American Masters “Mel Brooks: Make a Noise” premieres Monday, May 20, at 9pm on KQED 9.

KQED.org

“There are a few singular voices of genius in film comedy; Mel Brooks joins the ranks of Chaplin, Keaton and Woody Allen, creating a genre unto himself,” says Susan Lacy, creator and executive producer of American Masters. “This project has been a joy. Mel can make anything funny — he even had me in stitches during a conference call about distribution contracts. His humor is truly instinctive — and constant!” Summing up his experience making the film, filmmaker Robert Trachtenberg says, “I asked him deep, probing questions for four months, and he got to keep the shirt we bought for him. So I think we both made out pretty well.”

Brooks agreed to throw himself into a new documentary about his storied career, giving American Masters exclusive interviews and complete access to his film and photo archives. The film features new interviews with Brooks and his friends and colleagues, including Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Cloris Leachman, Joan Rivers, Tracey Ullman and close friend Carl Reiner, with whom he created The 2,000 Year Old Man more than 50 years ago. Showcasing the Brooklyn native’s brilliant, skewed originality, Mel Brooks: Make a Noise journeys through Brooks’ early years in the creative beginnings of live television — with Sid Caesar on Your Show of Shows — to the film genres he so successfully satirized in Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety and Spaceballs to the groundbreaking Broadway musical version of his first film, The Producers. The documentary also delves into his professional and personal ups and downs — his childhood, his first wife and his subsequent 41-year marriage to Anne Bancroft — capturing a never-beforeheard sense of reflection and confession.

After 60 years in show business, Mel Brooks has earned more major awards than any other living entertainer; he is one of 14 EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winners. Yet the comedy giant has energetically avoided a documentary profile being made, even issuing an informal gag order on his friends . . . until now.

Engineering Your Next Meal Are the benefits of genetically engineered food worth the risks?

U.C. Berkeley biologist Peggy Lemaux cuts a head of sorghum in her greenhouse. She’s genetically engineering the cereal, which is a staple food in Africa, to make it more easily digestible. Watch the QUEST television special Next Meal: Engineering Food Wednesday, May 8, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.

Proposition 37, which would have required foods containing genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled in California, narrowly lost at the ballot box last November. But the issue continues to spark debate. And it’s now the subject of a new QUEST documentary. Next Meal: Engineering Food, from KQED’s multimedia science series QUEST Northern California, explores how genetically engineered crops are made, their pros and cons, and what the future might hold for research and regulations, such as labeling. “This was a fascinating story to work on,” says Next Meal producer Gabriela Quirós. “There’s a lot of information and misinformation out there. A lot of people, for example, think that there’s genetically engineered wheat being grown in the United States, but farmers aren’t growing it anywhere in the world. On the other hand, it was

surprising to find out that nearly all of the soybeans, corn, sugarbeets and cotton grown in the U.S. are engineered.” Are the benefits of genetically engineered food worth the risks? To find out, visit the labs of two Northern California biologists who are engineering crops that could alleviate malnutrition in developing countries and withstand climate change. Next, explore the history of the first genetically engineered food to reach the market, a popular but short-lived tomato created in Davis in 1994. And meet a Marin County organic dairyman who is concerned that there may be health and environmental harm associated with genetically engineered crops and who fears they could contaminate the organic hay he feeds his cows. Have you heard? QUEST has expanded to five other public broadcasting stations across the country as part of a two-year multistation partnership on the Science of Sustainability. Find out more about the project at kqed.org/quest.

A companion River Delta iTunes U course is also in the works for release by this summer. For more information about the e-book, visit kqed.org/ebook.

KQED and the East Bay Regional Park District have pooled their multimedia resources to create River Delta, a visually absorbing, multitouch e-book with animation, maps and videos highlighting the diverse species and intricate ecosystem of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. River Delta also explores the complex engineering and waterusage issues affecting the Delta’s natural resources, people and wildlife. The book also addresses science education standards, including the topics of ecosystems, natural resources, geology and human impact. Ultimately, readers of all ages will come away with a deeper

understanding of what the Delta is, why it is so important to California and how it may be conserved for future generations. “With water issues at the forefront of our state’s future, we are especially pleased to collaborate with KQED and share our expertise to create such an exceptional resource for educational and public use,” remarks Robert E. Doyle, EBRPD general manager. The 47-page book was created with Apple’s digital book creation app, iBooks Author. The book is free and is available exclusively in the iBookstore in the textbook category. Non-iPad users can find most of KQED’s Delta-related media at kqed.org/quest under “California’s Deadlocked Delta” collection.

you watch the film. But the issues are still there and are still troubling for a lot of people.” A five-part Web series and online forum (theyreallsobeautiful.com) were created as a companion to Seeking Asian Female — to discuss the complex issues that form the backdrop of the film. “The videos are meant to ask questions, not answer them,” Debbie explains. “They are meant to engage an audience and get them to talk about things that are tricky, painful and charged.” “It’s not meant to be a diagnostic end-all to the conversation on ‘yellow fever.’ In fact, the forum challenges the notion of even the very phraseology we’re seeking to define. Many of the questions we pose have challenged Asian Americans in real life. In my case, the problem was not in the asking, but the countless ways to interpret the answers.”

Steven has a bad case of “yellow fever” — an obsession with Asian women. The KQED co-production Seeking Asian Female tells the eccentric modern love story of the 65-year-old man and Sandy, the Chinese bride half his age whom he finds online. With skepticism and humor local Chinese American filmmaker Debbie Lum documents and narrates from the early stages of Steven’s search, through the moment Sandy steps foot in San Francisco for the first time, to a year into their precarious union. As the film progresses, Debbie is pulled from behind the camera and into their relationship — as a translator, a couples counselor and the only one who actually knows what they are both thinking. “Deciding to put myself in the story was a challenge,” she admits. “One of the reasons I did it was because I realized I couldn’t take myself out of the story . . . and to make a good film required putting myself in it, even though I didn’t want to.” Debbie notes, “There’s an interesting journey that you go on when

In Calcutta, India, Amlan Ganguly empowers children to become activists and educators, with powerful results. Using street theater, puppetry and dance as their weapons, the children in Calcutta’s slums have cut their neighborhoods’ malaria and diarrhea rates in half and turned former garbage dumps into playing fields. The new documentary The Revolutionary Optimists follows Ganguly

as he pushes the limits of optimism, attempting to replicate his work in the brick fields outside the city, where children live and work in unimaginable conditions.
