Thank You! In this season of giving thanks, KQED would like to extend an extra special “thank you” to all our donors and members. It is only with your help that KQED continues to provide programs and services that help individuals and communities achieve their full potential. In 2012, our ongoing collaborations with the Berkeley-based Center for Investigative Reporting brought you two new multimedia news specials. Prison Break investigated the impact of prison reform in California and Heat and Harvest explored the impact of climate change on agriculture in the 21st century. Additionally, KQED Presents shared several outstanding new programs with a national audience. California State of Mind: The Legacy of Pat Brown told the story of the former governor and his extraordinary impact on the state; California Forever offered a visually stunning and engaging story of California’s state parks; and Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders profiled musicians from around the globe and the stories behind their music. We hope you continue to enjoy all our programming and will support our fundraising efforts during the holidays. Please consider making an additional gift to KQED if it is within your means. A financial
contribution of any size helps us offer the services you can count on and the programs you love. If you choose to make a gift in 2012, please note that donations made by check must be postmarked by 12/31/2012. Belva Davis Retires from KQED A new chapter begins after 19 years as host of This Week in Northern California. Belva Davis finally has some time to breathe as she sits down to talk at the KQED studios. She’s recently returned from the 2012 national political conventions and is looking ahead to her final broadcast as host of This Week in Northern California on November 9. Belva smiles, “I hope it turns out to be interesting and not a teary messy muddle.” Belva was the first female African American television journalist in the West (on KPIXTV), and for nearly half a century, she’s reported on many of the most important stories of our time. From the University of California at Berkeley Free Speech Movement student protests and the birth of the Black Panthers to the Peoples Temple cult that ended in the mass suicides at Jonestown, the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and the terrorist attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania that first put Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Her storied career has been bookended by politics. In 1964, while working at KDIA AM radio, she attended the Republican National Convention in San Francisco. She and her colleague left amid racial epithets and a throng “tossing garbage at us — wadded up convention programs, mustard-soaked hotdogs, half-eaten Snickers bars . . . then a glass soda bottle whizzed within inches of my skull . . .”
This Week in Northern California airs Fridays at 7:30pm on KQED 9. Encore presentations on KQED World air Saturdays at 9:30am and 7pm and Sundays at 11am.

An interview you did in North Carolina with Maya Angelou will be part of your final This Week in Northern California broadcast. How did you two meet? I met her through the circle of people that bound themselves to public television and the idea of it. And this was way before I ever worked in public television. But how we got to really be friends, I couldn’t tell
you except that she was part of a group that came [in the early 1960s] to the Rainbow Sign — a black-owned book club and artists' hangout in Berkeley, where James Baldwin and the like came to have intellectual discussions. That’s where we met, and it grew and grew from there. What do you see yourself doing after November? I haven’t really been able to get a vision of what it is that I’ll do. For the moment I serve on three boards that are really interesting — the Fine Arts Museum, the War Memorial Board and the Institute on Aging — and those could be a full-time job if I dedicated more time to them. But I’m sure that there will be another chapter related to the business of media and communications. It’s been my life for well over 50 years. I don’t think the door is just going to close. I just have to be open and wait for it to come to me. Read the complete interview with Belva at kqed.org/onq-exclusives.

I imagine you were thinking about your experience in 1964 while you were at the Republican convention in Tampa. More before I got there, actually. The anticipation of it. Unfortunately, it lacked color as much in 2012 as it did in 1964. And that was rather a sad thing . . . No one did anything overtly to me, but it was just the mood. My takeaway is to try not to feel guilt on behalf of an industry I work in because we’ve contributed so much, by the very nature of the way we operate with these two separate camps of information streams to the separation of Americans and the ways they think about themselves and their country.
KQED News reporters are preparing for one of their busiest nights of the year – The California Report’s live election special featuring reporters from around the state, guest analysts and, of course, ballot results. “It’s an adrenalin rush,” says senior producer Ingrid Becker. Even in nonelection times, the job of producing KQED’s statewide news service is never dull. As a longtime editor, tell us what makes a good story. Well, lots of things — and that’s what makes this job so dynamic. Since we’re a statewide show, I look for stories that will
that story in a way that people in various communities will understand why it matters to them. We do that by constantly asking ourselves, “How is this going to come across to the listener? Have we explained enough of the details about how this story relates to people’s lives? Or did we as journalists get too deep in the weeds on a particular policy?”

