t stop listening.

STARTER EPISODE

MEN, Season 3, Episode 1: "Dick Move"

I thought Scene on Radio couldn’t top its excellent season exploring whiteness in America, but their third season on sexism, patriarchy and misogyny only confirmed that they create some of the best investigative reporting podcasts around. I always feel like I read a good book after I finish an episode; a favorite feeling.

Don’t Miss This At the end of Season 1, we left Julien Baptiste coping with the devastating events of his last case. Now he has to face his most complex mystery yet. In Hungary, a British ambassador’s family goes missing, and Baptiste must navigate through an untrustworthy Hungarian police force and international media interest to find them. Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) plays British Ambassador Emma Chambers and Tchéky Karyo returns as the beloved retired French detective. Don’t miss seeing how the mystery unravels. All six episodes from Season 2 will be available on KQED Passport beginning October 17, the night of its broadcast premiere. Can’t wait to reunite with Baptiste or want to see how the series started? TELEVISION OCTOBER PICK

Nature: My Garden of a Thousand Bees

American Masters’ Presents ‘Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It’ I first fell in love with Rita Moreno’s acting, singing and dancing when I saw her playing Anita in West Side Story. Sassy and smart as Maria’s best friend, she was — and still is — spectacularly talented. She won an Academy Award for that role, yet even after that the Hollywood studios offered her parts as stereotypical ethnic minorities. She faced rampant racism, sexism and sexual abuse, but fought back, working for Latinx representation across genres as a performer and activist.

theater, including her one-woman show Life Without Makeup at Berkeley Rep.

American Masters’ Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It explores her many achievements, but also looks at her lesserknown struggles, including her toxic relationship with Marlon Brando. Executive-produced by Norman Lear and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the doc includes interviews with Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg and others; clips of her iconic Throughout her 70-plus-year career, Moreno has roles and current work; and more. It airs on Tuesday, October 5, at 9pm on KQED 9, and appeared in more than 40 feature films, many will stream on KQED Passport the same day television shows (including a recent remake of One Day at a Time) and has performed in regional as broadcast. —Ellyn Hament

Wednesday, October 20, at 8pm on KQED 9 During the COVID-19 lockdown, a British wildlife cameraman turned his lens on his own urban landscape, exploring the bees in his garden. In the process, he discovered diverse species and bee personalities (yes, they have them) in his own backyard. It’s a lovely deeper look at the world around us at a time when it was impossible to travel. Photo courtesy of Martin Dohrn/©Passion Planet.

DID YOU KNOW? • Moreno was the first Latina actress to win an Academy Award for West Side Story.

COMING IN NOVEMBER

Great Performances: Coppélia! Check your November issue for dates and times Considered by some to be one of the greatest comic ballets of the 19th century, Coppélia! is the story of a romance between two villagers and the curious workings of their mad inventor neighbor: Dr. Coppelius. The Manchurian Candidate

Saturday, October 23, at 8pm on KQED 9 In this classic 1962 espionage film, Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) is a Korean War hero and former prisoner of war with a lethal secret: He’s been brainwashed by communist China. With one phone call, Shaw will become a deadly assassin — unless fellow veteran Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) can stop him. It’s a nail-biter all the way. Photo courtesy of American Public Television.

KQ E D.O RG • O CTO B E R 2 0 2 1

• Moreno was the third person ever to attain “PEGOT” status having won a Peabody (2019 — she was the first Latina to receive this award); an Emmy (1977, 1978); a Grammy (1972); an Oscar (1962) and a Tony (1975).
