Possible

A new show hosted by Reid Hoffman and Aria Finger, Possible sketches out the brightest version of the future — and considers what it will take for us to get there. Most of all, it asks: What if, in the future, everything goes in humanity's favor? Possible features interviews with visionaries from a variety of fields such as climate science, media, criminal justice and more. Guests include Trevor Noah, Sam Altman, Ariel Ekblaw and Janette-Sadik Khan. Each episode also features another kind of guest: GPT-4, OpenAI’s latest and most powerful language model. GPT-4 generates a companion story for each episode, which serves as a jumping-off point for a hopeful, speculative discussion about what humanity could possibly get right if we leverage technology — and our collective effort — effectively.

Possible plays on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM on Sundays at 2pm starting August 27. You can also catch it on the KQED app.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now?

We asked KQED MindShift Producer and Editor Kara Newhouse for her recommendations.

STARTER EPISODE

“What's Going on With Pro Women's Sports in the Bay Area?”

In a recent episode of Bay Curious, Olivia Allen-Price explored the question: Where are the Bay Area’s professional women’s sports teams? Spoiler alert: We've had pro teams in the past, and another is on the way. Check out this episode to learn about Bay FC, the newest team in the National Women’s Soccer League, kicking off next spring.

STARTER EPISODE “YGYSYDG”

Nora McInerny’s new podcast, It’s Going to Be OK, highlights small moments of joy. Or, if not joy, moments when the world isn’t on fire. It's like a gratitude journal with lower expectations. In this episode, Nora celebrates her son’s self-soothing nighttime affirmation, something he says he learned from a pancake named Jeff.

STARTER EPISODE

“Pink Card, Episode 3: White Scarves”

In this documentary from 30 for 30, journalist Shima Oliaee examines Iranian women's decades-long fight to watch men's soccer in the country's stadiums. You’ll hear from generations of women who risked their lives to defy gendered stadium restrictions. It’s a moving reminder that sports represent so much more than a game.

I wanted to dedicate all my choices this month to the fantastic Walter’s Choice dramas that have been coming to Passport. Walter’s Choice programs are a carefully curated selection of international dramas available exclusively to Passport members. If you’ve run out of English-language shows to binge, you’ll definitely find your new favorite program on Walter’s Choice. My most-recent top pick is Sisi: Austrian Empress — a lush historical drama (with gorgeous costumes!) about the rise of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. I especially recommend it to fans of Marie Antoinette, which came to Passport earlier this year. All of Sisi: Austrian Empress is available on Passport now, and you can find all the amazing Walter’s Choice programs currently available at video.kqed.org/franchise/walter-presents.

Four Flavorful Series Dish Fresh, New Seasons

It is a thrill to introduce this September’s foodthemed issue of On KQED in celebration of Latinx Heritage Month. As an enthusiast of all things marinated in achiote and onion, doused with melted cheese and rolled in fresh tortillas, I’m delighted that this vibrant and colorful issue serves as my first offering as managing editor.

This month’s delectable programs include a variety of dishes ranging from fresh seafood tacos to sugar-crusted Colombian empanadas. Be sure to treat yourself to the rich flavors in Check, Please! Bay Area (starting September 7 at 7:30pm on KQED 9); Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Television (starting September 12 at 7:30pm on KQED 9); Cook’s Country (starting September 14 at 7pm on KQED 9); and Pati’s Mexican Table (starting

September 19 at 7pm on KQED 9), all featuring delicious, authentic Latinx meals with timehonored spice and succulence.

Along with these savory new seasons, September also brings the debut of The Last Mambo (September 29 at 8pm on KQED 9), a documentary exploring the Bay Area’s salsa and Latin jazz music and dance community and the Hispanic Heritage Awards (September 29 at 9pm on KQED 9), an evening of performances by some of the country’s most beloved Hispanic artists and visionaries. I hope this multisensory lineup has you dining and dancing to the beat of Latinx culture.

American Experience: The Busing Battleground

Monday, September 11, at 9pm on KQED 9

On September 12, 1974, Black and white students were bused for the first time between Boston neighborhoods to comply with a federal court desegregation order. Using eyewitness accounts, oral histories and rare news footage, this documentary examines the volatile effort to end school segregation and the decades-long struggle for educational equity.

DID YOU KNOW? The Controversial History of the Mission-Style Burrito

• While the characteristics of a Mission-style burrito are well established (its gargantuan size, pressed flour tortilla and hearty helping of seasoned rice), the origins of this San Francisco staple are up for debate.

Longtime local favorite Taqueria La Cumbre confidently promotes that it founded the super burrito on September 29, 1969, a claim it features on its storefront.

• Equally popular El Faro insists they created it eight years prior, on September 26, 1961, when they combined two smaller tortillas into one giant-sized meal.

COMING IN OCTOBER

The American Buffalo

Check your October issue for dates and times

The American Buffalo, a new two-part, four-hour series from Ken Burns takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history. Trace the animal’s evolution, their significance to the Great Plains and their near demise and relationship to the Indigenous People of North America.

The Apartment

Saturday, September 16, at 8pm on KQED 9

This 1960 romcom follows C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), an insurance worker who lets company bosses use his Upper West Side apartment for extramarital affairs. When his manager, Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), uses the apartment for trysts with the woman Baxter cares for, Baxter must choose between career advancement and love.