KQED Public Radio KQED 88.5 FM is your destination for the most accurate election coverage. NPR election-night coverage begins at 5pm on November 6. KQED’s The California Report, hosted by Scott Shafer, will dovetail each hour beginning at 8pm with detailed results of California congressional races and ballot initiatives and significant local races across the state.
Good radio is all about the sound. So when you’re talking about the craft of radio, there are some key elements that help make a story a good one. One of those is having a sense of place. When we’re telling the story of an Olympic hopeful, we need to take you, the listener, to the boxing ring where he’s training and let you hear the sounds of that room so that you start to feel you’re right there. Another element to good storytelling is character. Stories with a strong character help connect the listener. One example was a story we did about joblessness in the Central Valley. In that piece, the reporter followed a job seeker through her day, and we heard the woman knocking on doors only to be turned down for interviews. The plight of a jobless person was made so much more real when the reporter allowed us to hear directly from a strong character who told us in her words what it was like to struggle so hard to find any kind of employment. What’s been the most memorable story during your time at KQED? The 2003 recall election of Governor Gray Davis. To have the state’s first successful recall election was stunning enough, but when Davis was replaced with bodybuilder actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California grabbed the world spotlight.

Be Moved by KQED’s First e-Book —
Earthquake
The Earthquake e-book was produced by Andrea Swensrud and Jenny Oh of KQED and Helena Carmena and Jaynée Howe of the California Academy of Sciences.
How long has Belva Davis hosted This Week in Northern California?

Bringing together the expertise of California’s oldest science institution and Northern California’s largest public broadcasting station, the California Academy of Sciences and KQED have developed a new multi-touch e-book about earthquakes. The project represents the first collaboration between a science institution and a public broadcasting station to create original content using Apple’s iBooks Author and iTunes U platform. The iTunes U course Earthquake, which works in conjunction with the e-book of the same name, launched simultaneously. Both the e-book and course are free to download from iTunes and coincide with the California Academy of Sciences’ new exhibit Earthquake: Life on a Dynamic Planet. The iTunes U course is designed for middle- and highschool science educators to broaden their own knowledge and to use with their students. The e-book serves as an
interactive complement to the course and is also designed as a stand-alone book for lifelong learners. Together, these two resources shed new light on what earthquakes are and how they move continents, form our landscape and fit into the larger story of plate tectonics. “We are delighted to partner with the California Academy of Sciences to leverage the latest technology to better serve our community and elevate the understanding of science,” says KQED president John Boland. “We are particularly excited about the potential for repurposing KQED’s rich and informative content in a visually engaging way using e-book technology, and this initial project leads the way. This is an important milestone in KQED’s long history of creating learning media and partnering with other nonprofit institutions to serve our community.” KQED has plans to produce more e-books in the future. For more information about the Earthquake ebook visit kqed.org/ebook.

The Computer History Museum and The Financial Times Present The Anthropology of Innovation Thursday, November 8 at 8pm The 21st-century world is marked by a profound paradox. On the one hand, we are more interconnected than ever before, in the sense that we now live and operate in systems that are tightly entwined. On the other hand, we also live at a time of great intellectual and social polarization — or silos — and social media is making some of this fracture worse, by encouraging the development of intellectual echo chambers. What are the key perils of silos and what do anthropologists have to say about the existence and trap of silos today? How can organizations silo-bust effectively? Join award-winning journalist (and anthropologist) Gillian Tett and her panel to find the answers to these questions and many more.

Thursday, November 29, 8pm It was 1971 when President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs.” Now, $2.5 trillion later, drug use is half of what it was 30 years ago. And yet 22 million Americans — 9 percent of the population — still use illegal drugs. Given that we have the highest incarceration rate in the world, is it time to legalize drugs or is this a war that we’re winning? For the motion: Nick Gillespie. Against the motion: Theodore Dalrymple.

Join filmmaker Austin Forbord on a fantastic tour of the Bay Area’s intriguing, influential and often outrageous theatrical innovations. From the founding of the Actor’s Workshop in 1952 through present day, experimentation and political consciousness have become hallmarks of San Francisco’s theater community. Peter Coyote, Robin Williams and dozens of other theater luminaries share their recollections of this hotbed of inspiration, and rare archival footage takes you back in time to the performances that redefined theater and art. Attend a theatrical political protest, a bacchanalian festival, a humorous satire, a surrealist manifesto, a gay fantasia or a combination of all of the above in this insightful look into the Bay Area’s theatrical legacy.

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas! Wednesday, November 21, at 9am and Thursday, November 22, at 7pm on KQED 9 and throughout Thanksgiving weekend on KQED 9 and KQED Plus. The holidays are upon us, and KQED is ringing in the season with a Cat-tastic level of cheer and the one-hour special The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas! Sure to be a holiday favorite for years to come, this adventure finds the Cat in the Hat, Nick and Sally on a journey around the world to help a lost reindeer find his way home to Freezeyourknees Snowland in time for Christmas. On the way, the Thingamajigger breaks down and they depend on a variety of animals — from African bush elephants to bottlenose dolphins to red crabs — and their remarkable abilities to help them make an amazing journey home. With gorgeous animation and pull-out-all-the-stops musical numbers, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas! will have families singing and celebrating all season long.
