Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month: Culture and Cuisine

A time of year when we honor both culture and cuisine, September begins our celebration of Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) and it marks the kickoff for new seasons of our most popular cooking shows. As part of our programming lineup, you will see special documentaries, series and shows that put a spotlight on Latinx culture. From The Latinx Photography Project (Monday, September 16, at 11pm on KQED 9) to Singing Our Way to Freedom (Thursday, September 19, at 11pm on KQED Plus), September’s programming uplifts the accomplishments, contributions and history of Latinx people. We’re also excited for the premiere of Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Television, Season 8 (Wednesday, September 11, at 7:30pm on KQED 9), which

includes a fishing trip focused on the art of Mexican seafood and a preparation of slow-roasted snapper with chili and lime. On Monday, September 16, at 9pm on KQED 9, learn the secrets of a perfect margarita when America’s Test Kitchen Celebrates 25 Years. Then, Pati’s Mexican Table, Season 13, debuts on Tuesday, September 17, at 7pm on KQED 9, with new episodes that showcase heirloom pecans grown on a Chihuahuan farm and chile con queso served on soft flour tortillas. The festive flavors continue with Cook’s Country, Season 17, (Thursday, September 26, at 7pm on KQED 9) where crispy tacos take center stage among other tasty dishes. We hope you tune in for (and try out) some of these sumptuous offerings!

Moments in Time: 70 Years at KQED

KQED public media has been informing, inspiring and involving the San Francisco Bay Area for 70 years. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.

Newsroom of the Air premiered on KQED Public Television in 1968, making KQED the first regional public television station to have its own nightly news program. The program was launched in response to a San Francisco newspaper strike and featured local editors and journalists. The show is a forerunner to PBS News Hour, which continues to provide national PBS audiences with trustworthy news and analysis.

Charming British Mystery Series Comes to KQED

The British mystery series Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators comes to KQED this month. And if you’re like me, then your first thought when reading the title was that the great poet William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway, of medieval 16th-century Stratfordupon-Avon, were resurrected in the multiverse as private investigators. Make no mistake: The names of the main characters obviously refer to William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway themselves. But this is no parallel universe, just an allusion to the greats.

In present-day Stratford-upon-Avon, Luella Shakespeare (Jo Joyner) and Frank Hathaway (Mark Benton) are an unlikely duo. Initially, they’re thrown together because Luella decides to marry a man she just met online, and as a safeguard, hires Frank to do a background check on her new fiancé. Frank is no Romeo; he’s a debt-ridden ex-detective. But he and his young assistant Sebastian Brudenell (Patrick Walshe McBride) do discover that Luella’s fiancé is a con man. However, even after they confront Luella with the truth, her scammer fiancé manages to reassure her, and the wedding still occurs. In what seems to be an act of God, her new husband is killed at the reception, but Luella is then suspected of murder! She teams up with Frank and Sebastian to uncover what happened and to clear her name, and together they prove Luella’s innocence. In the aftermath, Luella buys herself into Frank’s business, forming a partnership. Despite their constant disagreements, the pair make a good team in the action-packed, fun-filled drama as they investigate extramarital affairs, murderous magicians, abducted au pairs and more. Watch the broadcast premiere on Thursday, September 12, at 8pm on KQED 9, or watch the livestream on the KQED App.

MOONFLOWER MURDERS ON MASTERPIECE

Magpie Murders was one of my favorite programs last year, so getting to dive into the new spin-off series Moonflower Murders was a true treat for me. After leaving publishing behind to live in Crete, Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) finds herself sucked into another mystery. This time, it involves an eight-year-old murder at a countryside hotel and the disappearance of a woman who believes the wrong man was arrested. With help from Alan Conway’s books and the always-welcome appearance of Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan), it’s up to Susan to crack the case. Passport members can binge all eight episodes of Moonflower Murders the night of its broadcast premiere on September 15. —Emma Casley, KQED TV Programming Manager

Van der Valk, Season 4

The Dutch detective and his team face high-profile cases that explore Amsterdam’s cultural contrasts. Passport members can binge the whole season on September 15.

Carmen Curlers, Season 2

Why did the electric hair-curler soar to popularity in the 1960s? The new season is available to Passport members on September 27 In Danish with English subtitles.

American Experience: Citizen Hearst, Parts 1 and 2

Expires September 26! Trace the rise of William Randolph Hearst, the man who built the nation’s largest media empire by the 1930s.

Reconnecting Roots, Season 4

Don’t miss an exciting new season of the show that explores stories of America through music and history. Available with Passport on September 1.
