PODCASTS

The show looks at the state of mental health crisis response, asks how it can be improved and offers an important update to the hotline. The federal government has transitioned the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline into an easy-to-remember, three-digit number: 988. “988: A Call for Crisis Care” airs on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM on Wednesday, September 28, at 10pm, and the following morning at 1am, or listen live on the KQED app. Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant

For stories with references to suicide or mental health crises, a common practice in broadcast journalism is to reference the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a hotline people can dial or text for help at any time. Regular listeners have probably heard this hotline mentioned on our airwaves. At the end of a story, the host might say: “If you or someone you know may be contemplating suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline,” followed by the number. But what actually happens when someone calls or texts that number? What do people expect when they report a mental health crisis? And what does crisis response look like? This September, in honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, Call to Mind, American Public Media’s initiative to foster new conversations about mental health, explores those questions in “988: A Call for Crisis Care.”

STARTER EPISODE “Episode 1: Warnings” I was glued to this summer’s January 6th committee hearings, and Will Be Wild’s eight-part narrative podcast series from the team behind Trump, Inc. was a great companion. This first episode is riveting and includes the backstory behind the Capitol rioter who was just sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

STARTER EPISODE “What the wheelie suitcase tells us about misogyny and innovation” There Are No Girls on the Internet (TANGOTI) explores how marginalized voices have been shaping the internet since its inception. In this episode, host Bridget Todd speaks to journalist Katrine Marçal about her book Mother of Invention: How Good Ideas Get Ignored in an Economy Built for Men. I was intrigued by the title of the episode—and it delivers!

La Otra Mirada Walter Presents has provided some fantastic foreign language dramas in recent years for KQED and PBS, with shows like Seaside Hotel, Before We Die, and Resistance. We are thrilled that the newest offering from Walter Presents is La Otra Mirada, a Spanish-language drama set in Seville in the 1920s. The series follows Teresa as she arrives at a school in Seville after fleeing scandal in Lisbon. She takes on a teaching role, leading her young students to truly think about what they want. We air the series on KQED 9 on Thursdays starting later this month, and repeats will also air on KQED Plus on Wednesday nights. But, I think you’ll be joining me in binging the entire season’s 13 episodes as soon as possible, which Passport members can do when it premieres on Sept. 15.

For me, the Holocaust isn't just history; it's part of my family history. Growing up, I was taught never to forget, and never to let that horror happen again to any group of people. But over time and across generations, knowledge of history can fade. In 2018, on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday, Scott Simon reflected on a study conducted by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which reported that 41 percent of Americans and 66 percent of millennials didn’t know about Auschwitz. Twenty-two percent of millennials said they hadn’t heard of the Holocaust. I suspect stats are worse now. And antisemitism has risen sharply.Forthose reasons and others, I'm grateful that Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein have created The U.S. and the Holocaust, a new threepart documentary. It examines the rise and fall of Nazism in the context of global antisemitism and racism, the eugenics movement in the U.S. and race laws in the South. It also explores questions that are still critical today, including: How does racism influence immigration policies? And how do governments and people respond to the rise of authoritarian states? This focus makes the docuseries even more relevant. The U.S. and the Holocaust airs on September 18, 19 and 20 at 8pm on KQED 9. Given the waning knowledge of Holocaust history and the issues facing the world today, it's an important, engaging watch. —Ellyn Hament, Managing Editor Support for KQED and the local broadcast of The U.S. and the Holocaust comes from Koret Foundation, Frank Residences, and Berkeley Rep.
