Give!” This month, KQED is rolling out a history-making alternative to the classic pledge drive. The new pledge-free radio stream is the first of its kind, the first attempt by any public radio station to offer listeners the

Midsomer Murders Fridays at 9pm on KTEH.

A third season of Midsomer Murders returns this month to KTEH. The international hit has been on the air since 1997 in Britain, where 83 episodes have aired, in 14 series and two Christmas specials. (We’re working our way to 83 episodes. Stay tuned.) For those new to the program, a bit of background: The rural countryside of the fictional English county of Midsomer provides the backdrop for the crime series based on the novels of Caroline Graham. Quirky characters and ubiquitous red herrings recall classic British public television mysteries of the past, and at the center of the investigations is Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John Nettles (pictured).

Did You Know? Midsomer Murders airs in more than 200 countries worldwide. • Popular filming locations are Brightwell Baldwin, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Chenies, Thame, Great Haseley, Haddenham, Hambleden, Latimer, Little Missenden, Long Crendon, Nether Winchendon, Nettlebed, Peppard, and Worminghall. • The haunting theme music is played on a theremin by Celia Sheen. • Celebrity fans are rumored to include British prime minister David Cameron and actors Joan Collins and Johnny Depp. • Each two-hour episode takes five weeks to film and averages three deaths. •

Profiles in Service Community can be found in many places: among the people in your neighborhood, the people at your place of worship or even, think big, the people with whom you share the planet. This month a new This is Us profiles two remarkable individuals dedicated to serving their communities: Tibetan monk Thupten Donyo and Carol Ruth Silver (pictured above).

Befriended by the Grateful Dead, Thupten Donyo toured the United States and eventually settled in Milpitas. With the goal of preserving Tibetan culture, Donyo turned a suburban home into a temple, recently visited by the Dalai Lama. In 1961, Carol Ruth Silver joined the Freedom Riders in an inspiring nonviolent challenge to segregation, then spent 39 days in a Mississippi prison. As a San Francisco supervisor, she narrowly escaped assassination. Today she helps educate Afghan girls.

Comm This new episode of This is Us airs Wednesday, May 4, at 7pm on KTEH.

Join KQED for a screening and discussion of the Independent Lens film Welcome to Shelbyville—a glimpse of America at a crossroads. Set in the heart of America’s Bible Belt, the documentary focuses on the residents of a small Southern town as they grapple with rapid demographic change and issues of immigration integration. The film captures the complexity of its African American, Latino, white, and Somali subjects as their lives intertwine against the backdrop of a crumbling economy and the election of a new president.

KTEH Public Television

New face joins Community Advisory Panel

Alfredo Pedroza C ity of residence

San Francisco

KTEH.org

Pr o fession /Emp loyer

Director of California Local Government Relations, Wells Fargo

Why is Alfredo Pedroza passionate about public media? Find out here, in the final Q&A with a new member of KQED’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP).

What public media program(s) do you try not to miss? I especially like PBS NewsHour and Nightly Business Report, simply because it’s so hard to find credible unsensationalized media reporting anywhere else! I also enjoy Check, Please! Bay Area, and, I have to admit, I still watch and enjoy Sesame Street.

munity Why did you want to be part of CAP? Growing up in San Francisco’s Mission District, KQED was an integral part of my childhood. Joining CAP for me was twofold. One, to give back to an organization that’s provided a lifetime of quality family programming to millions of Americans and two, to connect more people from my communities to the innovative content KQED creates. What special qualities/skills/ideas do you bring to the group? I am understanding of community and that access to information and quality media is essential to the development of those communities.

Who is your favorite Muppet? Kermit the Frog, because it’s not easy being green, and Elmo—I love that he speaks in the third person. Finish the sentence: “KQED is . . .” As much a part of the fabric of San Francisco as is the Golden Gate Bridge and Coit Tower and, in many ways, even more so because you have the opportunity to interact with KQED many more times a day!

Watch Online— Anytime Missed an episode of Antiques Roadshow? Wish you could experience a Nova program one more time? You can watch hundreds of programs from favorite series like Nova, Nature, Frontline, and Masterpiece as well as KQED’s Check, Please! Bay Area anytime. Go to http://video.kqed.org to revisit the iconic series you love and discover new favorites across all genres. 5
