own words tell much of her story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents — many of them made public for the first time — and read by Marshall. “The only way to tell Janis’ story was through Janis’ voice. Her letters show the vulnerable artist, daughter and lover Janis was in her short, but impactful life,” said writer, director and producer Berg. The film also includes original interviews with siblings Laura and Michael, friends, lovers, and fellow musicians, including Big Brother and the Holding Company bandmates Peter Albin, Sam Andrew and Dave Getz, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Country Joe McDonald (Country Joe and the Fish), Kris Kristofferson, Dick Cavett, and Clive Davis. They give us a complete sense of someone haunted by insecurity and a need for acceptance throughout her life, despite her on-stage bravado and uninhibited, sexualized persona.

One of the most revered and influential rock ’n’ roll singers of all time, Janis Joplin thrilled audiences and blazed new creative trails before her death at age 27 in 1970. Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg’s Janis: Little Girl Blue examines Joplin’s story in depth, for the first time on film, presenting an intimate portrait of a complicated and driven artist. The broadcast features a never-before-seen extended film cut with additional archival performance footage and new interviews with musicians influenced by Joplin: Alecia Moore (a.k.a. Pink), Juliette Lewis, Melissa Etheridge and the film’s narrator, Chan Marshall, who is best known as indie rock star Cat Power. In tribute, Marshall performs “A Woman Left Lonely” from Joplin’s final studio album Pearl, released posthumously on January 11, 1971. In this exploration of her childhood, struggles with addiction, active role in the musical and cultural revolution of the 1960s, surprising rise to stardom, and untimely demise, Joplin’s

News A New Voice on KQED Morning Radio If you are a weekday morning radio listener, you’ve heard a new voice during Morning Edition on KQED 88.5 FM. That’s Brian Watt, the newest member of the KQED News team. Before joining KQED in April to anchor the local morning news, Brian was a reporter for Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) in Los Angeles, on the work and entrepreneurship beat. Prior to that, he was a producer for the Marketplace Morning Report. His work has won several awards from the Los Angeles Press Club, the Radio Television News Association of Southern California and Public Radio News Directors Incorporated. “This is the work that I’ve always wanted to do, in a place where I’ve always wanted to live,” Brian told KQED. “I’m very proud of my accomplishments as a reporter, but my ultimate goal in public radio has always been to host or anchor, to tell listeners things they need to know and bring them stories that they want to hear.” Brian has deep ties to the Bay Area. “I am lucky to have married a woman from San Francisco, whom I met two decades ago in Paris,” he says. “After years of making numerous visits, we’re bringing our 4-year-old son to live closer to his grandparents and a huge Bay Area family.” And for what it’s worth, sports fans, Brian says he became a Golden State Warriors fan “the day they drafted Steph Curry. He’s from my home town [Charlotte, NC] and played college ball at Davidson, where some of my closest friends and relatives earned their degrees.” Go Dubs. Welcome, Brian.

Astute afternoon KQED Public Radio listeners have noticed that Sasha Khokha began in April as host of The California Report’s weekly magazine program. Sasha joined KQED in 2004 and had been The California Report’s Central Valley bureau chief for the past 11 years. In that role, she covered a vast geographic beat, including the nation’s most productive farm belt, some of California’s poorest towns, and Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. She reported on environmental justice issues, including air and water pollution, as well as bringing the lives and concerns of rural Californians to listeners across the state. “The California Report is the only public radio show that brings a statewide perspective to this huge, diverse place,” says Sasha. “It allows listeners on the freeway in San Diego or brushing their teeth in San Francisco to hear stories from Fresno, Mendocino and Sacramento. It brings us the stories of real people, the intimacy of their voices, and helps knit together our diverse state.” Sasha’s reporting has helped expose the hidden price that immigrant women janitors and farmworkers may pay to keep their jobs: sexual assault at work. Her Rape in the Fields series, produced in collaboration with the Center for Investigative Reporting and UC Berkeley’s Investigative Reporting Program, helped change California law with regard to sexual harassment training for farm supervisors. Her work has also won a national Public Radio News Directors Inc. award for investigative reporting, as well as multiple prizes from the Radio Television News Directors Association and the Society for Professional Journalists. Please join us in congratulating Sasha on her new role. 4

The Califonia Report’s magazine airs Fridays at 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 11pm on KQED 88.5 FM.

