Thanks to You ’Tis the season for giving thanks, and KQED would like to extend a special “thank you” to all our donors and members. With your help this year, KQED has remained loyal to our mission, providing television, radio, digital media, and educational services to Northern Californians. In 2011, your support enabled KQED News to launch new partnerships and expand its use of cutting-edge technologies —hello iPhone app! (see page 4)—as well as increase coverage of local, national, and international news. Our investigative collaborations with the Berkeley-based Center for Investigative Reporting brought you two new multimedia specials. On Shaky Ground uncovered the truth about seismic safety standards in California schools and Republic of Cannibis focused on issues raised by California’s booming medical marijuana industry. In addition to local television favorites like Check, Please! Bay Area, This Week in Northern Califonia, and This is Us, this fall KQED was delighted to air four San Francisco Opera productions and the new documentary San Francisco Symphony at 100. We also welcomed chef Jacques Pépin back to public television with Essental Pépin—26 new episodes of enticing culinary entertainment. The KQED presentation The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! has remained among the most popular children’s programs on television, and we’re talking nationwide! If you were addicted to Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey (a new season is coming to KQED in January 2012!) or marveled at the new Ken Burns and Lynn Novick film,
Prohibition, you were not alone. We hope you continue to enjoy all our programming and will support our fundraising efforts during the holidays. Please consider making an additional gift to KQED if it is within your means. A financial contribution of any size helps us offer the services you can count on and the programs you love. If you choose to make a gift in 2011, please note that donations made by check must be postmarked by 12/31/2011. If you have any questions, please call one of the numbers listed below and a KQED staff member will be happy to assist you. “What Is Space?” (11/2) “The Illusion of Time” (11/9) “Quantum Leap” (11/16) “Universe or Multiverse?” (11/23)
To the uninitiated, string theory is totally mind-boggling. But Briane Green’s first PBS series, The Elegant Universe, makes the surreal world of string theory spring to life on the screen. Watch it following The Fabric of the Cosmos on KQED 9.

Acclaimed physicist and host Brian Greene lets NOVA viewers in on a secret: We’ve all been deceived. Our perceptions of time and space have led us astray. Much of what we thought we knew about our universe—that the past has already happened and the future is yet to be, that space is just an empty void, that our universe is the only universe that exists—just might be wrong. Based on Greene’s best-selling book, the new four-hour NOVA series The Fabric of the Cosmos will take us on a mind-bending reality check and journey to the frontiers of physics to see how scientists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time, and the universe. Greene has a rare gift for conveying physics in vivid everyday images, and this series promises to be the most visually compelling and entertaining presentation of modern physics ever seen on television—interweaving provocative theories, experiments, and stories with crystal-clear explanations and imaginative metaphors, as well as state-of-the-art computer graphics. With each step, you’ll discover that just beneath the surface of our everyday experience lies a world you’d hardly recognize—a startling world far stranger and more wondrous than anyone expected.

Along with photos of their children and comments about their lives, they share their opinions on the issues and challenges facing their communities. KQED News is working to stay informed about those challenges and how they impact the Bay Area, in part by maintaining an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. Facebook.com/kqednews and Twitter.com/kqednews have emerged as places where local residents can share their concerns and talk directly to one of Northern California’s most respected news organizations about what’s happening in their neighborhoods. Ian Hill, KQED News’s online community engagement specialist, answered some questions about his social media efforts and the news team’s focus on bringing the online community into news coverage.

How do you approach the job? I see my primary goal as making the community aware of what we do as a local news organization. Even though KQED is a well-known and respected source of information in the Bay Area, many don’t realize that we only launched a local news service that included radio, television, and the Internet in 2010. I spend much of my time searching
Why is it important for KQED News to be so active on social media? Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are among the places people go today to discuss the issues that affect their lives. They post about the challenges facing their neighborhoods, their friends, and families. That’s what’s news to them. For KQED News to resonate with the community, we have to make sure we’re aware of those challenges when we plan our coverage.
We launched our Facebook and Twitter pages this year in part to give Bay Area residents a place to share their opinions on the issues and to show how our news coverage reflects their concerns. You mentioned that you look for ways to get the public involved in the news. The public has always been involved, reporters have just rarely referred to them as “the public.” Typically, to reporters, members of the public are sources—they’re the neighbors quoted in a story about a house fire, the community activists whose comments are included in coverage about environmental issues, and the dog walkers who share their opinions on proposed changes to leash laws. Social media and the Internet has just made it easier for reporters to get in touch with the public while also giving the public a direct line to reporters through posts on Facebook and Twitter. It’s my job to make sure the public knows that direct line exists.

