This month, KQED invites the Bay Area to start conversations through a new public awareness campaign created in partnership with the Center on Civility and Democratic Engagement at the University of California at Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy. The goal of KQED’s rigorous, independent reporting isn’t simply to put stories on air or online, it’s to start conversations among our audience. When you talk to each other, you inevitably feel more closely connected to your community and your world. When we are at our best, we engage people in better understanding themselves and their neighbors, transcending differences, and finding empathy. —Holly Kernan, KQED News executive editor

were inspired to volunteer because of a KQED program they heard or saw; others who ended up calling a member of Congress because of a documentary on the lack of clean drinking water in the Central Valley. Last year, I spoke with a woman in East Oakland who works with low-income job seekers. She was contacted by a tech executive in Silicon Valley asking how he could help after hearing her on the radio. Recently I met a young immigrant cab driver from Sudan who told me he learned English from listening to KQED 88.5 FM all day long and talking about the news with his riders.

Stories can take us places we otherwise might not go: a homeless camp, a veteran’s hospital, an after-school program. We meet people through stories that we otherwise might never come across, so we know more about the man reading the news in Chinese on BART and the kid with the soccer ball heading to school. And when a story is extraordinary, when we are moved to laughter, tears or action, we feel compelled to reach out and tell someone about it. One of the best parts of my job is hearing from you. I hear wonderful testimonials all the time: people who

Breaking Ice for Popular Science One writer’s revealing two-month voyage aboard a polar icebreaker. Penguins, whales and giant sheets of ice. Few people ever venture to Antarctica, but that’s exactly where KQED freelance writer Brandon R. Reynolds started the New Year — aboard the 40-year-old USCGC Polar Star, the nation’s only operational heavy icebreaker. In a series of seven dispatches from Antarctica, Reynolds reveals the intricacies of staying afloat on the Polar Star during Operation Deep Freeze — the annual mission to carve a path through the ice so supply ships can reach the Antarctic research base McMurdo Station, the largest research base on the continent. The first dispatch chronicles Reynolds’ temporary disorientation as he leaves Tasmania, crossing the Southern Ocean on the way to Antarctica. Later posts vividly depict what it’s like spending days crushing ice that would imprison most vessels. Think nonstop earthquakes for a week! Throughout the series, Reynolds’ engaging blend of personal whimsy and coverage of serious science and policy issues will pull you along to the coldest and driest place on Earth to see what he’ll witness next. Come along for the icy ride and discover how the dauntless Polar Star and its crew are crucial to the future of polar science and our understanding of climate change — and ultimately Earth’s future. kqed.org/breaktheice

A Year in Space Astronaut Scott Kelly has been living aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for nearly twelve months — the longest space mission in American history — testing human limits for space travel and laying the groundwork for a manned mission to Mars. The two-part special A Year in Space, airing Wednesday, March 2, at 8pm on KQED 9, is adapted from TIME’s original digital video series about Scott and tracks his mission, from training and launch through his year aboard the ISS and his descent and return to Earth, which is scheduled to happen within a day of the broadcast. Following Scott in space and his identical twin Mark Kelly at home on Earth, the program tells the story of the mental and physical challenges of spending a year in space and then, using what NASA has learned from the Kelly brothers, what it means for humanity as we journey to Mars and beyond. The second installment is scheduled to air in 2017. March 2 is Space Night on KQED. Also airing: NOVA “First Man on the Moon” at 9pm and Makers “Women in Space” at 10pm.

Favorite Southern Fried Chicken Dishes in the South Bay From changing the way people pay for water to inspiring the construction of buildings out of mushrooms, California artists find creative and unusual ways to make a positive impact on the environment. Their efforts have never been more important than they are today as we struggle to overcome unprecedented environmental challenges. KQED’s Our Creative Nature project seeks to connect our audience with some of the most innovative artistic projects and people working in the ecological space. Our Creative Nature mobilizes the entire KQED Arts team — and collaborators — to create stories for radio, television and the Web and interact with audiences via social media. The project features stories that both explore new work at the cutting edge of the environmental art field and survey the legacy and impact of projects from California’s past. The recent article “The True Story of How Art Saved Yosemite Valley” looks at the instrumental role visual artists have played in capturing and preserving the Yosemite Valley in the popular imagination and ensuring its continued existence as a national park today.

Funding for KQED Arts is provided by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the California Arts Council.

A classic American comfort food, fried chicken is a delectable guilty pleasure. Traditional Southern fried chicken is typically marinated in buttermilk, then dredged in flour and deep-fried. However, from batter and frying methods to secret spice blends, chefs tend to lend their own interpretations to the dish. Furthermore, fried chicken can be served as a savory dish or served alongside fluffy waffles for a sweet spin. Bay Area Bites has found ten South Bay restaurants serving up unique versions of Southern fried chicken. If we missed your favorite spot, please be sure to share it in the online comments. To find this and other Bay Area Bites guides, click on the Restaurants tab at the top of the page.

Taxwise Giving Although it is too late to change last year’s tax situation, by planning ahead you may be able to reduce your tax liability for 2016. If you are age 60 or older, consider the benefits of a charitable gift annuity. Tax benefits can include • tax-free income • income tax deduction • reduced capital gains taxes (if appre- ciated securities are used to fund the gift annuity)

How does it work? Emma, age 70, has a $20,000 certificate of deposit paying 2 percent. If she uses the $20,000 to establish a charitable gift annuity with KQED, she will receive: • tax-free income — nearly 75 percent of Emma’s $1,020 annual annuity income is tax free • an immediate income tax deduction of approximately $8,000 • a 5.1 percent annuity rate for her life time, based on her age