10 Favorite Sandwich Shops South of San Francisco

Which is more worthy of discussion? A Virginia Woolf novel or a breakup song by Taylor Swift? The answer is . . . both! KQED’s weekly podcast The Cooler covers all corners of popular culture without subscribing to the “high art” versus “low art” dichotomy. Now in its second season, KQED Pop creator and editor Emmanuel Hapsis and his co-hosts Jamedra Brown-Fleischman and Carly Severn have tackled everything from why America owes Janet Jackson an apology for Nipplegate to whether there are classist implications to calling something pretentious. In addition to smart cultural commentary, The Cooler regularly interviews movers and shakers like Oscar-nominated Disney Pixar animator Sanjay Patel, Vanity Fair journalist Nancy Jo Sales and New York Magazine columnist and famed podcaster Ann Friedman, among others. So what are you waiting for? Meet your three new best friends by subscribing to The Cooler on iTunes or visiting KQED’s website.

Meat and cheese piled high between freshly baked bread make deli sandwiches an easy comfort dish that nearly anyone can enjoy. While some swoon for a turkey avocado sandwich others opt for a Italian cold cut combo. Bay Area Bites’ collection of 10 popular sandwich shops south of San Francisco range from small, family-owned delis to a newly-opened gastropub, but all serve a sandwich worth waiting in line for! If we missed your favorite spot, please be sure to share it in the online comments. To find this and other guides, click on the Restaurants tab at the top of the Bay Area Bites page.

Education Read, Write and Teach New media in the classroom

Beginning in June, New Media Storytelling not only will provide free online professional development courses, but also will give teachers opportunities to share their media work and insights with others. Every course ends with a Make and Share lesson, says project lead Randall Depew. “We want to give teachers the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and do it, just like we hope they will with their students. We also want it to be a lot of fun!” Learn more about the courses, sign up for email updates and watch the first New Media Storytelling videos, coming soon. teach.kqed.org

It’s clear that middle and high school students are online — on multiple devices — all the time. But technological savvy doesn’t automatically translate to digital literacy (i.e., having the specific skills they need to access, analyze, evaluate, create and communicate using media in all its forms). Many teachers feel intimidated by the task of integrating lessons that critically engage students with online media. To help teachers, this summer KQED is launching New Media Storytelling at teach.kqed.org. It’s a website where teachers can learn how to create compelling online videos and audio themselves and how to best use social media like Facebook and Twitter in their classroom.

molds, creatures that are neither plants nor animals nor fungi, but are able to solve many problems with their very simple structure. Deep Look focuses on how one type of slime mold moves, and IOTBS takes a look at slime molds that seem to sacrifice themselves for the good of their species. Deep Look cinematographer Josh Cassidy sped up footage of a brightyellow slime mold to reveal the jelly-like blob pulsating as it spreads out in a lace pattern. Scientists at the University of California at San Diego and UC Davis are studying how slime molds contract and flow, in hopes that one day the knowledge will help build something like a robotic goo that could inch its way through our body and help us stay healthy by doing things like unclogging our arteries. You can watch KQED’s new Deep Look video on our website. Within the video, you’ll find a link to the It’s Okay To Be Smart video. If you like what you see, subscribe to both series on YouTube. kqed.org/deeplook

Funding for Deep Look is provided in part by PBS Digital Studios and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Deep Look is a project of KQED Science, which is supported by HopeLab; The David B. Gold Foundation; S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation; the Smart Family Foundation; The Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation; and The Vadasz Family; and The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Deep Look, KQED’s award-winning online science series hosted by radio reporter Amy Standen, has collaborated on two new videos with It’s Okay To Be Smart (IOTBS), one of the most popular science shows on the Web. IOTBS is hosted by Austin-based biologist Joe Hanson, who brings humor and high energy to his videos, while Deep Look uses stunning macro photography to draw viewers in. Both series are presented by PBS Digital Studios on YouTube. “Deep Look is one of my favorite shows on YouTube,” said Joe. “The artistry and unique perspectives on nature are just mind-blowing. So working with them is a real treat. . . . By creating this sort of collaborative project, we get to combine two different styles and ways of telling stories and reach an even bigger audience than either of us could on our own. It’s collaborations like this that make YouTube such an exciting place to be making content today.” Each series produced a video that includes a guest appearance by the other series’ host. Both videos are about slime

Ever since it debuted on KQED Public Radio in July 2010, Snap Judgment — hosted by Glynn Washington and produced in Oakland — has been sharing compelling stories about extraordinary and defining events in people’s lives. Described by a listener as “like a mash-up of This American Life and The Moth — as narratively gripping and thought-provoking as the former and as soulful and personal as the latter,” part of Snap Judgment’s appeal is that although the stories might be extraordinary, the
