The Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera first opened in 1986 at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, by Gaston Leroux. Set against the glamor and spectacle of the Paris Opera House, the tale is of the horribly disfigured Phantom, who was once a promising musician and who now terrorizes the opera company. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the Phantom is drawn to the beautiful ingenue Christine Daaé. He begins coaching her secretly and a tragic romance unfolds between the unlikely pair.

The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall, a fully-staged, lavish 25th anniversary mounting of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running Broadway and West End extravaganza, comes to Great Performances this month. To mark the musical’s silver anniversary, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh presented The Phantom of the Opera in the Victorian splendor of London’s Royal Albert Hall. International audiences were invited to join the 2011 celebration when the evening was transmitted live to cinemas worldwide. This dazzling restaging of the original production re-creates the jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects of the original, set to Lloyd Webber’s haunting score. The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall stars Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom and Sierra Boggess as Christine. They are joined by Barry James as Monsieur Firmin, Gareth Snook as Monsieur André, Liz Robertson as Madame Giry and Wynne Evans as Piangi, together with a cast and orchestra of more than 200, including special guest appearances by the original Phantom and Christine, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Illustrious past Phantoms Peter Jöback, John OwenJones, Anthony Warlow and Colm Wilkinson join forces for a powerful “Music of the Night,” all introduced by a beaming Lloyd Webber.

In the next few issues of On Q, you’ll learn a little something about the six new members of KQED’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP). But first, an introduction from CAP’s 2012 chair.

Yolanda Garcia C ity of residence

San Francisco

Why did you want to become a CAP member, and what would you like to accomplish during your tenure? I was asked to consider participating because of my interest in Latino issues, and I decided to apply so I could help give voice to the under represented and disadvantaged communities that I serve. I would like to contribute my content expertise and knowledge about

community services to CAP. I believe in the power of media, public television and radio specifically, to influence attitudes and perspectives about our diverse communities.

Why did you want to become a CAP member, and what would you like to accomplish during your tenure? My aim as a CAP member is to bridge the gap of accessibility and communication between disenfranchised communities and KQED, particularly among Mission district youth. I hope to broaden my community relations in and outside San Francisco, with the ultimate goal of interconnecting with and recruiting new KQED audiences through community partnerships.

KQED Public Radio

As the incoming chair of KQED’s Community Advisory Panel, I’m excited to share our work with KQED members. CAP consists of 24 individuals representing the broad diversity of KQED’s viewership, listeners and members, stretching from Sonoma County to Monterey County and from San Francisco to the East Bay. The members of CAP actively participate in recruiting and selecting KQED’s Local Heroes and we represent the station at community events throughout the year. Perhaps most important, we promote KQED’s content to the broader community, including at events co-hosted by diverse organizations throughout Northern California. Volunteering on CAP has made me appreciate even more all the hard work, dedication and commitment it takes to produce the amazing programming you find on KQED.

Coordinating and directing their work through 16 weekday newscasts is senior news editor Julia McEvoy. We pulled Julia away from the newsdesk to ask her some question about KQED News.

What sets KQED apart from other Bay Area news outlets? A combination of things sets us apart. Our international coverage is strong, thanks to NPR and The World; our state coverage is top-notch because of the strong reporting work coming out of The California Report; and our Bay Area coverage is added to the mix to give the news consumer a complete package. An amazing amount of work goes into producing a two-minute radio story. How many people are involved in getting a newscast on the air? Our core radio and online news team is 11 people. KQED also has state and special-project reporters who focus on areas of health, science, education, politics, immigration and climate. These reporters’ contributions help enrich our newscasts. We also partner with local community news organizations to bring street-level reporting, and we partner with investigative operations such as California Watch to dig in deeper on issues. And, of course, nothing would get on the air and online without a dedicated engineering and IT staff. So, yeah, a lot of people are behind the scenes getting even a short radio story to our listeners.

6

What’s a typical work day like? I’m usually home squinting at local TV news programs at 5am, trying not to wake up everyone else in my house. I’m basically getting a quick take on what is breaking news and trying to become coherent.

