In October 2010, in celebration of 25 amazing years, the landmark musical Les Misérables marked the momentous occasion with two magnificent sold-out performances at London’s O2 Arena and live relays to cinemas around the world, where audiences stood, clapped, cried, and cheered. This live recording of the extraordinary event presents an awe-inspiring spectacle, with a phenomenal international cast of more than 300 actors and musicians. Stars include leading tenor and best-selling recording artist Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, pop star Nick Jonas as Marius, comic actor and writer Matt Lucas as Thénardier, Lea Salonga as Fantine, Jenny Galloway as Madame Thénardier, Camilla Kerslake as Cosette as well as the casts of the original production at the Queen’s Theatre, the new 25th-anniversary production at the Barbican, London, and members of the original 1985 London cast.

When Les Misérables celebrated its 21st London birthday on October 8, 2006, it became the world’s longest-running musical, surpassing the record previously held by Cats in London’s West End. In January 2010, the West End production broke another record by celebrating a historic 10,000 performances. Seen by more than 56 million people worldwide, in 42 countries and in 21 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly

one of the world’s most popular musicals ever written, with new productions continually opening around the globe. There have been 36 cast recordings of Les Misérables, including the soon-to be-released live recording of the new 25th anniversary production. Sunday, March 6, at 7pm on KQED 9.

Welcome New Board Members Thank you for being a supporter of KQED and public media. It is my great pleasure to introduce four new members to KQED Public Media’s Board. Having a strong Board of Directors is one of the ways we show accountability to the public and ensure our organization is fiscally sound, has appropriate policies, and is poised for success today and in the future. The nominating committee, composed of

We continue our profiles of new members of KQED Public Media’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP). A complete list of 2011 members is available online at kqed.org/ board. This month we asked Velma Landers our get-to-know-you questions. Why did you want to be part of CAP? Because, in part, it affords me the opportunity to introduce my community to KQED. What special qualities/skills/ideas do you bring to the group? Vision, courage, compassion, and the ability to bring a community together that would otherwise be invisible.

What public media program(s) do you try not to miss? Programs that feature current events, education, and the arts. Who is your favorite Muppet? Miss Piggy. Finish the sentence: “KQED is . . .” bold enough to forge into areas that are unfamiliar or unpopular and is always looking for ways to provide needed information to underserved communities.

Dr. Seuss believed that children could better learn to read if they had books that they were actually interested in reading. His contribution was The Cat in the Hat, a book that has now taught generations to read. Read Across America Day honors this literary gift by celebrating reading annually on his birthday, March 2.

KQED Education also held a series of mini-clinics so conference attendees could experience firsthand how media and new media tools can enhance teaching and engage learners. KQED Education staff demonstrated how smartphones can promote locationbased learning; educational applications of touch-screen technologies; how to build iTunes playlists of audio, video, and lesson plans as part of curriculum development; and how to utilize blogs to encourage peer-to-peer learning. The dramatic cliffs of Half Moon Bay were the backdrop for a gathering of innovators and change-makers at the Big Ideas Fest, organized by ISKME, the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education. Luminaries in the field, including Dr. Sugata Mitra, Salman Khan, Christopher Rush, and Curtis Wong, spoke to educators and school administrators about their efforts in pushing for innovations in education. MindShift—KQED’s website about the future of learning—and KQED Education co-hosted the Media Lounge, where attendees came to learn, network, work in groups, and relax. Some of the prominent speakers were interviewed by KQED about their thoughts on the ideal schoolday of the future, and those interviews are posted at http://mindshift.kqed.org.

First Person KQED Public Radio’s 24-hour international, national, regional, and local news and information service is available on frequencies 88.5 FM in San Francisco, 89.3 FM in Sacramento (KQEI), 88.3 FM in Santa Rosa, and 88.1 FM in Martinez. It is also available on Comcast digital cable channel 960 and live online at kqed.org.

Award-winning San Francisco architect Craig Hartman was a guest on Forum “First Person.” Forum airs weekdays from 9 to 11am on KQED Public Radio. Listen online or search the archives at kqed.org/forum.

Introducing Forum’s new interview series Forum, KQED Public Radio’s live weekday call-in program, regularly presents insightful conversations with authors, journalists, and experts. But not every interesting comment from a caller is broadcast. “While researching programs and listening to our callers, we regularly hear compelling personal anecdotes or biographical details which don’t necessarily fit in to the topic of the segment,” explains Senior Editor Dan Zoll. “We wanted a way to feature them.” The result is Forum “First Person,” an occasional interview series that debuted at the end of 2010, spotlighting community leaders, unsung heroes, worldclass innovators, and other notable characters who make Northern California unique. “We are constantly inspired by both the depth and breadth of guest expertise available to us here and by our local audience, which has to be one of the most diverse, intelligent, and engaged in the country,” Zoll says. “We’re also inspired by the beauty, diversity, and history of our region, and we’re always seeking ways to hold a mirror up to Northern California and better convey a sense of place.” Dan recently answered a few questions about “First Person” and explained how you can recommend interview subjects. How does “First Person” differ from a typical Forum segment? We often have people on as guests when they write a book or are somehow involved with a news story or cultural trend or event. However, we wanted to carve out a place for locals to come in and tell their story, whether or not there is a news “hook” for it.

For example, a recent “First Person” featured award-winning architect Craig Hartman, who’s involved with the Treasure Island redevelopment plan. He’s someone we’d have tapped for a piece about Treasure Island, but as a “First Person” segment, we were able to step back and take an hour to talk with him about his whole body of work, which includes such high-profile projects as SFO’s International Terminal, the St. Regis Hotel, and the new cathedral on Oakland’s Lake Merritt. Who makes a good interview subject? We are looking for people who are local and have a compelling story. People involved in areas such as business, the arts, science, technology, sports, and the nonprofit world—from Berkeley Rep artistic director Tony Taccone to Nobel Prize–winning scientist Elizabeth Blackburn to a local corner-store owner, cable car driver or neighborhood activist. How do listeners suggest a potential interview subject for Forum “First Person”? We welcome all suggestions. Please email them to forum@kqed.org or call our listener feedback line: 415.553.3300.
