American Masters — Jacques Pépin: The Art of Craft premieres Friday, May 26, at 9pm on KQED 9.

It’s an only-in-America story: a roguish young immigrant with movie-star looks, a charming Gallic accent, a sense of anything’s-possible optimism and an ability to raise humble kitchen techniques to a breathtaking art form becomes one of the nation’s most beloved and revered food icons. Jacques Pépin’s story — which encompasses his contributions to the profession of cooking, food television and the very way we eat today — is a tale even his legions of devoted fans may not be familiar with. Today he is known as a kitchen supernova, a working whirlwind of creative energy even at 80 years old, who crisscrosses the country teaching, cooking, speaking, consulting and enjoying the celebrity generated by 13 successful television cooking series, nearly 30 cookbooks and accolades ranging from an Emmy Award to the French Legion of Honor. The new KQED and American Masters documentary Jacques Pépin: The Art of Craft traces Jacques’ surprising journey from the countryside of wartime France to cooking at the most influential French restaurant in the United States to improving the food at a massive American roadside restaurant chain to the car accident that took him from behind the stove into a new career as a writer, a teacher and ultimately a media star. Jacques’ story and personality are brought vividly to life in the film, not only through his own recollections, but also through a trove of unique archival imagery and film, and the heartfelt testimony of his colleagues and family (including wife Gloria and daughter Claudine, his frequent on-camera collaborator), along with a who’s-who of culinary stars and media personalities such as José Andrés, Anthony Bourdain, Tom Colicchio, Dana Cowin, Rachael Ray, Marcus Samuelsson and Fareed Zakaria.

News

The Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) — an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public understanding of health care issues — has awarded KQED Public Radio health reporter April Dembosky its top prize in the beat reporting category for her “2016 body of work.” Among April’s many 2016 stories, the AHCJ highlighted that her reporting exposed how some pharmaceutical companies doubled the price of Seconal, the drug used for aid-in-dying patients; how insurance companies have circumvented mental health laws, making it more difficult for patients to get the mental health care they need; and how the Affordable Care Act has complicated immigration concerns in California’s farming industry.

The AHCJ award judges noted that April’s work “shows the true range of a great health care reporter,” adding that her stories were “compelling and well-crafted, providing context, emotion and character, often in just a few minutes. We were impressed by the creativity and breadth of her ideas and the quality of her execution.” Said April, “I’m so honored to receive this award from AHCJ. It feels so important to be reporting on health right now. There have been so many shifts in health-care policy and business practices in recent years, it’s crucial that we understand how patients and their families are impacted by the changes. It is an honor and privilege for me to sit and talk with people and to share their stories with our listeners.” KQED News reporting on health is supported by the California Endowment and the members of KQED .

Bill Moyers on the Freedom of the Press A conversation with KQED’s John Boland

Rikers: An American Jail, a riveting new documentary from Bill Moyers, brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. Moday, May 22, at 9pm on KQED 9. 4

Fifty years after the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 established the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and eventually, PBS and NPR, public media is at a crossroads. The CPB is facing the possibility of being cut out of the federal budget, and the Trump administration has so far demonstrated a dismissive, even confrontational attitude toward the mainstream press. Although the current predicament has been sudden, it’s not the first time that public media and the press have been challenged in such ways. Perhaps no one is more prepared to comment on these issues than Bill Moyers, one of the most recognizable figures in the history of public broadcasting.

Moyers will join KQED President John Boland for a unique discussion about the challenges currently facing the media in age of increasing hostility toward the press and what citizens and journalists can do about it. Thursday, May 18 Doors open at 6:15pm, 7pm start The Castro Theatre, San Francisco $20 KQED members; $25 nonmembers; $18 students Use code KQEDMoyers for discount. Tickets available through City Box Office: www.cityboxoffice.com or 415.392.4400

Learning

Engineering for Good Plastic is a useful and ubiquitous item in our lives, but the fact that it doesn’t biodegrade means that it has long-term effects on Earth. Using KQED Learning’s new Next Generation Science Standard–aligned, project-based learning unit, middle school science classrooms across the country are developing solutions to address the negative impacts of plastic on the environment. With Engineering for Good, students use the engineering design process to define the “plastic problem,” brainstorm solutions, develop prototypes and iterate on their designs. They also create infographics that communicate their newly gained understanding of plastics as part of their storytelling process. The project culminates with students producing videos about their solutions to share with their community. Embedded throughout the unit are KQEDoriginal media resources, including an animated video that follows the steps of the engineering design process; a video about the history, uses and impacts of plastics; and stories from our Engineering Is series that showcase scientists and engineers working together to solve real-world problems. Teachers are supported in their participation of Engineering for Good through the KQED Teach online professional learning platform, which provides specific instruction on how to create media and also connects them to a professional learning community of peers that can offer feedback, inspiration and support. Start challenging your students to use engineering to solve real-world problems, and see examples of students’ solutions on social media by following #EngineeringforGood. kqed.org/engineeringforgood

Victorian Slum House premieres Tuesday, May 2, at 8pm on KQED 9.

On Q May 2017

In Victorian Slum House, a group of modernday families, couples and individuals re-create life in London’s East End as their forebearers once lived between 1860 and 1900. It’s an eye-opening experience for the participants as they each confront the harsh realities of the past and together lay the groundwork for welfare reform in the 20th century.

The two-part Nature series “Spy in the Pod” airs Wednesday, May 3 and 10, at 8pm on KQED 9.

On Q May 2017

Capturing unique footage from 13 ingenious spy cameras, including animatronic squid, a robotic turtle and even a dolphin “double agent,” a new Nature film treats us to the complex, unexpected and often humorous adventures of these iconic sea mammals.

Child of Giants: My Journey With Maynard Dixon and Dorothea Lange tells the story of Daniel Rhodes Dixon, who is the elder son of photographer Dorothea Lange (pictured) and painter Maynard Dixon. While Lange and Dixon were in the field creating their art, Daniel and his younger brother, John, beginning at the ages of 7 and 4, were sent to a series of foster homes, never knowing when they might see their parents again. Child of Giants airs Friday, May 12, at 8pm on KQED 9. A new season of Truly CA films begins in June!

Journey to the late 1920s, when the music of ordinary Americans was recorded for the first time. Over three episodes, the remarkable lives of seminal musicians materialize in previously unseen film footage, unpublished photographs and exclusive interviews with some of the last living witnesses to that era, when musical styles from across the country first emerged. (Pictured: The first-ever color film footage of Mississippi John Hurt, by K. Swerilas, here performing “Louis Collins.”) American Epic airs on three consecutive Tuesdays at 9pm, beginning May 16 on KQED 9.