Facebook and Twitter for people talking about local issues and I try to include KQED News’s coverage in that conversation. I often talk with community organizations and residents affected by our coverage to make sure they get the information we have available. I also work to keep our reporters and editors updated on issues being discussed online so we can do our best to ensure that our coverage follows the community’s concerns.

You’ve got quite a job title. What are your responsibilities? My title fills the length of my business card in very small type! Basically it breaks down to me talking to people online about KQED News. I’m responsible for using the Internet to make sure the community knows what we offer. I also respond to questions about KQED News through social media, I organize community events based on the news, and I look for ways to get the public involved in the news.

KQED Staff Picks Who better to guide you to your new favorite public media programs and Web content than a KQED staff member?
This makes two months in a row that Frontline, Downton Abbey, and This American Life were chosen as KQED staff picks. It wasn’t planned. Really. We’re betting at least one of them is your favorite too.
Radio and Podcasts I’ve listened to every episode of This American Life going back to 1999 (I kid you not) via live broadcast, podcast, or their website. If you haven’t heard their Peabody Award–winning episode on the roots of the financial crisis called “The

Giant Pool of Money,” I can’t recommend it enough. You can find it at ThisAmericanLife.org under “Favorites.” My girlfriend and I can’t wait for the Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me! podcast to arrive each Saturday. I usually download it to my phone and then play it through the car stereo during our weekend drives. We love Carl Kassell! KQED.org The “News Fix” blog is a fantastic source for breaking Bay Area news. The daily “Morning Splash” also conveniently compiles a list of interesting articles from around the Web. Since I moved to the West Coast a few years ago, the “Bay Area Bites” blog has helped inculcate me into the foodie culture here. Clearly, there’s a reason why it’s one of the most popular sections of our site!
American Indian Heritage Celebration KQED, the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, the Friendship House Association of American Indians, the Native American AIDS Project, the East Bay Native American Health Center, the San Francisco Native American Health Center, and the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley are proud to celebrate the rich culture of the American Indian community.

Television I turn to Frontline when I want to learn about a news item from its origins. Their documentary on the Bernie Madoff scandal helped me tie together the fragmented information I had heard or read from other sources and filled in the gaps. It’s an incredible educational resource—and you can watch full episodes online! And I don’t know how Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey hooked me in, but it did. That’s quite a feat considering I couldn’t get through the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice.

In Silicon Valley, one third of residents are immigrants and two thirds of kids under 18 have parents who are immigrants. These demographics represent a large segment of our South Bay community. For the past six years, KQED Education has been offering resources to support English as a Second Language (ESL) educators who work with immigrant communities throughout the valley and the Bay Area. Integrating multimedia resources into the ESL curriculum can enrich learning and support language acquisition. For example, using KQED content from sources such as Ocean Adventures, QUEST, and the “MindShift” blog engages immigrant learners as they work with vocabulary and issues that resonate with their lives. What Does the Public Know About You?—Does it Matter?, a lesson plan based on a “Mindshift” post, explores how careful students need to be with what they reveal online. As technology transforms the way students learn, KQED also trains ESL educators to integrate media making into instruction. Using digital media enables students to express themselves creatively and make connections between language acquisition and everyday experiences. For example, Hayward High School ESL students made a film about the school’s Farmer’s Garden and Ecology Center. The assignment furthered their understanding of what’s involved in growing food while developing their appreciation of the broader principles of environmental responsibility, such as sustainability and recycling. Find out more about KQED’s nationally recognized ESL resources at kqed.org/esl
