If you were asked to name a novel that changed your life, what book would you say? The Great American Read, a new eight-part television series and nationwide campaign that explores the joy of books and the power of reading, will take you on a journey across the country to find America’s best-loved novel. “The power of reading is extraordinary,” says host Meredith Vieira, author and 14-time Emmy Award winner. “It allows us to escape to new worlds, introduces us to a diverse range of people, opens our minds to different ideas and allows us to keep learning no matter our age or background.” Produced by PBS in partnership with Nutopia, The Great American Read explores the power of literature and the joy of reading through the lens of America’s 100 bestloved novels, as chosen by you. An announcement of all 100 books, selected from a demographically representative national survey conducted by market research firm YouGov, will be made available to the public prior to the launch episode on Tuesday, May 22, at 8pm on KQED 9. Voting will open in tandem with the two-hour premiere and will continue throughout the summer, leading up to the grand finale in October 2018. To spark conversation about the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, both as individuals and

Check, Please! Bay Area Returns for Season 13

4

Check, Please! Bay Area features guests and eateries as diverse the Bay Area itself — and Season 13 is no different! Tune in Thursdays at 7:30pm on KQED 9 for all-new episodes of the show that turns local diners into amateur restaurant critics. In each episode of the James Beard and Emmy Award–winning program, three local diners choose their favorite place to eat, while the other two guests visit anonymously. The restaurants are not notified that Check, Please! reviewers are dining there. After trying each other’s recommendations, they join host and moderator Leslie Sbrocco to discuss, dispute and celebrate their dining experiences. “Check Please guests always surprise and delight me,” says Sbrocco. “They have an endless appetite for new restaurants and cuisines, and never fail to bring a fresh perspective. With each episode, we get to explore these Bay Area favorites with the people who know them best.” Season 13 celebrates the diverse people who call the Bay Area home. Guests for this season include drag stars Sister Roma and BeBe Sweetbriar, attorneys, homemakers, venture capitalists, hairdressers and DJs as well as celebrity chef Ryan Scott. Get ready for a gastronomic adventure, including Brenda’s French Soul Food offering up a taste of New Orleans in the Tenderloin, savory bites at La Marcha Tapas Bar in Berkeley, the wildly flamboyantly decorated Buck’s of Woodside and a visit to Paris via Lafayette at Reve Bistro. Want to be a guest on Check, Please! Bay Area? Apply at kqed.org/checkplease.

You’ve been waiting and now it’s here! KQED’s popular Check, Please! Bay Area’s Taste & Sip food and wine event will be held Tuesday, May 22, 6:30–9pm, at the San Francisco Design Center Galleria. Sample mouthwatering bites from nearly 50 Check, Please! Bay Area–reviewed restaurants, sip wines from around the world and enjoy specialty cocktails. “Taste & Sip is my favorite event of the year,” says Check, Please! Bay Area host Leslie Sbrocco. “Not only are there world-class wines and spirits to sip, top-notch local eateries also show up to show off their best bites. It’s also my chance to meet and mingle with the fans of the show; making them a part of the Check, Please! family is the goal of the event for me.” Tickets are $85 for KQED members, $95 general and available at kqed.org/ checkplease. All food and beverages are included in the ticket price. Must be 21 years or older to attend. Special thanks to Check, Please! but one that paid off in a larger sense, giving a voice to the black pioneers who had largely been written out of history. The book remains widely available today. Beasley continued writing her column for the Oakland Tribune until her death in 1934. She is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland, and her tombstone reads: “Author and columnist, a native of Ohio and for 25 years, a resident of Oakland.” Beasley’s own words might have proved a more fitting tribute to her tenacious trailblazing. “Every life casts its shadow,” she once wrote, “My life plus others make a peer to move the world. I, therefore, pledge my life to the living world of brotherhood and mutual understanding between the races.” Read more at kqed.org/pop. In her writing, Beasley not only bucked racist stereotypes by putting an emphasis on achievements in the African American community, but also managed to shine a light on the barriers that people of color — and women — faced in their everyday lives. Even when she was writing about local issues, Beasley’s vision was big picture. She had an instinct and understanding that her column had the potential to act as a direct line to both the white establishment, which could affect legal change, and the average white household, which might encourage social change. In 1919, Beasley self-published her book, The Negro Trail-Blazers of California, which she had painstakingly researched over the course of nine years, prompted by history lessons she took at the University of California at Berkeley. Publishing the book herself was a risk that put her in debt for three years,