When I get into the station, I scan news sources, national and local, to give me a better handle on the day’s important stories. I start working with the morning anchor to go over the news stories our team has left us to start the day and start targeting the stories our team will work on that afternoon. The news team meets several times a day to make sure reporters are where they need to be and are able to get the news back to us in time for the newscasts. The great thing about working in a newsroom is that you’re constantly in action as part of a team effort. What’s your background in radio? I started at WBEZ, Chicago public radio, went to reporting for NPR in Miami, then moved into documentary work while I was raising my three kids. I found I liked editing and then got a great gig as executive producer of an exceptional multi-media public affairs series called Chicago Matters. The opportunity to come help rebuild KQED’s regional news service was irresistible. Since I believe in trying to leave the world at least a little bit better of a place then when I entered it, public radio’s mission has always attracted me. I think informing people is key to a healthy democracy, and building bridges between constituencies helps create a more civilized society. At KQED, I feel I’m part of that mission. What’s the most memorable story you’ve worked on at KQED? About a week after I started here, the explosion of the PG&E pipeline rocked San Bruno. It was trial by fire for me in the newsroom, since I barely knew the operating systems and was still learning the way KQED functioned. Witnessing the KQED News team operating under pressure that day, I knew I’d come to the right place. We were able to help our audience stay with this story — one that still resonates as we continue to look at the state’s infrastructure needs.

A Familiar Voice, Now a Familiar Face Riding up the elevator at KQED one morning, I strike up a conversation with a charming man whose voice sounds very familiar. Why? Turns out he’s Alan Cheuse, who’s been reviewing books on All Things Considered since the 1980s.

Tell me the story of how you became a reviewer for All Things Considered. I actually resisted for quite a while. I was living in Tennessee and got an assignment from a radio trade magazine to write about NPR. This was in the early ’80s, when NPR was a fairly young organization. I flew to D.C. and met a bunch of people, including Susan Stamberg. It was the only time I’ve ever been to Morning Edition — you have to get up at like 2am. Then, before I could even start writing the piece, I got a letter (that dates this story, doesn’t it?) saying the magazine was folding. Soon after, I got a call from Susan Stamberg’s producer asking if I had any interest in doing book reviews for ATC. I considered myself a print guy. I did college radio, but —. I gave a list of other people, but she called back, insisting. “Oh, okay,” I said. So I made a tape. I reviewed a novel by a Southern writer, I don’t remember who. I got a call back: “This is terrible, make another.” After the fifth or sixth one, they said they were going to use it. That was 1982. Now I do 40 to 50 reviews each year. I go down to the main NPR studio to record when I’m on the East Coast. During the summers, when I’m in Santa Cruz, I tape at KQED. 8

Are you originally from the West Coast? No. When I met my second wife in the late 1970s, she was the number two — as in only the second one — grad student in the history of consciousness program at U.C. Santa Cruz. I followed her to California. I spent a month or more there in winter of 1975 and fell in love with the Pacific Ocean. I’ve been going now for more than 30 years. The fog in the morning makes you stay home and work, and then you can take a beach walk in the afternoon. Who chooses the books you review? I choose the books. It’s rare that someone at NPR suggests something. I can remember some of those. For instance, I was asked to review The Iran-Contra Report as a thriller. And every now and then I’m asked to review a campaign biography. The rest are up to me. I try to read across the menu, from the deeply serious to thrillers to science fiction. I remain pretty much within the U.S. borders, although it’s difficult not to stray when there’s something like a new Murakami.

Does being a writer impact how you approach a book? Are most reviewers also writers? I think most people who review poetry tend to be poets, but I believe only half of people who review fiction are writers themselves. I think it’s favorable to have working artists reviewing other artists’ work. We can speak to the technique. Are you working on a novel now? Yes. Also, my novel Song of Slaves in the Desert comes out in paperback in July, and I have a new short story in the next issue of The Michigan Quarterly Review.

Cheuse wears a number of professional hats. He graciously offered himself up as an interview subject.

Thank you for your generous member support of KQED. We invite you to consider how you can also help shape the future of public broadcasting and increase your support — without writing another check. An excellent way to support KQED’s future is to make KQED a beneficiary of any unneeded portion of your retirement plan. When passed on to heirs, IRAs and 401Ks can incur significant income and estate taxes. Naming KQED as beneficiary avoids these taxes and helps build our endowment. Or you can include KQED in your estate plan through a bequest in your will or living trust. These options allow you to maintain control of your assets while increasing your commitment to public broadcasting. For more information about how you can support KQED through your estate plan, please send us the coupon below or contact the Gift Planning department at 415.553.2230 or legacy@kqed.org.
