KQED’s Two New Podcasts Bring Storytelling to Life
Telling evocative stories that both educate and entertain listeners is at the heart of what we do, so we were thrilled to announce KQED’s recent acquisition of the awardwinning audio productions Snap Judgment and Snap Judgment Presents Spooked
The programs add to KQED’s growing list of renowned podcasts and public radio shows. Hosted by Glynn Washington, Snap Judgment mixes real stories with music to produce cinematic, dramatic programs. The series’ musical brand of storytelling invites listeners to see the world through the eyes of others. Meanwhile, Spooked features true-life supernatural stories every week, told first-hand by people who can scarely believe they lived them. You can find both programs on the KQED app and all major listening platforms.
Plus, on Friday the 13th, Snap Judgment Presents Spooked Live is coming to the Fox Theater. It’s a perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit and experience storytelling at its best. Visit kqed.org/events for details.

Boo Curious: An Eerie Tour of the San Francisco Bay
KQED’s award-winning Bay Curious podcast is a show about questions and mysteries — and there are few times of year more prone to mystery than the weeks before Halloween. To mark the season, Bay Curious delves into some eerie, mysterious and down-right haunted places around the San Francisco Bay Area. Tune in for stories on the well-known but misunderstood Winchester Mystery House in San Jose; an estate in Oakland that horror fans love to see on the big screen; a slate of century-old murders that have imprinted themselves on the Bay Area landscape; and the black Victorian in San Francisco that gave birth to the Church of Satan. We’ll play the special in the afternoon, when there’s plenty of natural light to fill all those dark corners, and the time is right for carving jack-o’-lanterns.
Boo Curious plays on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM on Saturday, October 28, at 4pm. You can also catch it on the KQED app.

We asked KQED Podcasts Operations Intern Maha Sanad for her recommendations.
STARTER EPISODE
“Damian Stout-Lehman: California”
As someone who’s extremely nosy and loves to hear details about people's personal lives, I think KQED’s Perspectives is the perfect podcast. It’s my daily dose of hearing people's commentaries — young, old and inbetween — on all different aspects of life. You honestly can’t go wrong starting with any one of the bite-sized episodes!
STARTER EPISODE
“Episode 331: The Donner Party Part I — Salt of the Earth”
I’m a horror junkie, and I love almost anything related to true crime. If you’re ever in the mood to listen to three guys talk about all things spooky — cults, serial killers, cryptids and demons — then check out Last Podcast on the Left. It’s funny, it’s raunchy and the storytelling is always compelling.
STARTER EPISODE
“We Get Trashed For St. Paddy's Day — After Dark #98”
Sometimes I just need a funny and entertaining palate cleanser, and H3 Podcast has been my go-to. It’s a lighthearted comedy podcast that keeps me up to date on a lot of recent pop culture, social issues and political-adjacent topics. This podcast has drama, lore and endless laughs, and you’re sure to fall in love with both the hosts and the entire production crew.

World on Fire on MASTERPIECE
I am never happier about the Passport benefit than when it allows me to binge a captivating drama. We’ve been waiting for years to see what happens on World on Fire on MASTERPIECE, and the series is finally back, with Season 2 premiering October 15. Telling the story of World War II through the eyes of ordinary people and intrepid young heroes, Season 2 will take viewers from the war-torn streets of Britain to the depths of Nazi Germany and from the resistance within occupied France to the brutal sands of the North African desert — where troops struggle to adapt to a very different kind of combat. Jonah Hauer-King will reprise the role of Harry alongside Lesley Manville (Robina), Julia Brown (Lois) and Zofia Wichlacz (Kasia), and Passport members won’t have to stop with Episode 1 — all six episodes will be available to binge on the night of the premiere.

The American Buffalo: A Historical Portrait
Ken Burns’ newest documentary presents not only a beautiful and moving portrait of the American buffalo, it also explores the interconnected evolution of bison, humans and the Great Plains. In his characteristically stunning cinematic style, Burns traces 10,000 years of North American history to tell the story of the buffalo, from its origins to its demise — described in the film as “the largest destruction of animal life discoverable in modern world history” — to its rescue and restoration. The two-part, four-hour series also tells the story of the Indigenous people who lived alongside the buffalo for thousands of years, and it examines how the bison’s near extinction, and the cultural influences that perpetuated it, impacted Native tribes and their long-established way of life.
Ken Burns’ films often leave me reflective for days after I watch them, getting caught up
as I do in the many existential and societal questions raised by his documentaries. This one is no exception. And while I will be pondering the essence of humanity and the magnificence of the animal kingdom, I know at least one puzzle will not be lingering in my mind: Can American bison be called buffalo? As far as this documentary is concerned — and it is concerned specifically with the species bison from North America — the American bison is also known as the American buffalo. If it works for Ken Burns, it works for me.
Watch Part 1 on the night of the broadcast premiere, Monday, October 16, at 8pm on KQED 9. You’ll have another opportunity to watch it at 10pm, or you can stream it on Passport.
—Elyce Berrigan, Managing EditorDID YOU KNOW? The American Buffalo
• The American buffalo can jump a six-foot fence and hit a speed of 35 miles per hour.
• The largest land animal in the Western hemisphere, the American bison is also the official mammal of the United States.
• The buffalo’s go-to defense strategy is running, and at only seven minutes old, a young buffalo is able to run with the herd.