KQED Pop’s new series, Rebel Girls, highlights female trailblazers from the Bay Area’s past. Discover Sofia Mendoza, a civil rights activist and beloved community organizer who battled for better schools, a fairer police force and Hispanic rights, and innovators like Louise Arner Boyd, an Arctic explorer and photographer who was utterly fearless in her adventures, which included going on eight Arctic expeditions and being the first woman to fly over the North Pole. Another woman in Bay Area Herstory, Delilah L. Beasley was a pioneering journalist and dedicated writer who used her pen as a weapon in the fight for equality. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, circa 1867, Beasley settled in Oakland. By the early 20th century, she had become a key chronicler of California’s black population with her weekly column, “Activities Among Negroes” for the Oakland Tribune.

KQED Learn Launch Success

6

KQED Learn — a new digital platform that encourages student inquiry and collaboration in and beyond the classroom — made its official debut at the CUE Conference, held in March in Palm Springs. Educators attending the event were highly enthusiastic about the safe, free online space and its ability to give students a voice, a publishing platform, and a connection to the issues and events that impact their lives. This new educational resource is another example of how KQED delivers innovative learning opportunities for students and teachers. In the first week, more than 500 educators signed up for the service. Robin Mencher, executive director of education for KQED, explains, “We created KQED Learn to address educators’ requests for an inquirylearning platform that encourages student voice and agency. By connecting

media literacy, media making and inquiry, KQED Learn supports students as they learn to form, express and support their ideas. The platform protects students’ and teachers’ privacy and supports a range of instructional needs, from whole class projects to independent student work.” Mencher also noted that KQED worked side by side with teachers during the development of the platform. KQED Learn joins KQED’s two other digital services for educators: KQED Teach, which offers free online courses for teachers to become experts in media literacy, and PBS LearningMedia California, which offers more than 100,000 standards-aligned free media clips and instructional materials for classroom use. KQED Learn leverages KQED’s popular online video series for teens, Above the Noise, which investigates

questions on timely topics relevant to young people. Above the Noise cuts through the hype so students can dig into the facts behind current issues. Using KQED Learn, students post their videos, podcasts, graphics and written responses, and peers in their own classes as well as students from around the Bay Area and throughout the country have an opportunity to respond and pose new and related questions. These students are developing critical skills they’ll use throughout their academic and civic lives. learn.kqed.org Funding for KQED Education is provided by the Koret Foundation, David Bulfer and Kelly Pope, the Cisco Foundation, the Silver Giving Foundation, the Stuart Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Panta Rhea Foundation, the Braitmayer Foundation, the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund and the members of KQED.

For many, 2017 was a year of shocks. We saw some of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. We witnessed a president with little political experience take office and operate far outside the traditional norms of American leadership. We saw the voices of thousands of women take down some of the most powerful men in media and politics. We saw the country become increasingly divided — politically, economically and socially. As we look forward through 2018, KQED presents a free series of live conversations exploring some of the most polarizing topics of our time: politics, race, gender, immigration, extremism and more. We’ll ask the questions that divide us and look for the answers that unite us. And audience members will have an opportunity to talk about solutions to our growing polarity as they meet and mix during a postconversation reception. Join us at the Oakland Museum of California on Wednesday, May 9, at 7pm for a conversation about immigration and on Thursday, May 17, at 7pm for a discussion on how ZIP codes affect health care and education. Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr was known as the world’s most beautiful woman. However, her arresting appearance and glamorous life stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionize modern communication. An Austrian Jewish emigrant who invented a covert communication system to try to help defeat the Nazis, Lamarr was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead. It was only toward the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered it was her concept that is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth technologies. This new American Masters reveals Lamarr’s true legacy as a technological trailblazer. Hedy Lamarr: American Masters premieres Friday, May 18, at 9pm on KQED 9.
